Policy change must not be implemented hastily: Ellron

THE Sabah Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBSS) is actively implementing inclusive and transformative action plans to ensure the youth age transition policy from 15-40 years to a new range of 15-30 years, effective Jan 1, 2026, truly strengthens the youth movement. Its Minister Datuk Ellron Alfred Angin said this policy change must not be implemented hastily without taking into account the realities on the ground, especially in Sabah which has diverse community structures, various forms of youth organisations and differing levels of grassroots leadership readiness.

'In line with this objective, the Ministry is now working closely with the Sabah Youth Council to design and realise a legal framework specifically for the development of the State's young generation, namely the Sabah Youth Development Enactment. 'This enactment will become the main foundation for strengthening the governance of youth organisations, expanding recognition of activism and volunteerism, and providing breathing space for youth leaders to manage and build the strength of their organisations during this transition period. 'We want to ensure that the voice of Sabah youth continues to be heard, their potential continues to be nurtured and their struggle continues to be empowered within a clear, secure and forward-thinking framework,' he said.
Advertisement In addition, to empower youth in the State, the KBSS will continue to double its efforts with a comprehensive and responsive approach by implementing key initiatives. 'One of the main initiatives currently being implemented includes the Sabah Youth Entrepreneur Success Scheme (Syabas), where more than 2,500 youths have benefited in the form of financing, guidance and digital empowerment. 'Young entrepreneurs in Sabah are now not only trading at night markets or small stalls, but also active on e-commerce platforms, in modern agriculture and the digital creative economy,' he said. To ensure the sustainability and effectiveness of youth organisation operations across Sabah, the disbursement of the Youth Organisation Grant serves as a strategic form of support aimed at strengthening the capacity and capability of youth associations in implementing high-impact programmes and initiatives for the community. 'This grant is not just financial assistance, but it is recognition of the active role of youth organisations as catalysts for national development and the shaping of young people's identity. KOTA KINABALU: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's special announcement about a special package to ease the people's burden in face of the rising cost of living is an indication of the nation's strong economic fundamentals. Azalina tables motion to extend debate on Auditor-General's Report
KUALA LUMPUR: Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said (pic) tabled a motion in the Dewan Rakyat on Wednesday (July 23) to extend the debate on the Auditor-General's Report. This is to facilitate institutional checks and balances, she said, adding that the move is part of ongoing reforms to enhance the efficiency, transparency, and effectiveness of public entities. ALSO READ: Auditor-General's Report: Three UKM tenders worth over RM50mil did not follow SOP It is also to reinforce the government's push for stronger public sector governance and supporting the oversight of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), she added. "In line with the principles of transparency and accountability, the government has taken a significant step by not only tabling the report in this Honourable House but also allowing it to be openly debated. "This is a departure from previous administrations that only tabled the report without debate,' she said while tabling the motion, adding that since June 6, 2023, the report has been debated four times. Azalina said the Auditor-General's Report 2/2025 highlighted serious irregularities in three of the five audited programmes, potentially undermining their efficiency and intended impact. "To address these shortcomings and prevent recurrence, the report sets out 22 recommendations for the relevant ministries, departments, agencies and federal government-linked companies to act upon. Azalina further noted that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has stressed the need for all responsible ministers to thoroughly review every finding raised in the report, especially recurring issues that remain unresolved. – Bernama

Malaysia asserts sovereignty over ND6 and ND7 blocks in Sulawesi Sea
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia holds the position that Blocks ND6 and ND7 in the Sulawesi Sea, claimed by Indonesia as the 'Ambalat' block, are part of Malaysia's sovereign territory. According to a written reply posted on the Parliament portal, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, better known as Wisma Putra, stated that the stance was based on international law following the decision of the International Court of Justice in 2002. 'In this regard, the reference to 'Ambalat' for parts of the blocks is inaccurate and misleading. Therefore, the correct term for the area in question, in line with Malaysia's position, is the Sulawesi Sea,' the ministry said. The ministry was responding to a question from Datuk Jonathan Yasin (GRS-Ranau), who asked whether the consent of the Sabah Government would be sought before any agreement is made with the Indonesian Government regarding a proposed joint development approach for the Ambalat block, which reportedly lies partly within Sabah's maritime area. The ministry explained that during Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's official visit to Indonesia on June 27, both leaders issued a joint statement on the proposed joint development in the Sulawesi Sea. 'The joint proposal refers to a matter that is still in the early stages of consideration to explore the feasibility of such cooperation and has yet to be finalised. 'This represents initial efforts by both leaders to seek the best solution for both countries,' it stated. Wisma Putra said the Federal Government had always worked closely with the Sabah State Government during negotiations and discussions to resolve maritime boundary issues between Malaysia and Indonesia. It also said the Federal Government took seriously the views and stance of the state government in making any decision to ensure Malaysia's sovereignty, sovereign rights, and interests were protected. The ministry added that discussions on maritime boundaries were based on legal and technical principles, conducted in a careful and prudent manner. 'In this matter, the government continuously undertakes thorough and comprehensive assessments of any proposed solutions, including economic cooperation, in search of outcomes that are mutually beneficial for both parties,' it said. The Foreign Ministry also stressed that it closely collaborated with relevant stakeholders on matters relating to Malaysia's maritime boundaries through a whole-of-government approach and was committed to negotiations with neighbouring countries to reach mutually agreed solutions. - Bernama
