Vacation at your own risk: These are the most dangerous beaches in the US — here's what horrors await

New York Post17-06-2025
While many vacationers are ready to throw on their bathing suits, slather on the SPF and head to the beach for some fun in the sun this summer — researchers at Tideschart, a leading tide forecasting platform, are warning travelers to steer clear of these 10 dangerous beaches.
What makes a beach risky to hang out at? Shark attacks, surf-related deaths and hurrianes, of course.
The Tideschart team carefully analyzed over 500 shorelines in the US and determined that Florida has the most frightening beaches. The 10 beaches that made the cut were given a score out of 100.
New Smyrna Beach snagged the No. 1 spot on this list with a score of 76.92. The Tideschart team said this beach, which lies on the northwestern side of Florida, is most likely to get hit by brutal hurricanes because of its location.
3 New Smyrna Beach is known for its beautiful, wide sandy beaches.

And to make matters worse, this coast has earned itself the title of the 'Shark Bite Capital of the World' since it has the highest likelihood of shark attacks. New Smyrna Beach also experienced 12 surf fatalities between 2010 and 2024.
Coming in at No. 2 on this terrifying list is Laguna Beach with a 67.75 rating. This Panama City beach had the most surf-related deaths — 39 to be exact — of all the analyzed beaches, in addition to nine shark attacks.
Popular tourist destination, Daytona Beach — which is on the eastern side of Florida — came in third on the list with a score of 64.47. Thanks to the beach's powerful currents, there have been 27 reported surfing deaths and almost 70 shark attacks.
3 Daytona came in at No. 3 on the list of the most dangerous beaches.

Beware, Miami Beach lovers: this coastal city ranked No. 4 with a 46.49 score, 13 surf-related deaths and almost 20 shark attacks.
The Indialantic Ocean Beach Park might be considered the smallest beach boardwalk in the world — but it sure is mighty. This hazardous beach earned itself a score of 44.64 for its nine surf fatalities and 30 shark attacks.
3 Florida is home to all 10 beaches on this list.

Here are the top 10 most dangerous beaches in the US
New Smyrna Beach, Florida, 76.92 Laguna Beach, Florida, 67.75 Daytona Beach, Florida, 64.47 Miami Beach, 46.49 Indialantic Boardwalk, Florida, 44.64 Cocoa Beach, Florida, 44.01 Palm Beach, Florida, 43.53 Miramar Heights Beach, Florida, 41.88 Cape Canaveral, Florida, 40.75 Jupiter Beach Park, Florida, 40.37
Although Florida might have the most dangerous beaches, thankfully, New York is home to one of the best beaches in America.
Cooper's Beach — located on the Southampton shores on the eastern end — was given this title by Florida International University environmental sciences expert Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman, aka 'Dr. Beach.'
This beach was praised for its 'white quartz sand' and 'large sand dunes covered by American beach grass interspersed with extravagant mansions.'
'It's a big, beautiful beach,' Leatherman told CNN.

Trump orders Interior to look at raising revenue at national parks

President Trump ordered the Department of the Interior to look at raising revenue at national parks by increasing entry fees for foreign tourists. Trump signed an executive order Thursday directing Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum to develop a 'strategy' to boost revenue and improve recreational experiences at national parks around the country by hiking entrance fees and recreation pass fees for foreign tourists. The White House said that by raising prices, national parks will become more affordable for American families. The order does not specify how much the prices would go up or when they would be implemented. The administration argued that additional revenue will 'fuel investment in our national parks, reduce the maintenance backlog, construct critical infrastructure improvements and support conservation projects that improve our majestic national parks.' The White House said that increasing fees for foreigners visiting the parks will 'ensure fairness.' 'American citizens fund national parks and public lands with their tax dollars, yet they are currently charged the same rate as foreign visitors who do not pay taxes, meaning that American citizens pay more to see their own national treasures than foreign visitors do,' the White House said in the fact sheet. The executive order comes as the administration has proposed a 30 percent cut to National Park Service staffing budgets and service operations. The proposed reductions have troubled some Republicans in Congress. 'We want to have some discussions on it and exactly how it's going to affect the park service and exactly what units the states are going to take over management. … We need more information,' Rep. Mike Simpson (R-Idaho) told The Hill in early June.

British tourist among two killed by elephant at Zambian national park

Two elderly tourists, one British and one New Zealander, have died after being attacked by an elephant during a walking safari in Zambia. The incident, confirmed by Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba, involved 68-year-old Easton Janet Taylor from the UK and 67-year-old Alison Jean Taylor from New Zealand. They were reportedly charged by a female elephant accompanied by its calf. Safari guides attempted to deter the animal by firing shots, wounding the elephant, but were unable to prevent the fatal attack. Both women died at the scene, police stated. The tragedy unfolded at the South Luangwa National Park in eastern Zambia, approximately 600 kilometres (370 miles) from the capital, Lusaka. Female elephants are known for their fierce protectiveness of their young, often reacting aggressively to perceived threats. This latest fatality follows two separate incidents last year in Zambia, where elderly American women were also killed by elephants while on safari. Juliana Gle Tourneau, 64, was thrown from a vehicle in the city of Livingstone in 2024 as a group of tourists observed a herd of elephants. One of the elephants attacked the vehicle her, according to CBS News. Tourneau's group stopped near the Maramba Cultural Bridge because of traffic caused by the herd. The woman had been visiting the country from New Mexico. Another American tourist was killed earlier that same year in a similar attack. Gail Mattson, 79, from Minnesota, was killed in Zambia 'while on her dream adventure' in March, her daughter, Rona Wells, told CBS News.

American Airlines adds 2 new domestic destinations — here's where you can fly to now

Summer is heating up, but American Airlines is already making winter vacation plans. The carrier has announced an expanded schedule for the winter season, with seven new routes and two new destinations. The two new destinations are Santa Maria Airport (SMX) in Santa Maria, California, and Friedman Memorial Airport (SUN) in Sun Valley, Idaho. 'American is focused on giving our customers the most options to pick the perfect vacation destination, and now there are even more ways to turn travel dreams into reality' Jason Reisinger, American's Managing Director of Global Network Planning, said. Markus Mainka – 'American is focused on giving our customers the most options to pick the perfect vacation destination, and now there are even more ways to turn travel dreams into reality' Jason Reisinger, American's Managing Director of Global Network Planning, said in a statement. From Sun Valley, the airline will add services to its hubs at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport (ORD) and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX). Santa Maria will get a nonstop route from Phoenix. There will also be expanded service to Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) in Fort Myers, Florida; Missoula Montana Airport (MSO) in Missoula, Montana; and Santa Fe Regional Airport (SAF) in Santa Fe, New Mexico. American Airlines' new routes include: Fort Myers to Phoenix : Daily on a Boeing 737 from Nov. 20 through Dec. 3 and from Dec. 18 through Jan. 6, 2026. : Daily on a Boeing 737 from Nov. 20 through Dec. 3 and from Dec. 18 through Jan. 6, 2026. Sun Valley to Phoenix: Daily on a CRJ700 from Dec. 18 through April 6, 2026. Ticket sales for the new routes began June 30, so travelers can start thinking about winter plans now. Most of the new destinations are popular beach or mountain destinations already served by popular airlines. Santa Maria, however, is only served by Allegiant Air with twice-weekly flights to Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) in Las Vegas, per The Points Guy. United was the last major airline to serve Santa Maria, with regional flights to San Francisco that ended in 2016, according to schedule data from aviation analytics firm Cirium. On the Chicago-Missoula and Chicago-Sun Valley routes, American's only competition is United. The mountains of Idaho are pictured. American is trying to position itself as the go-to carrier for regional and seasonal travel. Jannik Schneider – American Airlines has been trying to get into the market of smaller domestic destinations in recent years, having added Provo Airport (PVU) in Utah in 2024, and McClellan-Palomar Airport (CLD) in Carlsbad, California, earlier this year. Focusing on smaller leisure hubs is part of the carrier's goal to be seen as the go-to airline for seasonal leisure travel. American has 'opted to dig more into smaller regional airports that show signs of demand to and from the area during specific windows,' Katy Nastro, a travel expert at Going, a travel app and deals newsletter, told AFAR. 'Sun Valley and Fort Myers are two different but similar examples of just that. This showcases their bet on popular skiing and sun locations. For example, Fort Myers has shown the biggest growth in scheduled seats year over year, according to Cirium analytics. American is trying to ride that wave of growth and interest.'
