The joke goes ‘who's buried in Grant's Tomb?' but NYers can't agree on the punchline

Don't take a good joke for Grant-ed. Most people have heard the joke 'who's buried in Grant's Tomb?' but New Yorkers and tourists at the famous Morningside Heights landmark this week couldn't agree what the punchline is. The obvious answer is the so-obvious-it-can't-be-correct 'Grant' as in Civil War general and former US President Ulysses S. Grant. But maybe it's also 'Grant and his wife' — or no one at all. Advertisement 8 Most people have heard the joke 'who's buried in Grant's Tomb?' but New Yorkers and tourists at the famous Morningside Heights landmark couldn't agree on what the punchline is. Robert Miller 8 A group about to go on a tour of Grant's Tomb, located in Riverside Park, Upper West Side. Robert Miller 'Actually, he's entombed. He's not buried!' said S.F., who was visiting the tomb on the Upper West Side on July 23, the 140th anniversary of Grant's death. Advertisement 'It's Grant and his wife, Julia,' S.F. added. 'I don't know whether his dog is in there or not.' 'Definitely not Grant, but somebody,' joked Abdullah Hashimi, 19, who was visiting the tomb from nearby Columbia University on July 23, the 140th anniversary of Grant's death. 'Just because it's Grant Tomb, it could be anybody!' 8 'Definitely not Grant, but somebody,' joked Abdullah Hashimi, 19, who was visiting the tomb from nearby Columbia University on the 140th anniversary of Grant's death. 'Just because it's Grant Tomb, it could be anybody!' Robert Miller Lifelong New Yorker Pat Sopak, 75, said the punchline has changed over the years — to maximize it's punch. The former Union Army hero's 1885 funeral was reportedly attended by 1.5 million at a time when the city's entire population was 2 million. 8 'It's too weird. Today it attracts about 110,000 visitors per year and is run by the National Parks Service. Park Ranger Miranda Allen said she's asked about 'who's buried in Grant's tomb' nearly everyday. She attributed its origins to 'You Bet Your Life,' the Groucho Marx-hosted quiz show from the 1950s and said it was written as an easy question for Marx's contestants who might need redemption. 8 Park Ranger Miranda Allen said she's asked about the joke nearly everyday. Robert Miller 8 'In order to be buried, you have to be in the ground,' Allen said. 'Since the remains are in sarcophagi, so they're actually above ground. So no one is buried in Grant's Tomb,' she said, joking the correct answer is 'no one.' Robert Miller 'However, they didn't consider the semantics of the question when they wrote it. So, when you're asked 'who's buried in Grant's Tomb?' it's easy to assume, well, it's Grant. Sometimes we'll get 'well, actually it's Grant and his wife.'' Advertisement Allen said the joke's on them though — the correct answer really is 'no one.' 'Because in order to be buried, you have to be in the ground.' Allen said. 'And given that this is a mausoleum, since the remains are in sarcophagi, so they're actually above ground. So no one is buried in Grant's Tomb.'

Why second MLB retirement has ex-Red Sox pitcher at peace

Daniel Bard's second retirement has him feeling at peace. And he took to Instagram to share a lengthy post about his decision. 'I've retired as a player once before. In 2017, I felt chewed up and spit out by the game I had given everything to. I resented baseball. Throwing a baseball hadn't felt like fun in years. Moving on was a massive weight off my shoulders. 'This time, it's different. I couldn't be more appreciative for what baseball has done for me and my family. I found the fun and beauty in the game again. I've made countless friends around the country. I've been able to share the experiences, travel, the highs and lows with Adair and the kids, and they're old enough to remember it this time. I got to pitch in a professional baseball game on my 40th birthday. I've come back from the yips multiple times, been through several surgeries and their rehabs, and I couldn't be more thankful for the whole journey.' 'So here's to the end of one chapter and the beginning of the next. -Bardo' Bard officially retired earlier this month. The former Boston Red Sox pitcher attempted an MLB comeback after he missed the entire 2024 season after he underwent surgery on his right elbow flexor tendon. But whether he was unable to find a team or just felt his recovery didn't have him at 100%, he decided it was best to walk away. Bard spent five seasons with the Red Sox — his last being 2013. He retired in 2018 after a five-year hiatus before the pitcher returned to the mound in 2020 with the Rockies. He spent four seasons in Colorado and was named the 2020 Comeback Player of the Year. In 2023, the last time Bard pitched in an MLB game, he amassed a 4.56 ERA with 47 strikeouts in 50 games. Bristol Motor Speedway ready for Atlanta Braves, Cincinnati Reds MLB showdown inside the 'Colosseum'

BRISTOL, Tenn. – A record-breaking crowd will be in attendance next weekend at Bristol Motor Speedway for the inaugural 'Speedway Classic' that will see the Atlanta Braves take on the Cincinnati Reds inside the place known as the 'Colosseum', thanks to Major League Baseball and FOX. Having previously hosted an event outside the norm, speedway officials are ready to break in another first for the historic venue, as baseball fans will descend upon East Tennessee for this highly anticipated game that is taking place inside a racetrack. On Friday, Bristol officials gave OutKick a tour of what was to come next Saturday. While the day will start with fans flooding an outdoor party that includes a concert from Tim McGraw, Jake Owens and Pitbull, the real show begins when both teams take to the field for a showdown that will take place on the infield of the gigantic speedway. As you will see if attending, walking into this gigantic venue for a baseball game will assuredly blow your mind, if Friday's sneak peek was any indication. Having spent the past few years planning this Major League Baseball event that will be broadcast on FOX, speedway officials have allowed the construction crew to do what they do best, which is put together something beyond imaginable. Even though I covered the 'Battle at Bristol' years ago, which saw Tennessee and Virginia Tech face-off on a football field inside the cathedral, I have to admit this baseball event looks as though track officials have stepped it up a notch when it comes to broadening their mindset on big events. Luckily for fans attending, there is really not a bad seat in the house, thanks to construction crews that have been working around the clock to make sure the turf is ready for Major League Baseball. From the indoor batting cages, outdoor bullpen and insane setup, this truly goes down as one of the most imaginative events in recent event history. While the football game was entertaining, it's obvious that track president Jerry Caldwell put a lot of thought into hosting this event, which started when the MLB noticed the track was hosting a college football game. Now, with the turf down, and the temporary bleachers being setup, it's all starting to come together for the exciting event. While track officials did not release the number of tickets sold, they told OutKick that this baseball event would be record-breaking when it comes to attendance. Besides the action that will take place on the field, next Saturday will be filled with plenty of events for families and fans, which includes a tailgate party outside the track, before folks start making their way inside the enormous stadium. The concerts will start before the game at 6 p.m. on the infield stage, as both teams warm-up on the beautiful field. For the fans sitting in the outfield, don't worry, there will be an opportunity to catch plenty of homeruns, given that there will not be a fence setup in the outfield. It's easy to see that all parties have spent a lot of money putting this event together. While we did not get to see what the clubhouse looks like for both teams, they look to be pretty massive, along with the indoor pitching and batting areas for players. If you are watching from home, don't worry. The FOX broadcast will have plenty of interesting events for the television audience, though Bristol officials have kept those quiet for now. Make sure to follow the OutKick platforms and myself for coverage of the event next weekend, along with FOX.
