Hugh Bowman bags brilliant four-timer as Chancheng lands Group Three gamble

Hugh Bowman rang in the Year of the Snake in perfect style at Sha Tin on Friday, with Chancheng Glory's Group Three win the highlight of his fantastic four-timer in front of a packed crowd.
Bowman celebrated his biggest haul in exactly a year thanks to wins aboard Sunstrider, Chancheng Glory, Brilliant Express and Green N White in consecutive races.
'I had good rides on paper and it's all worked out well,' Bowman said. 'I got into good running positions and when it didn't work out for me early, it worked out late.

Chancheng Glory was by no means disgraced at the top level on his past two starts and relished a step into calmer waters to plunder the Group Three Centenary Vase (1,800m).
After Chancheng Glory was brown-lamped from $15 into $7 in betting, Bowman made no mistake finding a prominent position from barrier nine and his mount travelled powerfully turning for home.
The five-year-old hit the front alongside the Tony Cruz-trained Winning Dragon 250m out and his stamina came to the fore, with Lui's charge outstaying his main challenger in the closing stages to prevail by three-quarters of a length.
'When he jumped well and travelled, I was always very confident,' Bowman said. 'He was aided by a nice, genuine speed set by Sword Point and his class showed over the final two furlongs.
'I get limited opportunities in these races with the weight conditions but it is what it is. I thought his run last start had a lot of merit against the highest quality of horses so it's nice to see him do that.
After the HK$4.2 million contest, Francis Lui Kin-wai confirmed his Group Three winner will target the Group One Hong Kong Gold Cup (2,000m) on February 23.
'He's one of the most honest horses in my stable,' Lui said. 'He's always been a Group Two and Group Three handicap horse, but Group Ones have been a bit too much for him.
'However, he'll go for the Gold Cup next. The 2,000m suits him better than 1,400m in the [Group One Queen's Silver Jubilee Cup] on the same day, so he'll go for that.'
Bowman opened his account for the afternoon in the Class Four Good Fortune Handicap (1,600m), spearing $7.6 chance Sunstrider to success from the near the rear of the field.
Stepping down to Class Four level for the first time, Sunstrider surged to his first local success at start 10.
Brilliant Express delivered Bowman his third success of the meeting, with the $2.1 favourite obliging after showing an impressive turn of foot to fly home from 10th in the straight.
The Australian topped off his successful Friday in the Class Two Chinese New Year Cup (1,400m), with the 44-year-old saluting aboard Ricky Yiu Poon-fai's Green N White in a thrilling finish.
After settling near the tail of the field, Green N White made smooth headway turning for home before finding traffic at the top of the straight.
Switched into the clear before the 200m marker, Green N White responded to Bowman's urgings to spear through a gap and hit the front in the closing stages.
Bowman's 507-1 four-timer took him to 37 wins for the season after 42 meetings – 43 behind runaway premiership leader Zac Purton.

Stage set for huge Happy Valley season finale as Benno Yung, Antoine Hamelin, Alfred Chan and Ben Thompson sign off
A Happy Wednesday music festival and a pyrotechnics show will provide the backdrop for Wednesday night's season finale at Happy Valley, where the fight for the Tony Cruz Award will go down to the wire and the curtain will come down on Benno Yung Tin-pang's training career. The season's Champion Griffin will also be crowned, with Sky Jewellery, Crossborderpegasus and Magnifique in the running, and there will be a jockeys' parade on the track so fans can interact with their favourite riders and maybe even score a horse plushie. Matthew Poon Ming-fai (36 winners) leads the Tony Cruz Award standings but the race to be anointed the campaign's most successful local jockey is one of the most hotly contested in years, with Matthew Chadwick (35) and Derek Leung Ka-chun (34) in hot pursuit. Yung saddles up four runners as he looks to add to his 360 successes across 12 seasons training in the Hong Kong pressure cooker, with last-start winner Endued perhaps the veteran handler's best chance on the night in the Class Four Super Oasis Handicap (1,650m). Hugh Bowman lands Happy Valley treble and brings up career-best Hong Kong tally
The 44-year-old salutes aboard Notthesillyone, Shinkansen and Jumbo Legend to move to 71 winners for the season Hugh Bowman surged past his best Hong Kong haul and onto the 71-winner mark with a Happy Valley treble on Wednesday evening, but he won't be resting on his laurels for too long in the off-season. The 44-year-old struck in the first two races on the card, but by far his best win came in the feature Class Two Begonia Handicap (1,800m) aboard the fast-finishing Jumbo Legend for Caspar Fownes. Victory for the six-year-old never looked likely in the run, with Bowman having to sit and suffer in last before unleashing a devastating turn of foot to go past them all in the final 150m. Bowman's night to remember got up and running in the first race, landing the Class Five Hawthorne Handicap (1,000m) on the Mark Newnham-trained Notthesillyone. Jumbo Legend finishes like a train! Bowman doubled up just 30 minutes later in the Class Five Magnolia Handicap (1,650m) when Shinkansen led all the way for trainer Douglas Whyte. The pair cruised to the front into the first bend and Bowman had all his rivals at it as they turned into the straight. I spent a lot of time injured and being suspended last season, so time in the saddle might be the key but I've had a good season, a good support base and I think I've had a good consistent year,' said Bowman. 'I feel like I can do better but I'm satisfied with how we've gone this season and I would like to build on it next year.' Although Bowman will enjoy a little bit of time off, he will not be on the sidelines for long as he is heading to the United Kingdom to team up with Karis Teetan at the Shergar Cup at Ascot on August 9. 'I was invited to ride in [the Shergar Cup], so plans are being made around that. That will keep me honest,' Bowman said. Meanwhile, Whyte continued his strong end to the campaign when Ace Power caused a $46 boilover in the first section of the Class Four Garden Handicap (1,200m). Second last for the entire journey, his jockey Luke Ferraris switched him wide into the straight and the writing was quickly on the wall, with the pair flying home to win by three-quarters of a length. 'He had a wide draw tonight and it probably played into his favour. The race unfolded well with the speed and he got into the race at the right time,' said Whyte. 'He can produce those sorts of efforts – when he gets held up he gives up, so he got going at the right time and had a smooth run. 'I highlighted three months ago that I'd have a good back end to the season – the horses were highly rated and some had a break. They've all come back into form now and are racing well.' Elsewhere, David Hayes kept his fleeting trainers' premiership hopes alive when Red Majesty won his 10th race over course and distance in the Class Four Green Handicap (1,650m). 'Francis [Lui Kin-wai] came from nowhere last year and won it. We're just at the stage now where we need John [Size] to not train winners and I need to keep training them. It's a long shot – possible but unlikely,' Hayes said after moving to within six victories of Size.
