Ranau folks glad for approval of new settlement

RANAU: Dozens of residents of Kg Kimarahang here breathed a sigh of relief after receiving the green light for the establishment of a new settlement in an agricultural land. The villagers' original housing area was involved in the Pan Borneo Highway project. Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister-cum-Paginatan Assemblyman, Datuk Abidin Madingkir, had officiated the new housing area. 'We are grateful that the Department of Agriculture finally allowed the residents affected by the Pan Borneo Highway to build houses in Kg Tampios. 'This land had been gazetted specifically to help the residents of Kg Kimarahang. Although the gazettement is conditional, this shows that the Government is serious about solving the people's problems. 'As your people's representative, it is my responsibility to listen and act to solve your problems, especially in the Paginatan DUN,' Abidin said when officiating at the groundbreaking ceremony at the Sungai Liwagu riverside, Kg Tampios. Meanwhile, Native Chief (KAN) Dualis Porodtong also shed light on the background of the land area identified as a new settlement site for the affected residents. He said the area, which is approximately three acres, was an Agricultural Station that operated in the 1980s but had been neglected of late. 'There was an effort by the village, through the Chairman of the JKKK Kg Tampios, to apply for this area to be made into a village reserve land. However, the application did not receive approval from the Agriculture Department and Ranau Land Department. 'Finally, with the help of our Datuk Abidin Madingkir, the land was gazetted as a temporary settlement for the residents of Kg Kimarahang who lost their village land because it was included in the Pan Borneo Highway Project. 'With the gazettement, 19 families can breathe a sigh of relief because they now have a land to build new houses,' he said. Village Head Nursakila Abdullah expressed her appreciation to Abidin for his efforts in obtaining the Agricultural Land Area as a new settlement site. A representative of the residents, Bansun Igam, also expressed his gratitude to Abidin for his efforts to realise the residents' dream of getting a new housing site. 'It has at least solved our problem of getting a new housing site. Although the area was gazetted as temporary, we are grateful to have received it, especially for those of us who do not have private land. 'However, we are requesting assistance from Datuk to donate zinc roofs so we can start building our house,' he said. Bansun called on all residents of Kg Kimarahang and Kg Tampios to give their unwavering support to the Assemblyman. Meanwhile, on the zinc roof and tank requests, Abidin said he will submit the applications to the Pan Borneo contractors and hoped they can help through their CSR programme. In the ceremony, he also officiated the Kg Tampios hall's mini kitchen. KAPs Told To Intensify Promotion Of Anti-Corruption Initiatives
KUALA LUMPUR, July 22 (Bernama) -- Heads of lead agencies (KAP) tasked with implementing the National Anti-Corruption Strategy (NACS) 2024-2028 have been urged to intensify the promotion and publicity of their respective achievements in combating corruption. Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) National Governance Planning Division senior director Datuk Idris Zaharudin said the move was important to demonstrate the government's commitment to continuously improving governance, combating corruption, and fostering a positive perception among the public at both national and international levels. He said that during the NACS Performance Coordination Meetings held on Nov 11, 2024, and June 10 this year, MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki had underscored the need for greater promotion and publicity. According to him, NACS, like the National Anti-Corruption Plan (NACP), was recognised as one of the contributing factors in enhancing Malaysia's ranking in the Corruption Perception Index (CPI), in line with the aspirations of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar. 'The establishment of the CPI Special Task Force, chaired by Shamsul Azri, is a positive step towards monitoring and improving the country's score, while also reflecting continuous efforts by all parties, not just the MACC, to combat corruption effectively and restore public confidence in government institutions,' he said while chairing the Joint Engagement Session with 19 KAPs here today. Meanwhile, Idris said the MACC chief commissioner had congratulated nine KAPs, including the commission itself, for successfully completing the implementation of 10 sub-strategies under their respective scopes of responsibility. 'Five sub-strategies were successfully completed in 2024, while the remaining five were completed by 30 June,' he said. On July 9, Idris chaired the CPI Special Task Force Pre-Council Meeting in preparation for the main meeting, which was chaired by the Chief Secretary to the Government on July 15. The meeting on 15 July was also attended by Azam and members of the CPI Special Task Force, comprising secretaries-general of ministries, heads of departments and government agencies, as well as representatives from Transparency International Malaysia (TI-M) and appointed experts.

Nga demands apology from MyKiosk 'White Elephants' critics
KUALA LUMPUR - Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming has called on those who labelled the MyKiosk initiative is a 'white elephant' project to apologise. He said the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) investigation, which found no elements of corruption or abuse of power in the programme's implementation, clearly demonstrated that the Housing and Local Government Ministry's (KPKT) efforts to carry out government policies should not be subjected to unfounded accusations. "KPKT took the initiative to invite MACC to conduct an investigation. It was not MACC that approached us. We went to MACC and submitted all the documents for review. MACC has since issued a statement confirming that there was no abuse of power, no criminal element, and no corruption involved,' he said. "I demand, on behalf of KPKT staff who work tirelessly to serve the people, that those who have made baseless claims and slander come forward and apologise. The sacrifices of these civil servants must be acknowledged and not tarnished by unfounded allegations,' he said during a question-and-answer session in the Dewan Rakyat today. He was responding to a question from Onn Abu Bakar (PH-Batu Pahat), who had asked for the latest statistics on the implementation of the MyKiosk 2.0 programme and the status of the Batu Pahat Municipal Council Stadium upgrade project, including its scope of work, costs involved, and expected completion date Nga said the implementation of MyKiosk has shown encouraging results, with MyKiosk 1.0 achieving a 91.75 per cent occupancy rate, while MyKiosk 2.0 has reached 86.78 per cent. This success has positively transformed the lives of 7,243 hawkers and petty traders across the country. He also highlighted success stories of MyKiosk traders, such as a hawker selling 'ayam gunting' at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC) Square who now earns up to RM30,000 a month, as well as food and soymilk traders who have doubled their income to RM18,000 a month after joining the programme. "This is a testament to the success of reforms aimed at helping hawkers. It proves that MyKiosk not only provides physical facilities but also serves as a catalyst for economic growth by creating sustainable business opportunities,' he said. However, Nga acknowledged that there were some shortcomings in the programme's earlier implementation. To address this, his ministry has introduced a 'traffic light' evaluation system to monitor the performance of local authorities (PBTs). Through this system, any PBT receiving a green rating will be categorised as having excellent performance and will receive increased allocations, while those with a yellow rating will have their allocations reviewed. "If the light is red, the allocation will be cancelled, and the head of the PBT will be summoned by the Local Government Department to receive a reprimand and provide an explanation for failing to implement government policies. "We will continue to monitor to ensure that the well-being of the people, the welfare of hawkers, consumer comfort, and environmental sustainability are all prioritised under the MADANI Economy framework," he said. Meanwhile, regarding the Batu Pahat Municipal Council Stadium upgrade project, Nga said the project is expected to commence early next year and be completed by the end of the same year. He said the RM3.5 million project is currently in the process of appointing a consultant. "The scope of work includes upgrading the field drainage system, resurfacing the field, and constructing a new running track,' he said. - BERNAMA
