Student's vegan chocolate a hit

Unlike Willy Wonka, chocolate-maker Lucian Petherick blends into a crowd.
And that is the way he likes it.
If people knew the unassuming 18-year-old University of Otago food sciences and chemistry student had designed his own chocolate bar, he might get swarmed by confectionery lovers.
"Everyone keeps asking me for some."
His Hokey Pokey Gold block of chocolate recently won him an NZQA Top Scholar award in technology and proved so popular with taste testers that Wellington-based craft vegan chocolate company Wonderland Chocolate has geared up to produce it in commercial quantities.
"It's a vegan chocolate, so it's made with a cashew milk base, not a dairy milk base," he said.
"I chose a specific cocoa bean with a really nice honey, raisiny, milky sort of flavour and turned it into chocolate.
"And then that was combined with a hokey pokey that I made using a whole lot of trial and error to create this sort of hokey pokey crunchy chocolate.
"I did more than 30 different hokey pokeys, trying to create the perfect hokey pokey for this chocolate bar."
He said he designed the chocolate as part of his food science and food technology year 13 scholarship project last year.
"I'm really passionate about sustainability, and the option came up to work with this vegan chocolate company and I just thought, you know, it seemed ideal — it seemed like an amazing opportunity to make my own chocolate bar.
"I love chocolate.
"I'd have it for breakfast, lunch and dinner, if I could. Wouldn't everyone?"
He said only 25 blocks of the chocolate were made, and he had already eaten four of them. The remainder were in storage for shelf-life testing.
The plan was for the chocolate to be commercially produced, and it was expected to hit selected supermarket shelves around the country about Christmas.
"And if it's popular enough, they'll increase production, so it can go to a wider market.
"It'll be really popular with vegan people because there's not a lot of chocolate options out there for vegans.
"Some vegan milk chocolate is not the nicest. Even dark chocolate's nicer than that.
"I think this chocolate is genuinely excellent, and I'm saying that as someone who is not a vegan."
Despite his major input, Mr Petherick would not receive a cent from sales of the chocolate. But that did not bother him in the least. Either way, it was a sweet deal, he said.
"I just feel so lucky because it's not often that you get to turn dreams into a reality like this.
"It was amazing. It doesn't happen that often.
"When I talk to people from the food science course that I'm currently doing at the university, I see that I'm getting to do things that they haven't been able to do, especially not as a high school student.
"There are third-year students and PhD students that I talk to, that think it's a really amazing thing."
As for his next chocolatey invention, he is remaining tight-lipped.

Uni launches bid to fund residency

Determined to get the prestigious Children's Writer in Residence fellowship back in place for 2027, the University of Otago has launched a major fundraising campaign. The residency is the only one of its kind in New Zealand and supports gifted writers to work fulltime on producing quality children's literature. The university aims to build an endowment fund to secure its future in perpetuity. Earlier this year, the university announced for the first time in 32 years, it was unable to offer the residency next year, following a major external funding cut. It has long been funded via grants from Creative New Zealand, but the college's latest application to the government agency was turned down. This year's resident, Samantha Montgomerie, said it was a "devastating" blow for children's writers. She said it provided a much-needed space to create a developed piece of writing, away from the hectic demands and distractions of her job as a teacher. It also acknowledged the importance of quality children's literature in creating a literary and literate nation. "It acknowledges that what New Zealand children's authors create matters — that our stories matter, that our tamariki seeing themselves in books matters. "All of this has a flow-on effect for literacy and the richness of our literary landscape. "Getting children reading, and fostering our creatives at the heart of what gets them reading, is what we value." University of Otago College of Education dean Prof Vivienne Anderson said the residency included a stipend in line with a six-month lecturing salary, along with an office at the College of Education and rent-free accommodation provided in the historic Robert Lord Cottage, in Titan St. The residency had supported 37 writers and illustrators to date, starting with Ruth Corrin in 1992. Other award-winning residents include Jack Lasenby (1995), Pauline Cartwright and David Hill (2003), Kyle Mewburn (2011), Leonie Agnew (2013), Robyn Belton (2015) and Heather McQuillan (2021). Prof Anderson said she was grateful for the funding previously received from Creative New Zealand, but it had been "disheartening" to lose the vital support for children's literature in New Zealand. The residency "has resulted in quality literature for children and promoted children's literature locally and nationally". "If you look at any children's section in a library or bookshop, or at the books children are reading in school, you will see previous residents' names feature prominently. "Our writers need to be supported to be able to produce quality children's literature. "We are committed to seeking alternative funding to be able to resume this important Children's Writer in Residence, and would be very grateful if you could help us get this unique and treasured residency back in place for 2027 and beyond."

Second big win for youth choir

A national choir, with a Dunedin singer in its ranks, has taken home the top award at an international competition. The New Zealand Youth Choir, with singers aged between 18 and 25, was named Choir of the World at the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod in Wales on Saturday night (local time). The choir blended waiata and kapa haka with a traditional choral repertoire. It comprised about 50 singers, including former Columba College and University of Otago student Rosie Auchinvole, and operates on a three-year membership. The award came hot on the heels of another win at the European Choir Games in Denmark last week, where the choir won the Grand Prix of Nations, after receiving a score of 97.5 from 100 in the folklore category. Labour arts, culture and heritage spokeswoman Rachel Boyack said the "outstanding young singers" were incredible ambassadors for New Zealand. "I watched their winning set this morning after waking up to hear this very exciting news," she said. "I've been lucky to see the choir perform this year, including at Waitangi on Waitangi Day, and it is incredible to see how much they've achieved — I am hugely proud of every one of them." Also on Saturday night, New Zealand Youth Choir conductor David Squire was awarded the Jayne Davies Conductors Prize. The New Zealand Youth Choir last won the Choir of the World title in 1999. — APL/RNZ
