Dangerous heat wave impacting Maryland through Wednesday
WJZ Alert Days in place across Maryland for extreme heat
The combination of near triple digit heat and elevated humidity levels have prompted the WJZ First Alert Weather team to issue Alert Days now through Wednesday of this week. High temperatures will peak in the lower 100s Monday and Tuesday. New record highs are possible Monday and Tuesday BWI. Wednesday will also feature dangerous heat, but high temperatures should fall just shy of 100°. Isolated strong thunderstorms are possible Wednesday afternoon, but a much better chance of storms returns Thursday. Feels like temperatures Monday through Wednesday will be the worst between 105° and 110°.
Heat is the number one weather-related cause of death in the United States. Please take the Alert Days seriously, especially if you will be outdoors in the next couple of days.
With hotter temperatures on the way, additional heat alerts will be active across much of Maryland:
A heat advisory is in effect for for much of the Eastern Shore now through 8 pm Tuesday evening.
An extreme heat warning for central Maryland is in effect through 9 pm tonight. Feels like temperatures could approach 110° for these areas.
Regardless of whether or not your neighborhood is in an alert, the entire area will be extremely hot and humid.
A few ways to stay safe and healthy while working outside during extreme heat -
Wear loose fitting, light colored clothing
Avoid being in the direct rays of the sun
Take frequent breaks if you plan to be outdoors
Drink lots of water, even if you don't feel thirsty. Two liters of water a day is recommended
Remember pets and the elderly in the heat
Make sure ceiling fans are circulating counterclockwise to circulate cooler air downward
In preparation for the unusually hot weather, Baltimore City's Health Department is declaring its first 'Code Red Extreme' Heat Alert. The alert begins Sunday and runs through the middle of the week. A list of available cooling centers is listed on the city's website.
Late week storms will help cool us off
A cold front will sag south late this week into next weekend bringing us some relief from the dangerous heat. Thursday's high temperatures will still reach the lower to middle 90s with tropical levels of humidity. This will allow the feels like temperature to reach 100°. Scattered heavy to strong thunderstorms will be possible Thursday afternoon and evening bringing some relief from the heat.
This same cold front will drape across our area Friday and Saturday. Additional clouds, showers and thunderstorms should allow temperatures to stay in the upper 80s to around 90° Friday and Saturday. Humidity levels will be high, but the temperatures will not be as extreme.

Rocketing start to Independence Day on Space Coast with two launches
The Space Coast enjoyed a rocketing start to Independence Day celebrations with two rocket launches less than 12 hours apart. First up, SpaceX launched a weather satellite for the European Space Agency on July 1, getting the Falcon 9 off the ground right on schedule at 5:04 p.m. July 1 from Kennedy Space Center Pad 39A. The launch came just as storms rolled into Brevard. Headed for geostationary orbit, this is an Earth observation satellite with the aim to observe extreme weather events and air quality over Europe and North Africa. During the early hours of Wednesday, July 2, SpaceX launched a second rocket in a July doubleheader. The Starlink 10-25 mission took off at 2:28 a.m. from Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station after an hour delay. Next Launch: Is there a launch today? Upcoming SpaceX, Axiom, ULA rocket launch schedule at Cape Canaveral This mission was special because it marked a new record for SpaceX booster reusability -- the key to how SpaceX keeps costs down. The Falcon 9 booster launching this mission saw its 29th launch and landing. How high SpaceX can go on that number of reuses remains to be seen but the company run by Elon Musk continues to push its fleet of rockets. While SpaceX has yet to confirm, the Space Coast Office of Tourism indicates the next launch will be no earlier than 1:48 a.m. Tuesday, July 8. The launch is slated to be the next batch of SpaceX Starlink internet satellites, referred to as Starlink 10-28. Several Westchester beaches closed after heavy rainfall causes bacterial contamination
The Westchester County Health Department has preemptively closed several beaches Wednesday, July 2, after heavy rainfall Tuesday evening may have caused bacteria contamination in the water. The health department said 0.72 inches of rainfall in the last 24 hours may have caused bacterial contamination in the swimming water due to road runoff into drainage outfalls near the following locations: Hudson Park Beach Davenport Beach Club Greentree Country Club Surf Club on the Sound Harbor Island Park Beach Point Club Orienta Beach Club Mamaroneck Beach and Yacht Club Coveleigh Club The health department says these beaches can reopen Thursday, July 3, if bacteria levels meet health code standards. Scattered storms across South Florida, more widespread rain expected this week
It was a stormy start to Wednesday with parts of South Florida receiving showers with heavy downpours and thunder. Scattered showers and storms will be around throughout the day. The chance of rain is highest from late afternoon into the evening. Afternoon highs will climb to the upper 80s with "feels like" temperatures in the mid to upper 90s when you factor in the humidity. Chance of rain increases over holiday weekend. NEXT Weather The chance of rain stays high on Thursday due to a southwesterly wind flow which will continue to steer showers and storms towards South Florida. More widespread rain is likely with the potential for heavy downpours. During the late week and the Fourth of July weekend, the weather will depend on a disturbance near northern Florida which the National Hurricane Center said has a medium potential (40% chance) of developing into a tropical or subtropical depression. A cold front will move into northern Florida and stall out. An area of low pressure is expected to develop along the front and bring plenty of moisture and instability. National Hurricane Center said system has a medium chance for development. NEXT Weather Regardless of development, this system will likely enhance the potential for showers and storms across South Florida on Friday and throughout the holiday weekend. How much rain South Florida will receive depends on how this system evolves and where it sets up. Right now the heaviest rain is expected for parts of northern and central Florida.
