Melaka police chief Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar confirmed the incident, stating the victim succumbed to severe injuries at the scene.
The victim, who had prior records under Section 377D of the Penal Code for public indecency in 2003 and 2024, was said to have committed the act at 7.26 pm before being chased and assaulted.
'The victim attempted to escape, even jumping into a river, but was caught and beaten again,' Dzulkhairi said during an event at Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM).
Seven men, including a Pakistani national, were arrested and remanded for seven days under Section 302 for murder.
In a separate case, a motorcyclist in his 30s was remanded for three days after assaulting a man in his 20s during a brawl near Stadthuys. The clash erupted after MBMB enforcement officers fined a group of bikers for violating the Vehicle Free Zone. 'The suspect tore up the summons, leading to a fight where the victim was struck with a helmet and wheel lock,' Dzulkhairi added.
Twenty-three individuals were arrested, with 22 released on bail. The case is being investigated under Sections 148 (rioting) and 186 (obstructing public servants). - Bernama

He said the group's modus operandi was to approach foreign tourists for a conversation before asking them to reveal the cash in their possession. "The suspects will then take the money and leave the scene. It is reported that victims only realise their money is gone after the suspects leave," he said. He said all the suspects have been remanded for four days until Aug 6 and the case is being investigated under sections 379 and 380 of the Penal Code and sections 6 and 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. GEORGE TOWN: Police have crippled a foreign crime syndicate believed to be targeting tourists in popular hotspots around the city with the arrest of five Middle Eastern nationals, including two women, during an operation. Dubbed 'Op Tourist', the operation was launched following three separate police reports lodged between July 30 and Aug 1 involving cash thefts from international tourists in Pulau Tikus and Jalan Penang. Acting state police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said the victims — tourists from Taiwan, the Netherlands and Syria, aged between 29 and 52 — had reported being approached by people posing as fellow tourists or friendly locals who engaged them in casual conversation. "During the exchange, the suspects allegedly coaxed the victims into revealing the cash in their possession before discreetly making off with the money. "A joint team conducted the operation at Gurney Plaza. "As a result of the operation yesterday, police arrested three men and two women, aged between 19 and 35, all of whom are Middle Eastern nationals," he said in a statement today.
