CoinDCX hit by USD 44.2 mn security breach; founders say customer funds unaffected, safe
The total exposure is being absorbed entirely by CoinDCX, using the company's treasury reserves, the company said in a First Incident Report released on Sunday.
According to the report, on July 19, at 4 AM IST, CoinDCX security systems detected an incident involving unauthorised access to one of its accounts on the partner exchange, leading to a financial exposure of about USD 44 million.
The incident once again puts the spotlight on mounting security threats in the highly volatile world of cryptocurrencies. Last year, crypto exchange WazirX faced a hack in India, leading to the loss of more than USD 230 million, and marking one of the biggest such heists in India. The theft had prompted a thorough examination of safety measures and eroded sentiments.
CoinDCX co-founders Sumit Gupta and Neeraj Khandelwal took to the social media platform X to address the situation, confirming that the attack was the result of a sophisticated server breach, targeting an internal wallet, not the ones holding customer assets.
The incident was first flagged by blockchain investigator ZachXBT, following which the exchange made the disclosure public.
"Today, one of our internal operational accounts -- used only for liquidity provisioning on a partner exchange -- was compromised due to a sophisticated server breach. I confirm that the CoinDCX wallets used to store customer assets are not impacted and are completely safe. This won't cause any loss to our customers. CoinDCX will be bearing the full amount," Gupta said.
"The total amount lost was USD 44Mn out of our treasury assets. Coindcx Treasury will be bearing these losses," Khandelwal wrote.
Following this, users rushed to check their balances, leading to a spike in withdrawal requests. The sudden surge in activity led to CoinDCX's portfolio APIs, which display user balances and transaction histories, becoming jammed and unresponsive. For several hours, many were unable to even see their holdings on the app, adding fuel to rumours and anxiety online.
The co-founders later updated that Portfolio APIs have been restored.
Affected infrastructure has been completely isolated, and CoinDCX operations continue to run normally, the company said.
CERT-In, or the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team, has been informed about the incident. Detailed forensics with two globally reputed security agencies is being carried out, and reports will be shared for public benefit, it added.
"CoinDCX services remain fully operational. Trading activity, INR deposits and INR withdrawals continue. INR withdrawals below ₹ 5 lakhs will reflect in your account within 5 hours, while withdrawals above ₹ 5 lakhs will be processed within 72 hours. The incident was isolated and has no impact on your portfolio access or operations," the company stated.
Social media is flooded with mixed reactions. While some praised CoinDCX for absorbing the losses and protecting user funds, others criticised the delay in public disclosure and raised concerns over the broader security of crypto platforms in India.
"Coindcx silent for 17 hours? That's more suspense than a thriller! In crypto, transparency isn't optional; it's key. Stay open to keep trust alive!" a user wrote.
"Good to see CoinDCX acting responsibly, assuring user funds are safe, and not passing losses onto customers. Sets a positive precedent for Indian crypto exchanges," another said.

Are Indian MBA Aspirants Ditching US For India? LinkedIn Post Sparks Debate
Many Indian MBA aspirants are rethinking their plans to study in the United States and instead choosing top B-schools within the country. A recent LinkedIn post claims this shift is due to ongoing immigration issues in the US and rising anti-Indian sentiment. The post has sparked a wide range of reactions online, with many questioning if this is a temporary trend or a real change in mindset. The post was shared on the professional networking platform LinkedIn by user Aviral Bhatnagar. It cites a professor from IIM Ahmedabad and reads: "Spoke to one of my IIM A professors who is also a chairperson. He was upbeat about students this year, saying that many US MBA aspirants are choosing to study in India due to immigration chaos. Fascinating that the on-ground impact is almost immediate, talent is staying back." The post suggests that because of confusion and strict rules around US immigration, many students who would have gone abroad for an MBA are now staying back and applying to Indian institutes. It points to an immediate impact being seen at ground level in top institutes like IIMs. While NDTV cannot verify the authenticity of the conversation quoted in the post, it has triggered mixed reactions online. Comments on the post reflect a wide range of opinions One user wrote: "The concept of brain drain is often viewed negatively in India, but it's actually a natural outcome of global economic forces... Trying to block this movement wouldn't create more jobs at home; it could lead to higher unemployment and underutilisation of skills." Another user said: "Talent is staying back? Too early to say that. There are chances that the same group of students would migrate overseas for their jobs after graduation. This is a temporary constraint." A third comment noted: "It's fascinating how these immigration challenges are turning into unexpected opportunities for india's business schools and creating this natural talent pipeline that benefits everyone locally." A fourth user pointed out: "Talent that's being forced to stay back due to geopolitical reasons only, is not going to stay back the moment things on that front change... the factors which forced leakage of talent from India are still the same." A fifth user added: "I think it's a temporary phenomenon... the only way we can take advantage is if we can sustain this trend and expand capacities in IITs, IIMs, AIIMS etc. Otherwise, it will only add competition in our already intense competitive landscape."

British Royal Navy's F-35B jet takes off from Kerala airport a month after emergency landing
A month after it made an emergency landing, the British Royal Navy's F-35B jet took off from the international airport in Kerala on Tuesday. The F-35B from the Royal Navy's aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales made the landing in Thiruvananthapuram when it was undertaking a routine flight outside the Indian air defence identification zone, which is a designated area of airspace extending beyond a country's sovereign territory. Thiruvananthapuram was designated as the emergency recovery airfield, a location where aircraft can land in the event of an in-flight emergency. Earlier, The Indian Express reported that the parking fee for the jet fight is being calculated as per the existing norms. 'It would range between Rs 15,000 and Rs 20,000 a day. Besides, there would be a fee for land for the fighter jet and the Airbus. It is calculated between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 2 lakh. Air India will fix the fee for using their Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility at the airport,' told the official. A 14-memver team of engineers from the UK was in on a Royal Air Force Airbus A400M Atlas aircraft to assess and repair the fighter aircraft 'The UK has accepted the offer of a space in the Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility, and are in discussions to finalise arrangements with relevant authorities. Nirmal Bang sees up to 26% upside in food aggregators' stock; initiates Buy
Food delivery aggregators, Eternal, parent of Zomato and Swiggy, shares were in demand on Tuesday, July 22, 2025. On BSE, Eternal shares rose 14.8 per cent, clocking an all-time high at ₹311.6 per share. Similarly, Swiggy's share price climbed 7.8 per cent, logging an intraday high at ₹426.35 per share. At 9:52 AM, Eternal share price was trading 10.56 per cent higher at ₹299.85 per share, and Swiggy was up 4.8 per cent at ₹414.5 on BSE. In comparison, the BSE Sensex rose 0.23 per cent at 82,391.02. Why were Swiggy and Zomato shares buzzing in trade? Eternal shares were in demand after the company posted its Q1FY26 numbers. Post the Q1 results, brokerages made an upward revision in the target, which boosted rally in the stock. Apart from that, domestic brokerage Nirmal Bang initiated coverage on Eternal and Swiggy with a 'Buy' rating. The brokerage has a target of ₹500 per share on Swiggy and ₹315 on Eternal. Convenience-led food consumption and the quick commerce segment are flourishing even though private consumption growth is facing underlying challenges, according to the brokerage. According to Kantar, a marketing data and analytics company, overall fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) growth slowed to 4.2 per cent in FY25 from 6.6 per cent in FY24, with urban FMCG growth moderating to 4.4 per cent, down from 7.6 per cent last year) and rural growth easing to 4 per cent from 5.8 per cent. However, Eternal's food delivery business revenue, in the same period, grew 27 per cent and Swiggy's by 23 per cent in FY25, while Blinkit's quick commerce segment surged 126 per cent and Swiggy's Instamart by 118 per cent. Indian online food delivery and quick commerce markets have emerged as rare and powerful engines of growth, driven by digital adoption, convenience-first consumer behavior, and platform-led innovation. The online food delivery market, valued at approximately ₹63,000 crore (US$7.3 billion) in 2023, is projected to nearly triple to ₹14-17 trillion (US$17-21 billion) by 2028, registering a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 17-22 per cent. At the same time, India's quick commerce market—offering ultra-fast delivery of daily essentials—is expected to witness explosive growth, expanding from ₹22,400 crore (US$2.8bn) in 2023 to ₹2.3-4.2 trillion (US$29-53 billion) by 2028 at a CAGR of 60-80 per cent with nearterm annual growth projected at 80-100 per cent. Individually, Nirmal Bang expects Swiggy's adjusted Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (Ebitda) as percentage of gross order value (GOV) in out-of-home consumption it to exceed 1.5 per cent by FY27E, supported by growing ad revenues, although the company's guided range stands at 4-5 per cent over the medium-to-long term. In Eternal's case, the brokerage anticipates food delivery adjusted Ebitda as percentage of GOV to expand to 5.1 per cent by FY27E, driven by better logistics, ad monetisation, and assortment. In quick commerce, Blinkit remains the leader with nearly two times GOV of Instamart in FY25 and a premium average order value (AOV) of ₹667 against ₹514 of Instamart. GOV is expected to clock 72 per cent CAGR over FY25-FY27E, led by strong growth in order volumes. Further, with Hyperpure and the going-out business continuing to be in the investment zone, these two segments are valued on EV/GOV and EV/Sales on FY27E.
