The Air Force fitness test may soon include 2-mile runs twice a year
'Yes, PT changes are coming,' Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force David Flosi wrote in a post on that was widely distributed to Air Force leaders on Microsoft Teams last Thursday. Officials in Flosi's office provided Task & Purpose with a copy of the note, part of which first circulated on social media, including the Air Force amn/nco/snco Facebook group.
Though officials said changes to the current Air Force standards are 'pre-decisional,' Flosi wrote that he expected a longer run, a return to a new version of 'tape test' measurements, and for PT tests to be administered twice each year.
Flosi sent the note last Thursday, an official said, as a call for general readiness as Air Force personnel were scrambling into sudden deployments as the U.S. considered joining Israeli airstrikes against Iran.
'These Airmen join many thousands already on missions around the world, from embedded SOF in all COCOMs, to our institutional Airmen building, training and educating the force, to the Minuteman III force on alert and ready to go right now,' Flosi wrote. 'Any day could be the day.'
'The day,' it turned out, was two days later, as B-2's led strikes on Iranian nuclear sites as part of Operation Midnight Hammer.
An Air Force spokesperson said no details would be available on specific new requirements until they are finalized.
'The Air Force is finalizing updates to its Physical Fitness Assessment following a comprehensive ten-month review,' the spokesperson said in an emailed statement. 'Updates to the program will be formally released once the guidance is finalized.'
The Air Force's current PT test includes a 1.5-mile run, push-ups and a core abdominal event, and is administered annually. The Air Force's tests have moved toward more traditional fitness events like runs and calisthenics in recent years, after several decades of less rigorous tests.
In the 1940s, the Air Force adopted a plan of 'aviation calisthenics,' according to a 2023 history of Air Force fitness compiled by the service. That workout program included sit-ups, pull-ups, and a 300-yard shuttle run. In the early 1960s, the service adopted the 'Five Basic Exercises' program, which was a tiered series of different exercises, from beginner level to advanced, ranging from arm circles and push-ups to ballet-like split-jumps.
In 1969, the Air Force released the Aerobics Physical Fitness Program, which included the first mandatory 1.5-mile run. The program's name was coined an Air Force flight surgeon at Wilford Hall in San Antonio, Texas, launching the term that would become ubiquitous during the fitness surges of the 1970s and 1980s.
The Air Force used only a 1.5-mile run as its annual test through the 1980s, according to a RAND study of Air Force fitness requirements published in 2021. From 1992 to 2003, the Air Force used a 'cycle ergometer,' or stationary bike, to assess fitness across the force, but that test was scrapped in 2004 when Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. John P. Jumper decreed it 'was not consistent with the growing demands of our warrior culture.'
The 1.5-mile run returned in 2004, adding push-ups and sit-ups.
The 'tape test' has been an on-again/off-again part of Air Force body composition standards for close to a decade. A test that measured only waist circumference was dropped in 2020, but the new version, Flosi said, may be based on height-to-waist ratios.
A 2016 National Institute of Health study found that the height-to-waist ratio 'is a more sensitive universal screening tool than [body mass index] to detect health risks' across gender and a wide range of ages. Generally, the NIH found, a ratio of 0.5, in which a person's waist measure is one-half of their height or less, 'can be used in different sex and ethnic groups and is generally accepted as a universal cutoff for central obesity in children (aged ≥6 years) and adults.'
Fitness tests and standards have long been a central part of military identity, and leaders of every service often tweak or even overhaul them.
The Army spent close to a decade rolling out it's 6-event Army Combat Fitness Test, then revised it earlier this year — rebranding as the Army Fitness Test — by removing an overhead throw event, universally referred to as the 'yeet.'
The Marine Corps's first fitness test in the 1950s was almost laughably easy by current standards, with a passing score achievable with three chin-ups, 25 sit-ups, and just 21 push-ups. Today, Marines take both a (much harder) traditional fitness test with a 3-mile run and strength events, and the grueling Marine Combat Fitness Test, a monster-mash-style functional fitness test that includes buddy carries and lifting sand-filled ammo cans.
The service-wide fitness test most similar to the Air Force's is the Navy Physical Readiness Test, which includes a 1.5-mile run and traditional calisthenics. But perhaps appropriately, one of its alternative events sets it apart from any of the other three services.
Unlike airmen, soldiers, or Marines, sailors nursing injuries that keep them from running can choose to swim.

Here's a breakdown of what to know. The story Two U.S. contractors, speaking to the AP on condition of anonymity because they were revealing their employers' internal operations, said they were coming forward because they were disturbed by what they considered dangerous and irresponsible practices. They said the security staff hired were often unqualified, unvetted, heavily armed and seemed to have an open license to do whatever they wished. The testimonies from the contractors — combined with the videos, internal reports and text messages obtained by the AP — offer a rare glimpse inside the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, the newly created American organization backed by Israel to feed the Gaza Strip's population. Last month, the U.S. government pledged $30 million for the group to continue operations — the first known U.S. donation to the group, whose other funding sources remain opaque. Journalists have been unable to access the GHF sites, located in Israeli military-controlled zones. The AP cannot independently verify the contractors' stories. Gaza's more than 2 million Palestinians are living through a catastrophic humanitarian crisis. For 2 1/2 months before GHF's opening in May, Israel blocked all food, water and medicine from entering Gaza, claiming Hamas was stealing the aid being transported under a preexisting system coordinated by the United Nations. It now wants GHF to replace that U.N. system. What is GHF? GHF is an American organization, registered in Delaware and established in February to distribute humanitarian aid during the ongoing Gaza humanitarian crisis. It denies deliberately shooting at any civilians and says it's examining how to reduce 'friction with the population' in the areas surrounding the distribution centers. What did AP document at the aid sites?AP spoke to the two contractors for UG Solutions, an American outfit subcontracted to hire security personnel for the distribution sites. They said bullets, stun grenades and pepper spray were used at nearly every distribution, even if there was no threat. Videos of aid being dispensed at the sites seen by the AP appear to back up the frenetic scenes the contractors described. The footage was taken within the first two weeks of its distributions — about halfway into the operations. In videos furnished by the contractor, men in grey uniforms — colleagues, he said — can be seen trying to clear Palestinians who are squeezed into a narrow, fenced-in passage leading to one of the centers. The men fire pepper spray and throw stun grenades that detonate amid the crowd. The sound of gunfire can be heard. In one video, what appear to be heavily armed American security contractors at one of the sites in Gaza discuss how to disperse Palestinians nearby. Bursts of gunfire erupt close by, at least 15 shots. 'Whoo! Whoo!' one contractor yelps. 'I think you hit one,' one says. Then comes a shout: 'Hell, yeah, boy!' The camera's view is obscured by a large dirt mound. The contractor who took the video told AP that he saw other contractors shooting in the direction of Palestinians who had just collected their food and were departing. The men shot both from a tower above the site and from atop the mound, he said. The shooting began because contractors wanted to disperse the crowd, he said, but it was unclear why they continued shooting as people were walking away. The camera does not show who was shooting or what was being shot at. But the contractor who filmed it said he watched another contractor fire at the Palestinians and then saw a man about 60 yards (meters) away — in the same direction where the bullets were fired — drop to the ground. This happened at the same time the men were heard talking — effectively egging each other on, he said. A spokesperson for Safe Reach Solutions, the logistics company subcontracted by GHF, told the AP that there have been no serious injuries at any of their sites to date. In scattered incidents, security professionals fired live rounds into the ground and away from civilians to get their attention. That happened in the early days at the 'the height of desperation where crowd control measures were necessary for the safety and security of civilians,' the spokesperson said. How were the videos verified? To confirm the footage is from the sites, AP geolocated them videos using aerial imagery. The AP also had the videos analyzed by two audio forensic experts who said they could identify live ammunition — including machine-gun fire — coming from the sites, in most cases within 50 to 60 meters of the camera's microphone. GHF says the Israeli military is not deployed at the aid distribution sites. Lt. Col. Nadav Shoshani, an army spokesman, said the army is not stationed at the sites or within their immediate proximity, especially during operating hours. He said they're run by an American company and have their own security. SRS says that Hamas has openly threatened its aid workers and civilians receiving aid. It did not specify where people were threatened. Cameras monitor food distributionsAccording to the contractor who took the videos, the Israeli army is leveraging the distribution system to access information. Both contractors said that cameras monitor distributions at each site and that American analysts and Israeli soldiers sit in a control room where the footage is screened in real time. The contractor who took the videos said some cameras are equipped with facial recognition software. In live shots of the sites seen by the AP, some videos streams are labeled 'analytics' — those were the ones that had the facial recognition software, said the contractor. The AP could not independently verify his information. SRS denied gathering intelligence and said it has never used biometrics. An Israeli security official who was not named in line with the army's protocol, said there are no security screening systems developed or operated by the army within the aid sites. Training and expertise are at issue The rollout of UG Solutions' operations was jumbled and lacked leadership, the two contractors told the AP. Each contractor was equipped with a pistol, stun grenades, tear gas and an Israeli-made automatic rifle capable of firing dozens of rounds within seconds, said the contractor who took the videos. A spokesperson for the GHF said there are people with a 'vested interest' in seeing it fail and are willing to do or say almost anything to make that happen. The spokesperson said the team is composed of seasoned humanitarian, logistics and security professionals with deep experience on the ground. The group says it has distributed the equivalent of more than 50 million meals in Gaza in its food boxes of staples. A spokesperson for UG Solutions, Drew O'Brien, said UG has an extensive recruiting and training process, including 'a detailed application process, screening by experts, reference checks, background checks and weapons proficiency.' The group said it prides itself on repeated quality control checks once missions are underway.

MAHA's Focus On Improving Nutrition Is At Odds With Trump Policies

Kennedy Jr. said the focus is childhood chronic disease prevention, with a particular emphasis on nutrition. But several key Trump administration policies appear to be inconsistent with this goal. And the report does not include several notably absent topics that are known to cause certain chronic diseases. The first MAHA Commission report released in May identifies multifarious drivers of childhood chronic disease, including poor diet and specifically the shift over time to ultra-processed foods, overuse of pesticides in agriculture, food dyes in products for sale in grocery stores and a cumulative overload of chemicals in the environment. The document offers a potpourri of high-level policy recommendations to counter these trends. In a tweet, Kennedy touted on June 19th that 'artificial dyes and additives are being removed from America's food supply.' Thus far, however, only Red Dye No. 3 has been banned and this occurred under the Biden administration. Manufacturers have until Jan. 2027 to remove this specific dye from their products. The HHS budget for 2026 proposes $14 billion in discretionary funding for programs that aim to reverse what Secretary Kennedy calls the 'chronic disease epidemic,' as it consolidates entities housed under the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention into the Administration for a Healthy America, namely the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion and the Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity. AHA is being called the 'primary federal agency committed to transforming the health of all Americans by addressing the root causes of chronic disease, promoting preventive care, advancing mental health and substance use services, and increasing access to a healthy environment and foods.' But only $2 million is being allocated to nutrition, an amount experts suggest is inadequate. They believe the figure should be doubled to at least $4 billion to achieve the objectives laid out by Secretary Kennedy. And despite the MAHA report raising concerns about American agricultural products, other Trump cabinet officials insist that the nation's food supply is safe. Differences in views on glyphosate, a commonly used chemical sprayed on crops, illustrate the disconnect. Glyphosate is cited in the report as a major contributor in the rise of chronic disease. It is a substance that may cause serious health problems, including cancer. But the administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, Lee Zeldin, doesn't want to further regulate glyphosate. On food safety generally, Kennedy appears to be at odds with director Zeldin's decisions to deregulate pesticides. The MAHA report makes dozens of references to dietary guidelines and food standards in Europe that prohibit the use of certain pesticides in agriculture. However, Zeldin has promised no more regulations, arguing that European-style mandates would stifle economic growth. Furthermore, Congress and the Trump administration back cuts to assistance programs, such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, that would seem to undermine efforts to improve people's access to food, whether of high or low quality. Food and diet researchers are also criticizing the direction the National Institutes of Health are going in possibly stifling debate regarding the merits and demerits of different foods. According to STAT News, more than 70 top U.S. nutrition scientists signed a letter last month demanding that NIH director Jay Bhattacharya address alleged censorship at the agency, writing that their colleagues 'need the freedom to present their findings in scientific meetings without political oversight, and to author and co-author freely in the scientific literature.' The letter is in part a response to censorship allegations from former top NIH nutrition scientist Kevin Hall, whose research on ultra-processed foods was cut short when he resigned in April, complaining of interference from his superiors. The MAHA Commission report attributes adverse health effects to nutrient depletion owing to 'ultra-processed grains, sugars, and fats,' as well as intake of more calories and inclusion of food additives. There is empirical support for this. For example, a 2024 review of the evidence, which included dozens of analyses, linked 'higher consumption of ultra-processed foods to poor cardiometabolic health, increasing the risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, and cardiovascular disease.' At the same time, the scientific evidence for how ultra-processed foods affect our health isn't unequivocal. In fact, according to a story by the New Scientist covering a recent meeting of the American Society for Nutrition, scientists don't agree that simply opting for less processed foods guarantees a healthy diet. Additionally, former Director of FDA's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition during the Obama, Trump, and Biden administrations from 2015 to 2023, Susan Mayne, says the report omits other well-accepted drivers of chronic disease, such as high intake of sodium and saturated fat. Instead, it criticizes the current set of U.S. dietary guidelines for 'problematic reductionist recommendations' in reference to advice to 'reduce saturated fat' or 'limit sodium.' But in the case of sodium, this seems to ignore decades of research showing that sodium is over-consumed in the U.S., contributing to chronic disease. There are other conspicuous apparent oversights regarding HHS policy. For instance, STAT News notes that the MAHA Commission report includes no mentions of eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa or binge-eating. Such eating disorders have been on the rise for decades, especially among young women and girls. Evidently, research on these eating disorders is being disproportionately affected by ongoing federal grant terminations, according to experts in the field. Also, Reuters reports that despite rising levels of alcoholism, which is conducive to a myriad of chronic diseases, revisions to the U.S. dietary guidelines under RFK Jr. may loosen federal guidance on alcohol consumption that currently advises no more than one to two daily drinks.
