ABC News to launch new show on Disney+
Published: Updated:
A pair of fresh-faced correspondents have been tapped to co-host a new daily streaming show for ABC News as the network faces stiff competition from its rivals. Rachel Scott and James Longman will co-anchor 'What You Need to Know' on Disney+, which debuts on July 21 and airs each weekday at 6 a.m. ET.
The show, which is the first original news show designed for the streaming service, arrives as networks attempt to recapture young consumers who have fled TV for streaming. Last week, ABC World News Tonight host David Muir, 51, was beaten by NBC News' new primetime host Tom Llamas in the key 25-54 demographic for the first time. An insider at the time told the Daily Mail that ABC execs were already unsettled by Llamas' impact during his first month as Nightly News host.
ABC's Good Morning America - while barely ahead of Today in total viewers - is trailing NBC in the advertiser-coveted group as well. The morning show is led by the network's other fixture, George Stephanopoulos, formerly ABC News' chief anchor, who now co-hosts GMA with Robin Roberts and Michael Strahan. He once was ABC News' chief anchor but is no longer. All three turned down a chance to host the television network's troubled afternoon edition of the morning show, known as GMA3, sources told Daily Mail in April.
The new Disney+ show boasts GMA3's old tagline as its title. 'It's the first thing you will see on Disney+ as you wake up,' ABC News president Almin Karamehmedovic told Variety on Monday, describing a more short-form format that combines breaking news, entertainment segments, and viral videos, Each episode will be available on demand for 24 hours before refreshing with a new episode.
'Americans have a lot going on in their lives. They want to stay up to speed on what's happening, not only here at home, but also internationally as well,' added Scott, a 32-year-old senior political correspondent for the network. 'And sometimes they don't have a lot of time to do it. And so, this is going to be just the platform for them to get up to speed on the top stories.'
Longman, the network's 39-year-old London-based chief international correspondent, added: 'I'm going to be able to do this wherever I go in the world. 'I could have been doing it from Iraq, when Israel attacked Iran. I could have been doing it for from Ukraine. 'So, this is a way to take the audience with us into the places we're going, yes, to tell them what's going on in the world in the United States, but also give them that a little bit of insight into what we're doing every single day.' Both will retain their regular roles while co-hosting the new show.
Disney+ currently airs live breaking news and replays of Good Morning America, Nightline, and World News Tonight. The new show will not air on ABC, the network confirmed, unlike the struggling GMA3, which has recently seen a revolving door of co-hosts following the abrupt exits of co-hosts Eva Pilgrim and DeMarco Morgan. On-air talents from other hours and elsewhere across the network have been asked to host the show more frequently in what a source described to the Daily Mail as an 'evolution of the show.'
In March, a network spokesperson told that Daily Mail that ABC News was in the process of ' unifying all day parts under the GMA umbrella and team.' ABC's next timeslot is held by The View, whose mainstay Whoopi Goldberg last week whined that her job can 'feel like hell' after returning from a two-week break following backlash over her controversial comments on Iran.
Muir, meanwhile, has been a primetime mainstay for 11 years, succeeding Diane Sawyer in 2014 when World News Tonight still trailed NBC in total viewers. Muir has held the primetime crown for the past nine years running. But three straight weeks of growth with total viewers under his rival, Llamas, have caught the attention of ABC News bosses, a source told the Daily Mail last week. 'There is a growing concern that Muir's once-apparent predecessor is already showing promising signs - and it's starting to reflect in the ratings,' the source said.

EXCLUSIVE Julian McMahon's death certificate reveals ominous details about star who died after mysterious cross-country trip to Scientology HQ city
Tragic TV heartthrob Julian McMahon was given a quiet, lonely send-off after his shocking death in Florida following a secret battle with cancer, can exclusively reveal. The Nip/Tuck star did not have a funeral, we can disclose – instead he was quietly cremated without ceremony in the beach city of Clearwater where he had mysteriously turned up with wife Kelly. McMahon's body was handled by Eternal Cremation Services in nearby Dunedin after his July 2 death in a nearby hospital, according to his death certificate obtained by A spokesperson for Eternal said it did not handle a funeral for the 56-year-old son of former Australian prime minister Sir William McMahon. When asked if there was any funeral, anywhere, for him, the spokesman replied emphatically: 'There was not.' And he could not confirm if McMahon's third-wife Kelly, 47, attended the cremation at Palm State Crematory. Tragic TV heartthrob Julian McMahon was given an apparently lonely send-off following his shock death in Florida after a secret cancer battle, can exclusively reveal The absence of a formal send-off for the beloved actor - known to millions as Dr. Christian Troy on Nip/Tuck and Cole Turner on Charmed - is only fueling speculation about the mysterious final months of his life His apparent move from California to Clearwater has already sparked frenzied online chatter because the Church of Scientology has its global headquarters there. The controversial and secretive religion has a host of celebrity followers, most famously Hollywood's Tom Cruise and John Travolta, and attracts showbiz types. Some 4,000 members live in Clearwater and its giant HQ, called Flag, dominates the downtown area. McMahon's successful 36-year career in his native country and in the United States from the early 1990s makes the lack of entertainment industry pals marking their respects even more puzzling. And while his father Sir William and mother Sonia have long passed away, his sisters Melinda, 58, and Debbie, 52, were reported to be devastated by his death at their homes in Australia. The actor died from lung metastasis – where cancer that started elsewhere in the body spreads to that organ – according to the Pinellas County cremation approval report obtained by It added this was a consequence of head and neck metastatic cancer. However, it did not reveal the type of cancer McMahon was originally battling. McMahon died as an inpatient at the Morton Plant Hospital, according to his death certificate. There will be no autopsy report, the medical examiner's office told us. Adding to the Clearwater connection mystery, the 'residence' address on the death is listed as a place in Ventura Boulevard, Encino, California. However, this is a building housing a showbiz accountancy firm and two other businesses. His occupation was given as 'producer/entertainment' and it revealed he had 'some college credit, but no degree'. The actor, previously wed to Australian singer Dannii Minogue and Baywatch star Brooke Burns, is not known to have had any connection with Clearwater before his death was revealed. He and former model Kelly previously had a stunning three-bedroom, four-bathroom pool home directly under the Hollywood sign which sold for $2.16million in 2015 and is now worth an estimated $3.4million. They're last known place in California is an equally beautiful spread in Somis, California, which the couple sold in August 2023 for $2.825million, according to records. The three-bedroom hacienda-style pool home sits on 15.5 acres in the heart of Ventura County's avocado region. The sales literature at the time said there would be farming income from 4.5 acres of Haas avocados and 10 acres of lemons. And possibly in a hint of the couple wanting a completely new lifestyle, it was advertised as being available furnished. Despite their 'out of the blue' appearance in Florida, there do not appear to be any property records linking them to the Clearwater area. When the city's connection to his death was revealed, the internet rumor mill went into overdrive. 'I live in Clearwater… close to a house John Travolta owner, because we're about a mile from the Scientology center in downtown Clearwater,' one local wrote on Instagram. 'I was wondering if Julian McMahon was a Scientologist since (Kelly's statement) said he died in Clearwater, because why else would he live the last few months of his life there? The only celebrities that do are usually Scientologists. Surprised, that's for certain!' Another person posed the question on X: 'Why was Julian McMahon in Clearwater when he died? Like, that's Scientology city.' Scientologists believe humans are 'immortal spiritual beings' called Thetans, who have many lives and possess unlimited potential through reincarnation. Scientologists are commonly cremated. While McMahon bravely continued his acting career, Kelly has been running a website called Super Spiritual Girl, describing herself as a 'spiritual concierge' on her Instagram. Her site says: 'We believe in spreading light and the power of collective consciousness. We welcome all souls on a path to healing, wellness and truth. Kindness, authenticity, integrity and honesty are our core values.' As creator and founder, she is described as having practiced and trained 'a wide range of spiritual modalities for the last 15 years' and is a 'shamanic healer'. Despite the fevered theories, Scientology expert and writer Tony Ortega damped down the speculation about the TV star. He told 'I haven't seen any evidence that McMahon was a Scientologist. 'Scientology dominates a small downtown part of Clearwater. But most people there don't do near it. Many people are drawn there to the beach, which has nothing to do with Scientology.' The religion and affiliated companies owns roughly 185 properties in the downtown area, which frequently has an eerie sense of quiet. Church figurehead and Hollywood megastar Cruise, 63, has a penthouse apartment at the Flag building where he reportedly has a private elevator that whisks him from parking lot to his living area. Travolta's wife Kelly Preston died after a breast cancer battle in 2020. Two years later Cheers actress and Scientologist Kirstie Alley died from colon cancer at the Clearwater mansion she bought from the late Lisa Marie Presley – who was also a follower of the religion. News of McMahon's death stunned his fans who had no idea he was secretly battling cancer. Kelly, who wed the star in at a Lake Tahoe ceremony in 2014, revealed in a statement: 'With an open heart, I wish to share to the world that my beloved husband, Julian McMahon died peacefully this week after a valiant effort to overcome cancer. 'Julian loved life. He loved his family. He loved his friends. He loved his work, and he loved his fans. His deepest wish was to bring joy to as many lives as possible. 'We ask for support during this time to allow our family to grieve in privacy. And we wish for all of those to whom Julian brought joy, to continue to find joy in live. We are grateful for the memories.' There were hindsight hints of the tragedy to come when McMahon was last seen publicly in March at the SXSW premiere of his psychological thriller movie The Surfer alongside co star Nicolas Cage in Texas. Although no one realized he was ill, the star appeared thinner and more fragile, dressed in a blue blazer that hung loosely.

BREAKING NEWS Caitlyn Jenner's pal Sophia Hutchins cause of death revealed after horrific accident in Malibu
Caitlyn Jenner 's late friend Sophia Hutchins died at the age of 29 in a horror ATV accident in Malibu. Hutchins' life was cut short on July 2 after she plunged 350 feet down a cliff on the vehicle after she was believed to have struck a car bumper. On Wednesday her cause of death was shared. A death certificate from the County of Los Angeles Department of Public Health, which was obtained by People, shows Hutchins died from 'multiple blunt force injuries.' The case remains open, but her manner of death has been 'ruled an accident.' The reality TV star will be laid to rest at the Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Los Angeles on July 24. Hutchins was featured heavily in the reality series, I Am Cait. The series ran for just two seasons but it gave glimpses into Jenner and Hutchins' unorthodox life together. Later Sophia became the CEO and director of the Caitlyn Jenner Foundation. Caitlyn Jenner 's late friend Sophia Hutchins died at the age of 29 in a horror ATV accident in Malibu. Hutchins was killed on July 2 after she plunged 350 feet down a cliff on the vehicle after she was believed to have struck a car bumper In 2017, Hutchins moved into Jenner's home and began working as the star's manager in 2015. Before that Kris Jenner managed Caitlyn. sources revealed that after striking the car's bumper, the impact forced the ATV and Hutchins ended up 'plummeting 350ft down into a ravine.' First responders pronounced Hutchins dead at the scene. Investigators told that she was believed to have been speeding in the 2013 Polaris ATV, and was 'side by side' a Mazda when she rear-ended the car. The impact caused the ATV to veer off the cliff off the winding mountainous road in Malibu. The two individuals in the car struck by Hutchins and the ATV were not injured. Hutchins was in Jenner's inner circle for over a decade after she came out as a transgender woman in 2015. The case remains open, but her manner of death has been ruled an accident; seen in 2019 Hutchins met Caitlyn that year and appeared in multiple episodes of the television documentary series I Am Cait, a spin-off of Keeping Up With The Kardashians. Despite living under one roof, Hutchins previously told The New York Times that they 'were never romantically involved', insisting it was all about work and friendship. 'Caitlyn is a parent to me. I have said that a million times. It is a parental, familial relationship,' Sophia said. In 2020, Sophia posed for an online ad campaign for Kim Kardashian's highly successful clothing line SKIMS. Sophia was particularly close to Kris Jenner, speaking to her regularly, and Hutchins also had a good relationship with Jenner's daughters Kendall, 29, and Kylie, 27. The siblings once gave Sophia a stunning heart-shaped diamond necklace for Christmas. 'I'm on good terms with all the family, but I'm closest with Kris, Kim, Kylie and Kendall', Sophia said. The tragedy comes nine years after Jenner was involved in a fatal car crash while driving on the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu. The collision involved four cars and resulted in the death of Kim Howe, 70. Jenner was not charged in the crash, but an investigation by the LA County Sheriff's Office determined that Caitlyn was driving too fast. That opened her up to blame in civil lawsuits, which was later settled out of court. Despite living under one roof, Hutchins previously told The New York Times that they 'were never romantically involved' with each other — a sentiment that pair have repeated over the years. 'I don't feel a need to address my sex life, quite frankly, unless I want to,' Sophia sternly told the outlet at the time.
