Boston Celtics Jrue Holiday trade made official with one key tweak

USA Todaya day ago
Jrue Holiday's trade to the Portland Trail Blazers has now been made official. The Boston Celtics previously struck the deal to help with their current salary cap issues, while Anfernee Simons joins Joe Mazzulla's roster as part of the deal. However, there has been a slight alteration to the overall trade package. Originally, it was reported that Portland was including multiple second-round picks alongside Simons to sweeten the deal.
According to Trail Blazers reporter Sean Highkin, those picks have not been included in the official trade. Instead, Boston swaps Holiday for the offensively gifted Simons in a straight player-for-player swap. Neither team is parting with any draft capital, and instead, the Celtics get a high-ceiling young talent on a tradable contract along with some much-needed salary cap relief.
"The Anfernee Simons-Jrue Holiday trade is now official, without the previously reported second-round picks going from Portland to Boston. The final deal is a straight 1-for-1 player swap," Highkin reported via BlueSky.
Holiday was a key pickup for the Celtics in 2023. He immediately made an impact as he helped Boston secure a championship during his first season with the franchise. Now, as the Celtics begin a re-tooling period, Holiday will embrace being an elder statesman on a Trail Blazers team looking to build an identity as a stern defensive roster.
Brad Stevens has also parted with Kristaps Porzingis and Luke Kornet this summer, while Al Horford's future also remains in question. Those deals have also become official over the past 24 hours.

NBA insider questions if Celtics can return to title contention when Jayson Tatum is healthy

The Boston Celtics have made several moves this summer to address salary cap issues as they will be without superstar Jayson Tatum for the 2025-26 season due to an Achilles injury. But will the Celtics be able to return to prominence when Tatum recovers? That's the question a top NBA insider is posing. Boston traded away Jrue Holiday to the Portland Trail Blazers and Kristaps Porzingis to the Atlanta Hawks — two key pieces to their 2023-24 championship team — to get below the second tax apron of $207.8 million. If they stayed above that threshold, the Celtics would've been dealt strict penalties, including being unable to make sign-and-trades, trading away future first-round picks, and using a mid-level exception. Advertisement Holiday is owed $104.4 million over the last three seasons of his contract while Porzingis is owed $30.7 million in the final year of his deal. The Celtics can also look to trade away Jaylen Brown (owed $236.1 million the next four seasons) and Derrick White (owed $125.8 million the next four seasons) to continue to reset their salary cap and recoup assets. 'Boston knew this day was coming; the Celtics were discussing it openly even as they were smashing Dallas in the 2024 NBA Finals,' The Athletic's John Hollinger reports. 'The repeater penalty in the 2023 CBA basically demands that Boston finish 2025-26 below the luxury-tax line, and they still have to whittle down $20 million in salary to get there. 'That said, the Celtics have taken the scalpel about as painlessly as possible so far. Dumping Holiday and receiving two seconds was a minor miracle, and Boston can likely take back significant draft capital if deals emerge for mainstays like Derrick White, Sam Hauser and Jaylen Brown.' Advertisement However, Hollinger questions if the Celtics can return to being a championship-caliber team when Tatum returns from injury. 'The real challenge, perhaps, comes next summer. Having torn so much down, how can the Celtics quickly build it back up so they can thrive again with a healthy Tatum?' The Celtics will want to be title contenders again when Tatum returns for the 2026-27 season. If they do end up moving Brown and White for salary cap purposes, it might be tougher to get back to that mountaintop without them. Related Headlines

Yankees' Marcus Stroman gives Juan Soto his flowers

The post Yankees' Marcus Stroman gives Juan Soto his flowers appeared first on ClutchPoints. The New York Yankees lost a tough one to the New York Mets on Friday, failing to earn the win on July 4th in a 6-5 loss. Marcus Stroman was on the mound, finishing the game with four strikeouts through 5.0 innings pitched and allowing seven hits, a walk, and three earned runs. Advertisement After the loss, the Yankees pitcher went out of his way to praise Mets' slugger Juan Soto, who had a monster game during the Holiday. During the postgame interview, Marcus Stroman explained what he saw from Soto in Friday's contest. 'He's one of the best for a reason; he's extremely locked in right now. He's just an incredibly hard AB.' Soto finished the game with three hits, one home run, and two RBIs while running in two scores himself. He was one of the main reasons why the Mets got the better of the Yankees, as the 26-year-old outfielder looked to be in prime form on the 4th of July. Marcus Stroman returns to action after missing two months due to a knee injury. When on the mound, it's been a bit rough for the 34-year-old pitcher this season. Entering Friday's game, Stroman owned an 8.16 ERA and 1.674 WHIP while recording eight strikeouts through 14.1 innings pitched. His performance against the Mets likely won't help his stats much. Advertisement Luckily, there is still plenty of time for Stroman to turn things around. New York is in second place in the AL East, with only the Toronto Blue Jays ahead of them. It's an incredibly close race in the division, as the Tampa Bay Rays are tied with the Yankees. Ideally, the club finds a way to get back in the win column, as Friday's game was the fifth straight loss. Marcus Stroman will likely take the mound again against the Seattle Mariners. That will be a tough game as well, as Cal Raleigh is leading the league in home runs. Should the Boston Celtics go after Damian Lillard AND Bradley Beal?

Should the Boston Celtics go after Damian Lillard AND Bradley Beal? The Celtics just trimmed down their roster's cap hit to avoid the dreaded second apron impacts mandated by the collective bargaining agreement (CBA) by trading away vets Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis, and let key backup big man Luke Kornet walk in free agency. Since then, they have also added former Minnesota Timberwolves rotation players Luka Garza and Josh Minott to help bolster the team's depth on the cheap, but what if they could add not just one of Beal or Lillard to such an end -- but both? Would this outcome made possible by one finished and another anticipated buyouts make sense for all of the parties involved? The hosts of the CLNS Media "The Big Three NBA" podcast, A. Sherrod Blakely, Gary Washburn, and Kwani Lunis took some time on a recent episode of their show to talk it over. Check it out below!
