Sabah must start leading in oil and gas: Azis

Kota Kinabalu: Warisan on Wednesday hit out at Sabah Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun for saying the State is not ready to bid for upstream oil and gas projects, calling the statement a reflection of poor political will rather than capacity. Its Information Chief Datuk Mohd Azis Jamman said Sabah can no longer afford to remain on the sidelines while others profit from its resources. 'If we claim we lack expertise, then bring in real experts — not loyalists whose only skills are to plunder and pander,' he said in a statement, Wednesday. He said Sabah must stop relying on sub-contracts and concessions handed out by external parties, and instead take the lead in building its own capacity and control. On Tuesday, Masidi told the State Assembly that state-owned firms Sabah International Petroleum (SIP) and SMJ Energy were not bidding for oil and gas blocks due to a lack of technical know-how and capital. He was responding to Warisan President Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal (Senallang), who had questioned why Sabah firms were left out of the Mutiara Cluster project off Sandakan. The contract was recently awarded to Dialog Resources Sdn Bhd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Dialog Group Berhad based in Peninsular Malaysia. Azis questioned the rationale behind the State's passive approach and said experience can only come if Sabah starts participating actively. 'Every million starts with one. If we wait forever, we will always be excluded from our own wealth,' he said. He pointed out that the State had previously issued nearly RM1 billion in Sukuk to settle debts, including for vessels that remain unaccounted for. 'So, don't tell us it's impossible to raise funds for SMJ Energy to participate both upstream and downstream,' he said. He added that Sabah can form strategic partnerships with credible investors, provided the State retains control over the management of its natural resources. Azis also dismissed the claim that working quietly has brought results for Sabah. 'Our oil wealth continues to leave Sabah, yet our people see very little of the benefit,' he said. He stressed that the core issue is not Sabah's readiness, but whether its leaders are bold enough to prioritise the State's future over political convenience. 'True leadership isn't about waiting. PM Anwar allocates RM1m to KLFA for football revival in Kuala Lumpur
PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced an allocation of RM1 million to the Kuala Lumpur Football Association (KLFA) in support of efforts to revitalise football in the capital city. Anwar said the government consistently encouraged the development of football, which he described as a people's sport that was widely loved and participated in. However, he stressed that emphasis should be placed on infrastructure as a fundamental aspect in advancing the sport. 'This is an opportunity for us to elevate the status of national football, but it has to start from the basics. That is why what was raised just now about collaboration with the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Higher Education, or other training institutes is important. 'It's not just about funding, but adequate infrastructure is crucial — proper fields, training facilities, training academies — to ensure our children are trained well and in comfort,' he said in his speech at the KLFA's 50th Golden Jubilee celebration here today. Also present were Communications Minister and KLFA patron Datuk Fahmi Fadzil and KLFA president Syed Yazid Syed Omar. Meanwhile, Anwar also urged that sportsmanship be preserved, including proper conduct among supporters, who at times behaved beyond acceptable limits and tarnished the spirit of unity. 'There are groups of supporters that can sometimes get out of control... Losing does not mean the team should be ridiculed,' he said. The Prime Minister also said he had instructed the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) to monitor and control any incidents that could harm the image of national football, in line with the goal of sports as a medium of unity and healthy living. He said associations such as KLFA were also responsible for ensuring that sportsmanship and unity continued to be upheld among supporters and players. At the event, KLFA also announced several strategic collaborations, including with the Ministry of Education to strengthen football development at the school level and the Ministry of Youth and Sports in implementing coaching development programmes and initiatives involving youth. - Bernama

DPM Fadillah to brief GPS, GRS MPs on current national issues

Fadillah said the briefings are important to ensure all MPs in the Unity Government are well-informed on matters discussed in Cabinet. 'For GPS, we have no issue. With our small number of MPs, I can engage with them directly. These matters were discussed in Cabinet, so I know what needs to be clarified. 'If the Prime Minister were to meet all MPs individually, time would be limited. I can assist by briefing GPS and GRS MPs,' he told reporters after attending the 'AI for MY Future' programme at Centexs here today. He was responding to questions on whether GPS MPs were involved in the Prime Minister's meeting at Seri Perdana, Putrajaya, yesterday. The meeting reportedly addressed current issues, including the upcoming Parliamentary sitting. Fadillah said a full briefing session for GPS and GRS MPs would be held soon. 'A retreat involving all Unity Government MPs, including ministers and deputy ministers, is scheduled for next week. We'll use that platform to provide further explanation,' he said. 99 seats for Sarawak Assembly in line with state's geography: Fadillah
Published on: Saturday, July 12, 2025 Published on: Sat, Jul 12, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: KUCHING: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof described the increase in the number of Sarawak State Legislative Assembly seats to 99 as the right move, based on the real needs of the state, which has an area almost equal to Peninsular Malaysia. Fadillah, who is also the Member of Parliament for Petra Jaya, said the decision was based on research and debate at the state level, besides taking into account factors such as the size of the area, ethnic diversity and administrative needs, not simply based on the number of residents. 'Some say this criterion should be based on population size… however, we have to look not only at population size, but also at the size of the area and representation of ethnic groups because Sarawak is almost as large as Peninsular Malaysia. 'I support this move because it will provide more effective administration for us to develop Sarawak,' he told reporters after attending the 'AI for MY Future' course for Petra Jaya parliamentary constituency at the Centre for Technology Excellence Sarawak (Centexs) in Kuching, today. Fadillah said with the addition of state assembly seats, more rural areas will have their own elected representatives, thus allowing the voices of the local community to be brought to the state policy-making stage. Asked if the move was related to the demands under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), he stressed that the main focus was on administrative efficiency. 'I cannot say that (part of MA63), but what is more important is that we focus on administering Sarawak more effectively and efficiently,' he said. On July 7, the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly passed the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (Composition of Membership) Bill 2025 to add 17 new seats, bringing the total number of seats to 99 from 82 previously. Touching on the pilot project of the artificial intelligence (AI) course for the Petra Jaya parliamentary constituency, Fadillah said a total of 108 participants, the majority of whom were community leaders, had undergone the course to master basic skills such as data analysis and document preparation in daily affairs. He said the ultimate goal of the programme in collaboration with Microsoft is to produce a group of trainees who would then be able to train local communities, especially in rural areas.
