Snow expected in KZN? Here's where to go see it

KwaZulu-Natal might be better known for warm beaches and subtropical weather, but every winter, a few high-altitude pockets of the province turn into an icy wonderland.
When a cold front moves through, snow can fall over the Drakensberg mountains and nearby highlands, turning KZN into a mini winter escape.
Here's where to go if you're chasing that rare South African snowfall. Snow in Sani Pass. Image: canva
If you're looking for snow in KZN, Sani Pass is your best bet. Sitting at 2 876 m above sea level, this iconic mountain pass forms part of the border between South Africa and Lesotho. In winter, it's often capped with snow, especially after a cold front. How to get there: A 4×4 is essential. Tours from Underberg or Himeville are a safer choice.

This UNESCO World Heritage Site stretches along KZN's western edge and offers multiple snow spots when the weather turns. The Royal Natal section, with the towering Amphitheatre and Tugela Falls, is especially scenic under a dusting of snow. Best hikes: Try the Gudu Falls Trail or Tugela Gorge for elevated views and potential snow patches.

The charming towns of Underberg and Himeville often serve as bases for Sani Pass trips, but can also get a sprinkling of snow themselves. Even when it doesn't stick, the surrounding hills and pastures get frosty and white. Vibe: Cosy, country-town feel with local pubs, fireside lodges, and misty mornings.

Tucked between Creighton and Franklin in southern KwaZulu-Natal, Ntsikeni sits on a 1 750 m plateau and often experiences frost or snow in winter. It's less dramatic than Sani or the Amphitheatre, but still a solid pick for spotting it without extreme elevation. Good for: Family outings, birding, and easier hikes with snowy backdrops.

'The all-South African Stinger GC team is also testament to our country's rich golfing heritage, and we need to get behind our boys as a country when they are here, so that they can win their nation's inaugural tournament. 'Visitors will truly feel that they are in Africa, with access to a Big 5 reserve with lions and elephants – Dinokeng – less than an hour's drive from Steyn City. No LIV event will be anything like this one and we are confident that the world's golf lovers will make travelling to ours, the world's most beautiful country, a must-do trip on their calendar. This was announced by the organisation in a special press conference held in London on Saturday morning. The newest golf tour has been going since June 2022. South African stars Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel have been playing for the Stinger team since the inception of the tour, while Branden Grace and Dean Burmester also play on the tour. Schwartzel won the very first tournament at the Centurion Club in London. 'We have made a multi-year commitment to go to South Africa … it's incredible and amazing,' said LIV Golf CEO Scott O'Neil. The first tournament in South Africa will be held at Steyn City in Gauteng between March 20-22 next year. This means South African golf fans will get to see some of the game's greatest players who might ordinarily not come to South Africa to play. Here one thinks of Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau, Cameron Smith, Jon Rahm, Brooks Koepka and Tyrrell Hatton, among others. 'Massive' 'It's an incredible feeling, I have so many emotions,' said minister of sport Gayton McKenzie at the announcement on Saturday. 'I come from a great country and this would not have been possible without LIV Golf. They know they cannot be called an international competition if they skip a continent. 'After meeting Scott [and others] I have nothing but praise for them. We as Africans also deserve one of the greatest shows … I want to tell South Africans this is good for our economy and for people spreading false rumours about our country. 'We're going to have 54 of the world's greatest golfers in our country.' Oosthuizen said he was thrilled the tour was coming to South Africa. 'Very excited about having the tournament in South Africa. It's going to be massive for our country.'
