Eugenio Suárez continues homer binge for D-backs, goes deep for 5th time in 3 games

Yahoo4 days ago
PHOENIX (AP) — Eugenio Suárez continued his power surge for the Arizona Diamondbacks by hitting his fifth home run in the past three games, a solo shot against the Houston Astros on Monday night.
The 34-year-old Suárez — who is one of the baseball's most coveted bats as the Aug. 1 trade deadline approaches — leads the National League with 36 homers. He was named the NL Player of the Week for the fourth time this season earlier Monday.
Suárez hit two homers against the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday and again on Sunday.
The All-Star third baseman is also the third D-backs player to hit seven homers over a six-game span, joining Reggie Sanders (2001) and J.D. Martinez (2017). He's the first to accomplish the feat in the big leagues since Aaron Judge in 2024.
Suárez — who is a free agent this offseason — has long been considered one of the top sluggers on the market for prospective buyers at the deadline.
But it's unclear if the D-backs will be willing to trade Suárez since they came into Monday's game on the fringes of playoff contention with a 50-50 record.

Denny Hamlin adds contract extension with Joe Gibbs Racing to celebratory week after win at Dover

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin has signed a multiyear contract extension with Joe Gibbs Racing, the team said Friday. Details of the contract were not announced. The deal comes during the same week in which the driver of the No. 11 car won in Dover for his 58th career Cup victory. He ranks 11th all-time in career victories, a resume that includes three Daytona 500 wins, three Southern 500 wins and one Coca-Cola 600. Hamlin will try to win his fourth crown jewel race in Sunday's Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. 'Joe and everyone at JGR are family to me and have done so much for me over the last 20 years,' Hamlin said. 'We've had a solid start to this season and we have been able to welcome some great new partners this year, so there are a lot of exciting things happening with our team not only now, but also into the future.' Hamlin ranks fourth in this season's points. He's made all 706 of his Cup starts with JGR and is the longest tenured driver in team history. He also has 244 top-five finishes, 369 top-10s and has won the pole 44 times. 'I really appreciate Denny and everything he has meant to our organization,' Gibbs said. 'It is just really special when you think about everything we've experienced over the past 20 years, from that first moment when J.D. (Gibbs) recognized his talent at a test session, until now. It is remarkable in any sport to compete at the level Denny has for this long and we are thrilled he has been able to spend his entire career with us.' Hamlin and NBA Hall of Famer Michael Jordan also are co-owners of NASCAR's 23XI Racing team, which is embroiled in a court battle to retain their charter in the series. Last week, U.S. District Judge Kenneth Bell denied a request from Front Row Motorsports and 23XI Racing for a temporary restraining order to prevent Cup officials from revoking their charters. That means the six cars owned by those teams will race as open entries this weekend and perhaps longer. Hamlin's team fields three drivers — Bubba Wallace, Riley Herbst and Tyler Reddick. ___ AP auto racing: Michael Marot, The Associated Press

Packers CB Nate Hobbs' versatility is already showing at training camp

The Green Bay Packers knew they were getting a versatile player when they signed former Las Vegas Raiders cornerback Nate Hobbs to a four-year, $48 million deal this offseason. According to Albert Breer of the Packers' personnel department had been eyeing Hobbs for a couple of years, believing he could be an outside corner. So far in camp, that's exactly where he's been spending most of his time. "Yeah, he's done a great job. You can really see the guy's a competitor, and that's why we loved him on tape," head coach Matt LaFleur said Thursday. "He's tough, and he was primarily a nickel with the Raiders, so it's been pretty cool to watch him come in and play a lot more outside corner, but also, we know what he can do if we want to put him inside." Just two days into training camp, Hobbs has already made a pair of standout plays. On Day 1, Jordan Love dropped a dime to running back Josh Jacobs in the end zone, but Hobbs made a nice play on the ball to break it up. Then, on Thursday, Love was able to draw Hobbs offside to turn a 3rd-and-7 into a 3rd-and-2. Trying to make up for the mistake and get the defense off the field, Hobbs got a good jump on a pass intended for Dontayvion Wicks. Hobbs made a diving interception but had to settle for the pass breakup. "I should've caught it," Hobbs said, shaking his head. "That's all—get my hands on the ball, keep it on the ball." Even though it wasn't a turnover, those are the types of plays the Packers hope Hobbs will make during the regular season to help fill the void of losing Jaire Alexander. In 51 games across four seasons with the Raiders, Hobbs picked off three passes and broke up another 19. He also missed 16 games due to various injuries, preventing him from being the best version of himself. "Just being real, I haven't gotten the most out of myself that I want. I haven't fulfilled my expectations for myself, and that's a me thing," Hobbs said. "Injuries play a part, but that's all mental. You are who you think you are. You're always right about yourself, whether you think that you are or you're not." A key component to unlocking Hobbs' potential could be moving him around the secondary based on matchups. The Packers know what Hobbs is capable of in the slot and are in the process of learning more about what he can do on the outside. "I feel like (my versatility) will free up (Jeff Hafley) on the play calling, and I feel like it'll bring confidence to guys wherever I'm at, whether I'm at nickel or corner," he said. "I'm going to bring energy, I'm going to run to the ball and make plays." This article originally appeared on Packers Wire: Packers CB Nate Hobbs' versatility is already showing at training camp

Soccer players' union hits back at 'autocratic' FIFA and Infantino in fallout from Club World Cup

The global soccer players' union hit back at FIFA and its president Gianni Infantino on Friday, saying their autocratic style of leadership was harming the rights of its members. 'Football needs responsible leadership, not emperors,' the FIFPRO network said after a meeting of 58 national player unions responded to FIFA pursuing its agenda with unofficial player representatives. 'It needs fewer autocratic monologues and more genuine, inclusive and transparent dialogue,' the union added. FIFA announced two weeks ago it reached a consensus on key issues after Infantino hosted a group of mostly non-recognized officials in New York ahead of the Club World Cup final. The latest rift between soccer's governing body and its players' unions flared while the European Commission in Brussels is considering a formal complaint against FIFA. It was filed by FIFPRO's European division and national leagues in Europe against FIFA's style of governance and decision-making. FIFPRO said FIFA's core agenda included an overloaded global match calendar with too many games for elite players, lack of physical and mental recovery periods and extreme playing conditions. Players at the month-long Club World Cup in the United States reported feeling dizzy and unwell in the heat of daytime games played to appeal to worldwide TV audiences. The 63-game tournament backed by Saudi Arabian money was lucrative for clubs, especially in Europe, though FIFA added it to the schedule without formally consulting players. The tournament, FIFPRO said, was 'celebrated by President Infantino despite being held under conditions that were extreme and inappropriate for any human being, demonstrating a troubling insensitivity to human rights, even when it concerns elite athletes. 'FIFPRO reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to protecting the rights of men and women players — rights which are being seriously undermined by commercial policies imposed by its autocratic system of governance,' the Netherlands-based union said of FIFA. 'This is a model that puts the health of players at risk and sidelines those at the heart of the game,' FIFPRO said, adding it was 'unacceptable for an organization that claims global leadership to turn a blind eye to the basic needs of the players.' FIFA was approached for comment. FIFPRO has not had a formal working agreement with FIFA since the previous one expired in 2023. ___ AP soccer:
