USA Today30-05-2025
The NCAA Baseball Tournament started on Friday, and the FSU baseball team is set to hit the field. The Seminoles are the No. 9 overall seed and will play the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats in the first game of the Tallahassee Regional at 3 p.m. ET on the ACC Network.
FSU is looking to make another deep postseason run under head coach Link Jarrett, while the Wildcats are looking for their first-ever win over the Seminoles. Florida State leads the all-time series 9-0 and is 5-0 in the postseason, this is Bethune-Cookman's fifth time being in the Tallahassee Regional.
The Seminoles are the heavy favorites to win the regional, but it is important to win the first game of the double-elimination tournament and they will face some tough competition. The good news is that they have been excellent at home all season, going 24-7 and have even picked up a win over the Wildcats. They beat them 9-7 in a midweek game back in March.
Stay right here as FSU Wire will have live updates throughout the game and have plenty of coverage afterward.
Top of the First: Joey Volini escapes jam with a double-play
Bethune-Cookman started the game with back-to-back singles to put some early pressure on Volini and FSU. A flyout advanced both runners with one out. The Seminoles were able to escape as Gage Harrelson caught a line drive in right field and doubled Andrey Martinez off second base to keep it a 0-0 game.

FSU has opted not to start its ace in Jamie Arnold and is going with Volini, the No. 2 pitcher in the starting rotation who has also been one of the best pitchers in the ACC this season. He is coming off his first relief appearance of the season against North Carolina in the ACC Baseball Championship. He had a strong showing, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits and one walk. He recorded four strikeouts and will look to carry the momentum into his biggest start of the season.

Florida State QB Thomas Castellanos stands by his Alabama comments at ACC media day

Thomas Castellanos is not backing down from the way he views Alabama. The new Florida State quarterback appeared at ACC media days on Tuesday and was immediately asked about what he said in a summer interview with On3. In it, Castellanos said he was excited for his first game with the Seminoles in Week 1 against the Crimson Tide and that 'they don't have Nick Saban to save them. I just don't see them stopping me.' Tuesday, Castellanos kept that confidence. The Crimson Tide went 9-4 in Kalen DeBoer's first season in 2024 and ended the season with a ReliaQuest Bowl loss to Michigan. 'We stand on what I said,' Castellanos said. 'But there's no disrespect between that team or anything like that. It's just the confidence that I have in my teammates and the way we've been preparing and putting this preparation together this offseason. I just feel confident in the guys and the work that we've been putting in.' The former Boston College quarterback transferred to Tallahassee after the 2024 season and is tasked with upgrading the porous quarterback play that plagued Florida State last season. The Seminoles were 2-10 and averaged just 15 points per game as the offense was one of the worst in the country. After starting his career at UCF, Castellanos played two seasons at Boston College. He opened the 2024 season as the Eagles' starter but lost his starting job early in November in a game against Syracuse after he was just 2-of-7 passing in the first half. Not long after he lost his starting job, Castellanos left the team and said he would enter the transfer portal. He arrives at Florida State along with former UCF coach Gus Malzahn, the man who recruited him to UCF. Malzahn left his job at UCF for the FSU offensive coordinator job after the 2024 season. 'We have an opportunity here to really do something special, and I think that his focus is there on the offensive side of the ball, and he's one of the best that have ever done it,' Florida State coach Mike Norvell said of Malzahn on Tuesday. 'But he also brings perspective as a big picture, to continue to challenge every element within the organization, just to push to be the best, to be able to accomplish and do some of the things that he's been able to do on his journey and what we all aspire to be.'

Florida State QB Thomas Castellanos doubles-down on Alabama football comments

Thomas Castellanos is not backing down. The Florida State quarterback and Boston College transfer made headlines in June when he spoke with On3 about the Seminoles' season opener against Alabama football Aug. 30. "I dreamed of moments like this," Castellanos said. "I dreamed of playing against Alabama. They don't have Nick Saban to save them. I just don't see them stopping me." While Castellanos' comments sparked a fire from select Crimson Tide football players, the Florida State quarterback is doubling down. When asked at ACC media days if he "would have said some things differently," Castellanos agreed, but stood by his initial statement. "We stand on what I said," Castellanos told reporters. "I said what I said, and we stand on that. I don't mean no disrespect to none of those guys at Alabama or anything like that. I just have confidence in my guys and the work we have been putting in and preparing and the preparation we've been putting together. That's all that was. No disrespect to those guys, but we stand on what I said." At SEC media days, Alabama linebacker Deontae Lawson said he "won't forget what (Castellanos) said and that "all disrespect will be addressed accordingly." Alabama offensive tackle Kadyn Proctor said the Crimson Tide is "not really giving into whatever anybody else is saying." "It's all internal," Proctor said. "Keeping it in house." Alabama will open the 2025 season at Florida State Aug. 30. Colin Gay covers Alabama football for The Tuscaloosa News, part of the USA TODAY Network.
