Big Hunter Dickinson News Emerges Before NBA Draft
Hunter Dickinson was one of the more productive big men over his five-year college basketball career. He played three years with the Michigan Wolverines, then spent his final two seasons with the Kansas Jayhawks.

Dickinson began his college career by earning consensus second-team All-American honors in 2021. During his time at Michigan, he helped lead the team to two NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen appearances, including one trip to the Elite Eight. A three-time All-Big Ten selection—twice named to the first team—he led Michigan in both scoring and rebounding in each of his three seasons.
Dickinson then transferred to Kansas, where he was named a 2024 All-American and earned first-team All-Big 12 honors. Granted a fifth year of eligibility, Dickinson again was named to the first-team All-Big 12 in 2025 after posting 17.4 points, 10.0 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game. The Jayhawks, ranked No. 1 in the preseason Top 25, had a disappointing season, finishing 21-13 after losing in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Despite his impressive college résumé, Dickinson is not included in ESPN's list of the top 100 draft prospects. He was also left off the list of 75 players invited to the 2025 NBA Combine and was not among the 45 participants selected for the 2025 NBA G League Elite Camp.

However, Dickinson recently got another chance to show off his skills before the draft. According to The Athletic's Will Guillory, the New Orleans Pelicans hosted Dickinson for a pre-draft workout on Thursday.
Along with Dickinson, the Pelicans also worked out North Carolina's RJ Davis, Arkansas' Johnell Davis and Wisconsin's Steven Crowl.
Even with a roster that includes star players Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram, New Orleans finished the 2024-25 season with a 21-61 record. Defense was one of the Pelican's biggest deficiencies. They had the lowest defensive rebounding percentage and gave up the second-most points in the paint. The Pelicans also ranked last in defensive efficiency, last in transition defense and 29th in rim protection this season.

New Orleans' lone draft pick in the upcoming NBA draft is the No. 7 overall selection.

James opted into his $52.6 million player option for the 2025-26 season and will once again be next to Luka on the Lakers' roster for what many have speculated to be his final season in Los Angeles. Whether LeBron ultimately retires after the upcoming year or continues his career elsewhere is the question at large. Nonetheless, the Lakers have made it clear that they are committed to building their team around Doncic, and that is apparent with this new $165 million extension. ESPN was first to report Doncic's agreement with Los Angeles on Saturday. The Lakers' young star has the full support of new ownership led by majority owner Mark Walter, who is also in charge of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the MLB, and this organization will continue to build a contending roster around him. This offseason, Luka was a leading voice in the Lakers' ability to land both Deandre Ayton and Marcus Smart after they were bought out by the Portland Trail Blazers and Washington Wizards, respectively. It is expected that the Slovenian star will continue to work closely with executive Rob Pelinka and the Lakers' front office when it comes to key roster decisions year after year. Doncic, 26, has cemented himself as one of the best basketball players in the world through his first seven NBA seasons. That is why he has been so devoted to getting in shape this summer, and that is why he will look to reach new heights during the 2025-26 season in Los Angeles. Only Doncic and Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo have averaged at least 28 points per game in each of the last four seasons. He is also one of two players in the league to average at least 25 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists every year since the 2021-22 season, joining three-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokic. Doncic is now the only player on the Lakers' payroll past the 2027-28 season. The Lakers can be aggressive in their hunt for more star-level talent around Doncic over the next several seasons, as Los Angeles can open up over $100 million in cap space in 2026, which could then carry over to 2027 when All-Stars like Giannis Antetokounmpo, Donovan Mitchell, Karl-Anthony Towns, Tyler Herro, and Trae Young potentially hit the open market. Following that report, a new update was given on New York's interest in the "Greek Freak." That update was shared by James L. Edwards III of The Athletic. "It is my understanding that Leon Rose and company have been monitoring Giannis Antetokounmpo's situation in Milwaukee very closely, even before the offseason started," Edwards wrote. The Brooklyn Nets finished the 2024-25 NBA season with a 26-56 record, ultimately getting them the eighth overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft to begin their latest rebuild. Brooklyn broke the league record by taking five players in the Draft and it seems that the foundation is being laid down. Pundits believe that the Nets should remain focused on the rebuild. ESPN's Tim Bontemps and Kevin Pelton put together a list of which each team in the NBA should be "all-in" on ahead of the 2025-26 season and the Nets were put into the "draft positioning" category. Brooklyn isn't the only team in the tier as they share the category with the Charlotte Hornets, Utah Jazz, and Washington Wizards as all of the teams are understandably focused on the future. "These were four of the NBA's bottom six teams in the standings last season, and they have the four lowest over/under totals for the 2025-26 season at ESPN BET," the ESPN duo wrote when describing why each team was in the category. "Still, all of these teams are probably at least a season away from competing for a playoff spot, and they'd love to add another top pick first." As this relates to the Nets, this statement rings true in the sense that Brooklyn does not yet have a player on the roster that is currently considered to be an All-Star at some point in their career. The Nets will enter the 2025-26 season as one of the youngest teams in the league due to the amount of youth on the roster, but the hope is that guard Egor Demin, who was taken eighth overall by Brooklyn, can realize his potential sooner rather than later.
