Power pairing of Stewart Cink and Padraig Harrington tied heading into weekend at US Senior Open
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — Stewart Cink made up five shots over nine holes against Padraig Harrington in their head-to-head pairing at the U.S. Senior Open on Friday, leaving the major champions tied for the lead after their second rounds at the Broadmoor.
Both players head into the weekend at 6-under 134, though they got there much differently. Opening on the more difficult back nine, Harrington shot 31 to open his five-shot lead. Then, Cink shot his own 31 on the second nine to pull back into a tie.
Cink hit all 18 greens in regulation, making it 35 of 36 for the week. He called that stat overrated, especially at the Broadmoor, where the real test starts on the notoriously difficult-to-read greens that all cant away from a monument lurking above the course on Cheyenne Mountain.
'You don't want to be chipping downhill on this course, it's not a secret,' said the 52-year-old Cink, the 2009 British Open champion who is playing in his first U.S. Senior Open.
After Harrington shot 31 on the more difficult nine, then kept the lead at five with a birdie on the par-5 third, he was thinking there might be an opportunity to open a big lead heading into the weekend.
A pair of three-putts — one on the seventh and the other on the par-3 fourth green that has been slowed down to temper the severe slope — resulted in bogeys.
Cink hit his approach on the par-5 ninth to 45 feet and two-putted for birdie to get to 6 under. His first putt showed Harrington the line after the Irishman, the winner of the 2007 and '08 British and 2008 PGA Championship, had short-sided himself in a greenside bunker, and he made his 20-footer for birdie and the tie.
'I got a lovely read off Stewart. I don't think I would have given it as much break, so that was nice,' said Harrington, who won the U.S. Senior Open in 2022. 'They're the breaks you get when things are going well.'
Both players finished the round with dark clouds hovering, and the horn sounded right after they holed out, leading to a delay of about 60 minutes.
They finished the day two ahead of first-round co-leader Mark Hensby, whose afternoon round got delayed.

Harrington and Cink, the only two players on the PGA Tour Champions who average 300 yards in driving distance, were well positioned to be playing together again to start the weekend.
'I love watching him play. I would hope that he probably feels similarly about me,' Cink said. 'We have mutual respect for each other. He's a world-class player and he's been doing it a long time. I would love it if we could go the distance here.'

Thunder general manager Sam Presti lauds ‘homegrown' NBA championship team
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Sam Presti put Oklahoma City's first NBA championship team together in an unconventional way. The Thunder general manager didn't make any splashy trades or break the bank in free agency. He didn't replace the coach with a bigger name during the rebuild to get the team over the top. He relied on good-old-fashioned internal development, with a few strategic additions sprinkled in. It worked. Somehow, Oklahoma City claimed the title with the same coach and many of the same players who won 24 games four years ago. 'We have people from Canada, Serbia, the West Coast, the East Coast, middle America, France, Australia, that all come together for a collective goal,' Presti said. 'There's compassion on the team. There's a cowboy toughness, a self-reliance that comes from being homegrown, and an essential sense of goodness.' Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was the regular-season and Finals MVP, but there were plenty of challenges. Jalen Williams, a first-time All-Star, was a force in the playoffs despite playing the entire postseason with a ligament tear in his right wrist that will require surgery. Chet Holmgren missed 50 games this season with a pelvic injury. The Thunder were among the league's leaders in games lost to injury. Presti said the key was that the players saw challenges as opportunities. Many took advantage of their additional playing time and were better prepared to contribute during the title run. 'If you want to be the exception, you have to be willing to be exceptional,' Presti said. 'That point was basically aimed at the fact that we have to be the exception to the rule. … The quest to be exceptional is met with having to do a lot of things that are unorthodox, and I felt like the team did that in a lot of ways and we were rewarded for it.' Coach Mark Daigneault, like the team, is an unconventional success story. He coached the team's G-League affiliate before taking over the Thunder. After winning fewer than 25 games his first two years as Thunder head coach, he's now a champion. Presti said Daigneault has improved over the years, and his approach to learning helped the young team stay focused. He said the team never got overwhelmed by circumstances, like losing Game 1 in both the Western Conference semifinals against Denver and the NBA Finals against Indiana, or falling apart in Game 6 at Indiana. 'I think the team saw those as, 'Hey, this is just the next thing in front of us that we have to accomplish to achieve the goals of being a great team,' and I don't think anyone was inconvenienced or saw that as a catastrophic event,' Presti said. 'It's like, 'Well, I guess this is part of the thing we have to get better at,' and they met the moment.' Two additions were guard Alex Caruso, who was acquired in a trade with Chicago last summer, and center Isaiah Hartenstein, who was added through free agency. Those veterans played key roles in the playoffs and helped Presti get named Executive of the Year. If you hear us approaching things differently than we have in the past, I'd be a little bit surprised by that. But we're going to have to fight some human nature there, but I think we have the people and the characters and the program to fight for that. Former Canada coach Stephen Hart named interim coach of the NSL's Halifax Tides FC
HALIFAX – Stephen Hart, former coach of the Canadian national team and Halifax Wanderers of the Canadian Premier League, has been named interim coach of the Northern Super League's Halifax Tides FC. The 65-year-old Hart succeeds Lewis Page, who has shifted roles to help establish the Tides development academy. At 1-6-1, Halifax sits in the basement of the six-team NSL after losing three straight games. 'It's an honour to step into this role,' Hart said in a statement. 'Our team is focused, resilient and committed to growing together both on and off the field. I'm excited to lead this next chapter and help guide the players through the remainder of the season with passion, purpose and pride.' Hart coached the Canadian men in various stints from 2006 to 2012, posting a 20-15-10 record. He resigned in October 2021 after an 8-1 loss to Honduras ended Canada's World Cup qualifying run. After coaching his native Trinidad and Tobago, Hart took charge of the Halifax entry in the CPL for its debut season in 2019. He was fired in October 2022 after an 8-15-5 campaign. More recently, he has served as a consultant to the NWSL's Portland Thorns. 'This is about building for the long-term success of the club,' said Tides president Valerie Malone. 'Strengthening our leadership structure and investing in player development, starting with the academy — are important steps in that direction. Phillies slugger Bryce Harper is reinstated after injured list stint with sore wrist
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Phillies slugger Bryce Harper was reinstated Monday ahead of Philadelphia's opener against San Diego after a stint on the injured list with right wrist inflammation. Harper went on the 10-day injured list on June 6. The two-time National League MVP and eight-time All-Star is hitting .258 with nine home runs, 34 RBIs and eight stolen bases in 57 games. He also missed five games, from May 26 to June 2, with a bruised right elbow after being hit by a pitch from Atlanta's Spencer Strider. Harper said when he went on the IL that he felt pain in the wrist during a large portion of last season, when he hit 30 homers while helping the Phillies win the NL East. The Phillies entered Monday's game in first place in the division. They are 13-14 overall this season without Harper in the lineup.
