Pandikar now backs Hajiji's move for GRS to work with Pakatan

The Star2 days ago
KOTA KINABALU: Outspoken United Sabah National Organisation (Usno) president Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia has backed Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor's decision to go into an electoral pact with Pakatan Harapan.
"I support Hajiji's stand in working together with any parties, so long as the deal benefits GRS in that the seats allocation ratio favours GRS," he said Sunday (Aug 3).
Pandikar said that Hajiji discussed with him personally and assured that GRS would be putting candidates in more than 50 out of the 73 state seats.
"This to me is a stand that is within the scope of the definition of the GRS's war cry 'Rumah Kita, Kita Jaga,' (Our Home, We Protect)," he said when contacted.
Pandikar, along with Sabah STAR president Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan and Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) president Datuk Seri Yong Teck Lee, have been pushing for the eight-party GRS to contest independently in the upcoming state election.
"I admit that I have amplified the voice of Datuk Dr Jeffrey, that whoever works with Malaya parties are traitor," Pandikar said.
He said Usno's views expressed during political roadshows were to gauge Sabahans' opinions, and if they would support a local party if it were to go solo.
"Whilst a reasonable number of Sabahans aspire for GRS to go solo, there are also many who expressed the opinion that total political confrontation with Putrajaya is not a wise move," he said.
As such, Usno will remain in GRS to contest in the upcoming election and will support the decision of the GRS chairman to collaborate with any political parties in the election.
On July 27, Hajiji announced that GRS will work with Pakatan in the coming state election and subsequently said that he had consulted with GRS leaders on the decision to work with Pakatan to ensure political stability.
The SAPP president said that the GRS supreme council had not endorsed the decision and maintained the party's stand that GRS should go solo.
Jeffrey has not officially responded to Hajiji's announcement to work with Pakatan, which is already working on an electoral pact with Barisan Nasional for the coming election.

Opposition bid to undermine GRS unity: PBS

Published on: Tuesday, August 05, 2025 Published on: Tue, Aug 05, 2025 Text Size: Dr Joachim and other officials during the cake-cutting ceremony. PENAMPANG: Acting PBS President Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam has reminded party members, particularly the youth and women's wings, not to be influenced by the opposition's attempts to create division within the party. Speaking at the 30th Annual General Meeting of the PBS Moyog Division held at Turongou Farmstay here on Saturday, he said recent claims by the opposition as efforts to disrupt party unity. Dr Joachim also dismissed allegations that he and Star President Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan were excluded from a Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) event. 'I sent a representative because I had to officiate five PBS division AGMs in Beaufort on the same day. How can anyone say PBS doesn't support the Chief Minister when many of our leaders were present?' he said. He said PBS remains committed to supporting the leadership of Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, and called on members to remain focused on the party's objectives. 'Don't be easily influenced. Stay focused. Our journey is far from over. PBS continues to be relevant,' he said. Advertisement Dr Joachim also reminded members that the current State Government was formed through cooperation between Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) and Pakatan Harapan (PH) Plus. He noted that PH had backed Hajiji during a political crisis two years ago, a move that helped maintain administrative stability. 'GRS won't forget PH's support during that time. The opposition will try any way possible to break us. That's why we must stay united,' he said. He also thanked Moyog Division Chief John Chryso Masabal and the organising committee for inviting him to officiate the meeting. The event also included the handing over of new membership forms to Dr Joachim and was attended by party vice-presidents and members of the Women and Youth wings. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Warisan to settle PTPTN debts if possible

Published on: Tuesday, August 05, 2025 Published on: Tue, Aug 05, 2025 By: Abbey Junior Text Size: Warisan president Shafie Apdal congratulating high-scoring secondary school students at an event in his constituency of Semporna, Sabah, today. (Facebook pic) SEMPORNA: Parti Warisan president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal said a future Warisan-led state government will assist Sabahans in settling their National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) loans if Yayasan Sabah has sufficient financial resources. He said although PTPTN is a federal agency, the state could do what Sarawak has done by helping its students repay their outstanding loans. Shafie, who is also MP for Semporna and Assemblyman for Senallang, reiterated that this was in line with his earlier pledge in 2018 to restructure Yayasan Sabah to serve its original purpose of empowering Sabahans through education. He also said loan assistance would include civil servants, both active and retired, who are still servicing Yayasan Sabah education loans. 'The foundation must have the money – not other people who use it to buy over our elected representatives,' he said, without elaborating. In 2021, the Sarawak government, through Yayasan Sarawak, signed an MoU with PTPTN to help Sarawak borrowers repay their student loans. Under this scheme, those who had settled at least 30pc of their PTPTN loans were eligible for a 30pc repayment incentive on the remaining balance. Advertisement As of 2023, the initiative had disbursed over RM90 million and benefited more than 25,000 Sarawakian borrowers, with continued allocations in the state budgets for 2024 and 2025. Shafie stressed that education would remain central to Warisan's approach, alongside long-term economic reforms and industrial development. He also took aim at ongoing basic infrastructure problems in Sabah, such as the water crisis at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), calling it a 'human problem' that should not be politicised or used to penalise students. 'This is about basic needs — clean water to drink, bathe and live. When students protest, they are investigated. That's not how we solve problems,' he said. Shafie said that if Warisan is returned to power, the state would focus on building a knowledge-based society, investing in youth, and creating jobs through entrepreneurship and strategic resource development. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? RM12 billion from agriculture sector: Hajiji

Published on: Tuesday, August 05, 2025 Published on: Tue, Aug 05, 2025 Text Size: Hajiji said as a State blessed with fertile land and a tropical climate well-suited for agriculture, Sabah is taking bold steps to support the national food security agenda. Kota Kinabalu: The State Government remains committed to ensuring the agriculture sector continues to be a key driver of growth and a catalyst for a more dynamic and resilient Sabah economy. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Haji Noor said the sector is not only the third-largest contributor to the state's economy but also plays a critical role in safeguarding national food security. 'This sector contributes RM12.2 billion or 14.5 per cent to Sabah's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). 'Therefore, the State Government is prioritising efforts to further strengthen this sector through more strategic and inclusive approaches,' he said at the closing of the 2025 National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen's Day (HPPNK) at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC), Sunday. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim officiated the closing of HPPNK 2025. Also present were Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, along with federal and state leaders. Advertisement Hajiji said as a State blessed with fertile land and a tropical climate well-suited for agriculture, Sabah is taking bold steps to support the national food security agenda. Among the concrete measures is the re-establishment of the Sabah Rice and Padi Board last year — after being dissolved in 1981 — to boost the local rice industry and raise the Self-Sufficiency Level (SSL) of rice to 30 per cent by 2026 and 60 per cent by 2030. 'This is in line with the priorities of the Federal Government led by Anwar who has placed strong emphasis on agriculture, especially rice cultivation,' he said. He emphasised the importance of modern technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and smart farming to increase production efficiency, boost productivity, and attract younger generations to the sector. He said Sabah currently has 15 Permanent Food Production Parks (TKPM) that had produced over 1,494 metric tons of food products, generating more than RM4.32 million to date. Hajiji also announced Sabah's first high-impact strategic investment in the Blue Economy sector — development of a European Union-standard tuna and deep-sea seafood landing port in Kota Kinabalu by the State Government in partnership with a local company, with an investment value reaching RM360 million. He said the port is expected to land 50,000 tons of tuna annually, with the potential to generate up to RM1.8 billion in economic value per year, positioning Sabah as one of the major deep-sea players. He also urged the farming, livestock, and fishing communities in Sabah to embrace change and adopt new technologies in modern farming practices and farm management. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
