He was speaking at the inauguration of a new kitchen and office under the Karunya initiative, run by Emfriends Charitable Trust, which has been serving free dinners to inpatient attendants at Wenlock for the past eight years. The facility was inaugurated at M.R. Bhat Lane in Jeppu, Mangaluru.
Dr Shivaprakash noted that while a large number of patients hail from districts outside Dakshina Kannada, maintaining hygiene and appeal is essential for encouraging local residents to also seek treatment at the hospital. "A new block connecting various departments, with electric buggies and other patient-friendly amenities, will be built at a cost of ₹24 crore," he said. An additional ₹3.5 crore is currently being utilised for restoration of old hospital structures, he added.
Speaking on the occasion, former Lions District Governor Vasanth Kumar Shetty lauded the charity's continuous service. 'Feeding the hungry is one of the greatest forms of service. Emfriends has sustained this noble initiative for eight years, which is a testament to their commitment,' he said.
The event was inaugurated by Mohammad Sharif Bolar, Managing Director of the Whitestone Group of Companies. Emfriends Charitable Trust president Sujah Mohammad presided over the function, while key trustees including Zubair Bulerikatte were present.
Mohammad Hanif Haji Goltamajalu, head of the Karunya initiative, welcomed the gathering and presented the overview of the project.

Govt. hospitals turning into killing centres: Venugopal
Launching a scathing attack on the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government, senior Congress leader K.C. Venugopal, MP, has said that government hospitals in the State have turned into ' killing centres' owing to an acute shortage of medicines, surgical equipment, and staff. Speaking at a dharna organised by the Kannur District Congress Committee here, he alleged that the Health sector was crumbling due to the government's apathy and financial mismanagement. 'Government hospitals, the lifeline of the common man, are being systematically demolished to benefit the private lobby,' Mr. Venugopal said. He cited the example of Dr. Harris Hasan, who publicly disclosed delays in surgeries at a government medical college hospital because of a shortage of equipment. 'Many other doctors share his view but fear government reprisal,' he said, accusing the Chief Minister of silencing critics. He attributed the crisis to the government's 'financial mismanagement' and said that it owed nearly ₹1,000 crore to pharmaceutical companies and had racked up arrears across schemes like Karunya. 'Is this the so-called Kerala model?' he asked, accusing the Finance Minister of hiding true figures and slashing the Health budget. Highlighting reports of corruption and malpractice, including the PPE kit scam during COVID-19, Mr. Venugopal said that even life-saving drugs were unavailable. Doctors are forced to ask patients to buy basic tools for treatment, he added. Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president Sunny Joseph echoed Mr. Venugopal's views, saying that the Health Minister, who blamed the system without fixing it, had no right to stay in office. He said the Health Minister had initially rejected Dr. Hasan's claims, but later backtracked due to public outrage. 'Doctors are forced to protest even on Doctor's Day. That's how bad things have become,' he said, announcing a UDF-appointed Commission to study the crisis and hold a medical conclave.

Mangaluru Marks International Yoga Day with Unique ‘Jalayoga' Display
Mangaluru: In a creative celebration of the 11th International Day of Yoga, Mangaluru witnessed a unique demonstration of Jalayoga—a form of yoga practised in water—at the city's main public swimming pool. Around 40 members of a local amateur swimming group participated in the event, performing traditional yoga postures such as Padmasana and Shavasana while floating in the pool's 16-foot-deep water. Organisers said the buoyancy of water eased pressure on the muscles, allowing participants to hold poses with greater ease and stability. 'Jalayoga is a blend of asanas, breathing techniques and meditation performed in water. It helps in improving flexibility, muscle strength, and also induces a deep sense of calm,' said one of the organisers. A highlight of the event was the unusual gesture by S.M. Shivaprakash, retired Dean of the Mangaluru University of Fisheries, who wrote a postcard to Prime Minister Narendra Modi while swimming in the pool. 'Dear Modiji, Happy International Yoga Day. I am writing this postcard while swimming in the pool. Fit India – Shivaprakash, Mangaluru,' read the message, which attracted attention for its novelty. Speaking to reporters, Shivaprakash said the Prime Minister had played a key role in taking yoga to the global stage. 'Yoga is the harmony of mind, body, and soul. I wanted to show how it can be practised in water and still convey its essence,' he said. The event was organised under this year's Yoga Day theme—One Earth, One Health—with the support of the Mangaluru City Corporation Swimming Pool. Participants described the experience as both physically rejuvenating and mentally refreshing. 'This was our first Jalayoga session, and it's been memorable,' said group member Chandrahass Shetty. The event underlined how yoga continues to evolve with creative expressions, while retaining its core as a tool for holistic well-being.
