Elon Musk's xAI will pay up to Rs 3.7 crore to software engineers who can make anime girl avatars
Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company xAI is making headlines again. This time, for posting a rather unusual job listing. The company is looking for software engineers who can help build interactive AI avatars that resemble anime characters, and it's willing to pay big money for it. According to the job post, selected candidates could earn between $180,000 to $440,000 (roughly Rs 1.5 crore to Rs 3.7 crore) per year, excluding additional benefits and listing, posted on xAI's careers page under the title Fullstack Engineer - Waifus', is related to a new experimental feature within the company's Grok AI platform, according to Business Insider. The word 'waifu' is often used by anime fans to describe fictional female characters they feel attached to romantically. And in this case, the name appears to be linked to one of the AI avatars launched on this week, xAI introduced two AI 'companions' on the iOS version of the Grok app—'Ani', a Japanese anime-inspired character dressed in a corset dress, and 'Rudi', a cartoon red panda with a split personality. Rudi's alternate version, 'Bad Rudi,' is designed to behave more aggressively, offering a contrasting experience to its default personality. A third character, described as a male anime figure, is also expected to be added to the platform soon. Interestingly, while Musk initially stated that these avatars would be available only to premium users subscribed to Super Grok, they currently appear to be accessible to all Grok users, even those without a paid job description calls for skilled engineers with a strong background in multimedia systems and product development. According to the listing, xAI is seeking talent capable of making real-time avatar interactions fast, scalable, and stable. The role is based in Palo Alto, California, placing it at the heart of Silicon the idea of anime-style AI avatars might seem light-hearted or experimental, xAI's move points towards a larger goal, building interactive AI companions that feel more personalised and emotionally engaging. However, the company has already faced some criticism for how far it's willing to push that indicate that Ani, the anime companion, can behave flirtatiously and even change into lingerie if a user continues to engage with her. Bad Rudi, on the other hand, has been found using foul language and insults when its aggressive mode is activated. These behaviours have raised eyebrows and sparked debate over how AI interactions are being designed, especially when emotional manipulation and suggestive content are controversy follows another recent issue faced by xAI. Earlier this month, Grok faced backlash after generating offensive and antisemitic responses. In one instance, the AI referred to itself as "MechaHitler", a term linked to a fictional video game character. The company later apologised and blamed the behaviour on deprecated code that made the AI susceptible to replicating inappropriate user content.- Ends

Social media calls it ‘cover-up' as Prada sends team to India to know more about Kolhapuri chappal
A team from Prada recently visited Kolhapur. The Italian fashion brand wanted to understand the history and craftsmanship of the famous Kolhapuri chappals. They met with local artisans and shopkeepers to learn how the traditional leather slippers were made. One shopkeeper shared that the Prada team had explored the biggest market in Kolhapur. They were especially interested in a leather bag used by conductors and petrol pump workers to store cash. 'They had come to see authentic leather bags and liked our Kolhapur, especially the Kapashi Kolhapuri chappal," One shopkeeper told ANI. Another vendor mentioned that the team had come to inspect manufacturing units. They observed the technical details of how these chappals were produced. "We offer authentic stitching and original quality Kolhapuri chappals," another vendor said. Last month, Prada faced strong backlash for allegedly copying the work of Indian artisans without giving them proper credit or payment. The popular fashion brand admitted that its latest summer collection had been inspired by the famous Kolhapuri chappals. However, those who raised the complaint say that Prada has still not offered a formal apology or any compensation to the affected artisans. Earlier in July, a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed in the Bombay High Court. It demanded that Prada pay damages to the artisans of Maharashtra. On July 16, the Bombay High Court dismissed the PIL. The bench, led by Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice Sandeep Marne, questioned the legal right of the five advocates who had filed the case. 'You are not the owner of this Kolhapuri chappal. What is your locus, and what is the public interest? Any person aggrieved can file a suit. What is the public interest in this?' the court asked. Social media users reacted to an ANI video of Prada's Kolhapur visit. One of them called it a 'coverup'. 'I hope they don't learn the formula, apply on their brand and earn millions. Just outsource it to them and let them earn too,' wrote another user. Another wrote, 'So social media abuse made them realise' while another remarked, 'It's screaming PR.' 'All Prada chappals should have GI tag indicating this product originates from KA and MH,' came from another. 'Let the Artisans benefit with collaboration. If Prada can keep the nomenclature of products as is, and share benefits with Artisans it's a win-win for both,' suggested another.
