Sabah sports minister Ellron Angin denies role in mining graft scandal
Published on: Thursday, July 03, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 03, 2025 By: FMT Reporters Text Size: Sabah youth and sports minister Ellron Alfred Angin has denied receiving a RM530,000 bribe in the alleged mining scandal in the state. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA: Sabah youth and sports minister Ellron Alfred Angin has denied a news report alleging that he accepted a bribe of RM530,000 in connection with the alleged mining scandal in Sabah. Ellron said the accusations in the report by Malaysiakini are 'baseless slander driven by immature political motives to tarnish my reputation and integrity as an elected representative'. 'I have always upheld the principles of integrity, accountability and clean governance in line with the Sabah state government's commitment to combat corruption,' he said in a Facebook post. 'I have instructed my legal team to take firm action against any party spreading these false allegations.' The Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (STAR) deputy president's denial follows a rebuttal from party president Jeffrey Kitingan, who was also implicated in the Malaysiakini report, along with four other Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) leaders. On Monday, Sabah assistant industrial development and entrepreneurship minister Andi Suryady Bandy, and Sindumin assemblyman Dr Yusof Yacob were charged with receiving bribes related to mineral prospecting licence applications in the state. Yusof is also the chairman of Qhazanah Sabah Bhd, the state government's investment arm. Businessman Albert Wei was charged with bribing them. The alleged scandal was reported last year after a series of videos linking several Sabah assemblymen to it were leaked. The videos allegedly depicted discussions involving bribery and misconduct related to mineral exploration projects in the state. In February, MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki said the initial batch of videos lacked credibility as they had been heavily edited. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Sabah youth score below national average in Mental Health Index
Ellron (seated centre) gives thumbs up to the programme. KOTA KINABALU (July 2): Bumiputera youth in Sabah recorded a score of 71.04 in the Malaysian Youth Mental Health Index 2023 (MyMHI'23) — slightly below the national average of 71.91, according to Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Vice Chancellor, Datuk Dr Kasim Mansor. He said the findings were part of a comprehensive study conducted by the Institute for Youth Research Malaysia (IYRES) in collaboration with UNICEF Malaysia. 'These statistics offer valuable insights for policymakers and youth themselves, underscoring the importance of cultivating a healthy environment that supports mental wellbeing,' he said during his keynote address at the International Conference for Youths (YOURS 2025) held at Ming Garden on Wednesday. The event was attended by over 120 participants. Dr Kasim emphasised that a healthy environment includes physical, social and psychological conditions that promote overall wellness and reduce health risks. 'To achieve this, several key aspects must be addressed — improving infrastructure, expanding green spaces in urban areas, fostering supportive learning and social environments in schools, universities and workplaces, and enhancing ethno-cultural empathy,' he said. He also pointed out that tackling economic challenges, particularly youth unemployment and financial literacy, is crucial. 'According to IYRES data, Malaysia's youth unemployment rate in 2023 was approximately 11.7%, a slight increase from previous years,' he said, noting that this figure remains well above the national average. On financial literacy, Dr Kasim cited a study published in the Malaysian Journal of Youth Studies showing that only 15.3% of young employees had a high level of financial literacy, while 69.2% demonstrated a moderate level. 'Limited financial knowledge can lead to poor savings habits and weak financial management, increasing the risk of bankruptcy, which may in turn impact mental health,' he said. According to the Malaysian Department of Insolvency, 317 bankruptcy cases were recorded in 2024 among youth aged 30 and below. From January to March 2025 alone, 78 bankruptcy cases were reported, including 37 cases in Sabah. He said the main contributing factors to youth bankruptcy include personal loans, vehicle hire-purchase, credit card debt and business loans. 'In response, various financial awareness programmes and youth-oriented initiatives have been implemented to improve financial literacy and build socioeconomic resilience,' he said. One major initiative is the launch of the Youth Socioeconomic Empowerment Plan 2030, a strategic framework developed to guide the Youth and Sports Ministry, alongside government and non-governmental agencies, in uplifting youth welfare. 'A key target of this plan is to reduce the youth unemployment rate to 6.5%,' he said, adding that the plan also aims to improve youth quality of life by creating more job opportunities, enhancing skills, promoting digitalisation and sustainability, and strengthening financial literacy and credit management. Dr Kasim also addressed the opportunities and challenges of digital technology for today's youth. 'Digital technology has transformed the way young people communicate and express themselves. However, they must be responsible and resilient digital citizens,' he said. He warned that while the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) in education and workplaces may be beneficial, overdependence could lead to declining student quality. The event concluded with a closing address by Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ellron Alfred Angin.

Instilling humanitarian values among students
Published on: Sunday, June 29, 2025 Published on: Sun, Jun 29, 2025 By: Marutin Ansiung Text Size: Ellron in a group photo with the winning team. KENINGAU: The collaboration between the District Education Office and schools here in field of sports reflects the inclusive policy currently being pursued by the State government in line with the aspirations of Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ). Minister of Youth and Sports, Datuk Ellron Angin, said he wants to see the young generation today not only physically active and competitive but also have strong humanitarian values. 'Both sports and physical education are part of the same education system, though their approaches may differ. 'Sports are based on specific skills, while physical education focuses on the physical development and health of students,' said Ellron when officiating the 2025 Keningau District Schools Sports Council (MSSD) Under-12 Rugby Championship, held at the SK Kg Biah field. In this regard, Ellron expressed his pride in seeing how sports are being used as a platform for unity and character development. 'We are not just building physical strength, but also shaping identity, enhancing mental resilience, and instilling noble values such as discipline, teamwork, mutual respect, and sportsmanship regardless of background and ability,' he said. At the same time, Ellron affirmed his belief that every child has their own potential and unique talents. He said all that is needed is opportunity, and through such tournaments, a space has been created for all students to shine, compete healthily, and learn to collaborate. 'Success will follow with dedicated effort and persistent training,' he added. He also noted that each player has their own strengths, advantages, and unique traits but most importantly, they share a strong fighting spirit. 'Today, these players stand on the same field with one goal to chase success in sports. 'But remember, winning is not everything. What matters more is the courage to try, the spirit to keep challenging oneself, and the resilience not to give up easily,' he added, motivating the crowd. In any situation on the field, on the track, or in life, he urged them never to fear falling, because those who fall and rise again are the true winners. Ellron who is also Sook Assemblyman, concluded with hopes that the success of this year's rugby championship will continue, and that more such initiatives will be implemented across districts throughout the state of Sabah. Meanwhile, Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Ulu Senagang emerged as the cup champion of the 2025 Keningau District Schools Sports Council (MSSD) Under-12 Rugby Championship. The cup runner-up and third place were secured by Biah Attackers B and Kebulu Fighters, respectively. Meanwhile, the fourth place went to Kyubi Rugby Club. In other categories, Biah Attackers A clinched the plate champion title, followed by Cinnamon Titan as the plate runner-up, while Binaong Bison was crowned bowl champion. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? ‘More should be involved in remembering Double Six tragedy'
Remembering the fallen: Ellron (second from left) at the commemoration held at the crash site in Sembulan, Sabah. KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah government expects greater participation in next year's 50th anniversary of the Double Six tragedy, with plans to invite federal leaders and involve more students from schools and universities. Sabah Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ellron Alfred Angin said this would help deepen the public's understanding of the tragedy's historical significance. He said this was discussed with several leaders during the 49th anniversary commemoration held at the crash site in Sembulan yesterday, which included a wreath-laying ceremony and a poetry competition featuring 132 participants, a sign of continued public engagement with the legacy of the crash. 'This is to ensure that we continue to remember this tragedy and reaffirm the facts about Sabah's political history,' said Ellron. The Double Six tragedy, which occurred on June 6, 1976, claimed the life of then chief minister Tun Fuad Stephens and wiped out nearly half of Sabah's state Cabinet, marking a turning point in the state's political landscape. The other 10 victims were his eldest son Johari, Datuk Peter Mojuntin, Datuk Chong Thien Vun, Datuk Salleh Sulong, Datuk Darius Binion, Datuk Wahid Peter Andau, Dr Syed Hussein Wafa, Ishak Atan, Korp Said Mohammad and Gandhi J. Nathan. Although the official investigation report was declassified in 2023, questions and public scepticism about the cause of the crash persist. Meanwhile, NGO Sunduvan Sabah continues its efforts to have the tragedy included in Sabah's school syllabus as part of efforts to educate the younger generation. Its chairman Aloysius Danim Siap said the incident must be formally shared with younger generations of Sabahans. The group will present its proposal to the state education director and publish a book compiling verified historical records, personal testimonies and an analysis of the social and political impact of the crash. Meanwhile, the upcoming redevelopment of Prince Philip Park at Tanjung Aru could provide greater prominence to the Double Six tragedy. Tanjung Aru Eco-Development Sdn Bhd (TAED) chairman Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia said plans are in place to include a memorial replica of the ill-fated Nomad aircraft as part of the park's redevelopment. 'The idea is not to relocate the existing memorial in Sembulan, but to create an additional site of remembrance within the redeveloped Prince Philip Park,' he said after attending the 49th Double Six anniversary commemoration. 'We understand that some family members of the victims may feel uncomfortable about a replica being displayed as it could revive painful memories. I respect that and would like to meet them personally to explain our intentions. If they object, we are willing to adjust our plans,' he said. He stressed that the memorial is not meant to sensationalise the incident, but rather to honour the legacy of the leaders who perished. He estimated the cost of the Double Six memorial component to be between RM100,000 and RM200,000, forming a small part of the larger RM35mil park revitalisation. He also cited a recent talk he gave to an NGO in Peninsular Malaysia, where most of the attendees had never heard of the Double Six incident. 'This is why I support the idea of incorporating the Double Six tragedy and its historical context into the national school syllabus,' he said.
