Court sets August 20 to hear Peter Anthony's bid for review

(Bernama pic) PUTRAJAYA: The Court of Appeal today fixed Aug 20 to hear an application by former Sabah infrastructure development minister Peter Anthony to review a previous Court of Appeal decision upholding his conviction and sentence. Peter was sentenced to three years in prison and fined RM50,000 for falsifying documents related to a maintenance and service contract at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS). A three-member panel led by Justice Azman Abdullah set the date after determining that the court should examine the earlier panel's full written grounds of judgment affirming the conviction. 'Having considered the submissions and affidavits filed, we note that the arguments touch upon the broad grounds previously provided. Therefore, we find it necessary to review the full written judgment,' said Azman, who sat with Justices Lim Chong Fong and Lim Hock Leng. Peter's counsel, Haniff Khatri Abdulla, had requested a new date, saying his client served as the assemblyman for Melalap. He submitted that Peter might be affected by the impending dissolution of the Sabah state legislative assembly, which is expected to occur in September. Deputy public prosecutor Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin did not object to the request for a new date. On March 14, Peter filed a notice of motion seeking to review and set aside the conviction and sentence handed down by the Court of Appeal on March 4. He also applied to quash the warrant of committal issued to Kajang prison and sought any consequential orders necessary to ensure that justice is served in the matter. On March 4, the Court of Appeal ordered Peter to serve a three-year prison sentence after dismissing his final appeal against the conviction and sentence imposed by the Kuala Lumpur sessions court in May 2022. On April 18, 2023, the Kuala Lumpur High Court upheld the conviction and sentence imposed by the sessions court. Peter subsequently filed an appeal on April 19, 2023, seeking to set aside the decision. He has since paid the RM50,000 fine imposed by the court. Peter was charged under Section 468 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of seven years' imprisonment and a fine upon conviction. He was accused, in his capacity as managing director of Asli Jati Sdn Bhd, of falsifying a letter from UMS's office of the deputy vice-chancellor dated June 9, 2014, by inserting false statements with the intent to deceive. Theft by addicts main factor in index crime spike
ALOR STAR: Theft by drug addicts has become the leading cause of rising index crime rates in Kedah, said police chief Commissioner Adzli Abu Shah. From Jan 1 to yesterday, Kedah recorded 2,852 index crime cases, with 47 per cent involving theft linked to drug addicts, he said. "Kedah police will maintain the focus outlined by former police chief Datuk Fisol Salleh, which is to eradicate drug-related crime. "We believe that if drug issues can be tackled and eliminated as much as possible, the overall index crime rate in Kedah can be brought down," he said. Adzli was responding to Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail's recent comments in conjunction with the 2025 National Anti-Drug Day celebration held in Jitra last Friday, urging the Kedah government to step up efforts to remove the state from the top four nationwide for drug addiction rates. On a separate note, he said Kedah police are stepping up border security measures despite the ongoing Thailand-Cambodia conflict occurring far from the state's northern border. "Precautionary steps are being taken by strengthening security at Malaysia's border checkpoints," he said, adding that despite growing support from agencies such as the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency, constant vigilance remains essential. "We must not let our guard down. We are committed to ensuring the country's borders remain secure," he said. Earlier, Adzli attended the rank insignia presentation ceremony for the Kedah police chief and deputy police chief, along with the handover ceremony for the deputy chief post, witnessed by Special Branch director CP Datuk Ibrahim Darus at the police contingent headquarters. Adzli, who was the acting police chief, was officially appointed to the role and promoted to the rank of Commissioner of Police (CP). Meanwhile, Perlis deputy police chief SAC Baderulhisham Baharudin was appointed as the new Kedah deputy police chief and promoted to deputy commissioner of police (DCP). – Bernama

Two men arrested over whipping effigy of PM Anwar at rally
KUALA LUMPUR: Two men have been arrested to assist in the investigation of an incident where an effigy resembling Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was whipped during a rally at Dataran Merdeka on Saturday. Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail confirmed the arrests, stating that the suspects, aged 21 and 47, were detained separately. Authorities also seized communication equipment believed to have been used to upload and share content related to the incident. 'The act was recorded and uploaded on social media by certain parties, and the remand application for both individuals will be made soon,' Mohd Khalid said in a statement. The case is being investigated under Section 504 of the Penal Code, Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, and Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955. The Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department's Classified Crimes Investigation Unit is handling the probe. Mob killing in Jasin after lewd act, seven arrested in Melaka
ALOR GAJAH: A 51-year-old jobless man died after being beaten by a mob following an alleged lewd act in the parking lot of a Jasin supermarket. Melaka police chief Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar confirmed the incident, stating the victim succumbed to severe injuries at the scene. The victim, who had prior records under Section 377D of the Penal Code for public indecency in 2003 and 2024, was said to have committed the act at 7.26 pm before being chased and assaulted. 'The victim attempted to escape, even jumping into a river, but was caught and beaten again,' Dzulkhairi said during an event at Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM). Seven men, including a Pakistani national, were arrested and remanded for seven days under Section 302 for murder. In a separate case, a motorcyclist in his 30s was remanded for three days after assaulting a man in his 20s during a brawl near Stadthuys. The clash erupted after MBMB enforcement officers fined a group of bikers for violating the Vehicle Free Zone. 'The suspect tore up the summons, leading to a fight where the victim was struck with a helmet and wheel lock,' Dzulkhairi added. Twenty-three individuals were arrested, with 22 released on bail. The case is being investigated under Sections 148 (rioting) and 186 (obstructing public servants). - Bernama
