Android phones can detect earthquakes before they strike, say scientists
Available on Android devices in 98 countries, Google's earthquake alert system has now expanded to cover more than 2.5 billion people in just three years. Since the Android Earthquake Alert system works by gathering data from millions of Android devices, one might wonder if it actually works. As it turns out, crowdfunding data is a really good idea.
According to a recent study published in the journal Science, Google's Android Earthquake Alert system is so effective that it is on par with traditional seismic networks in terms of detecting earthquakes and issuing alerts.
In the study, researchers said that 'AEA demonstrates that globally distributed smartphones can be used to detect earthquakes and issue warnings at scale with effectiveness comparable to established national systems.' It goes on to say that while the accelerometers in smartphones are less sensitive than the equipment used in seismic networks, they are still capable of detecting ground motions.
The study goes on to say that around 70 per cent of the total smartphones in the world are powered by Android and that between 2021 and 2024, the Google AEA system detected an average of 312 earthquakes in 98 countries that had a magnitude between 1.9 and 7.8.
As it turns out, 85 per cent of users who received earthquake alerts also experienced sharing. Out of these, 36 per cent said they got an alert before the earthquake, while 28 per cent and 23 per cent of people said they received an alert during and after the shaking began. In the video below, the yellow dots indicate the number of smartphones nearby, while the red dot marks the epicentre.
The yellow circle is the P-wave's estimated location, and the red circle is for the S-wave, which is responsible for most of the damage. The animation shows how phones detected shaking as the 6.2 magnitude earthquake progressed in Turkey, causing damage and loss of life in the country.
In a blog post, Google explained that its Android Earthquake Alert system uses accelerometer sensors in smartphones to sense vibrations, which may or may not indicate if an earthquake is happening. If the system thinks an earthquake is imminent, it then sends a signal to the tech giant's earthquake detection server along with an approximate location of where the shaking was recorded.
The server then combines data from various smartphones in the vicinity to determine if an earthquake is actually happening. With more than 2 billion devices around the world acting as mini-earthquake detectors, Google says its system is the world's largest earthquake detection network.

Google Pixel 10 series: New colour options, design tweaks and more expected
Google may have accidentally revealed the entire upcoming Pixel 10 series. According to a report by Android Authority, a banner on the Google Play Store briefly showcased what appears to be the full Pixel 10 lineup before it was taken down. As per the report, the image displayed four models: Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, and Pixel 10 Pro Fold. Google Pixel 10 series: What to expect As per the report, the alleged banner of the Pixel 10 series showed all four models from the rear, revealing key design changes. Pixel 10 The standard Pixel 10 was reportedly shown in a new Indigo Blue colourway, with a design that largely resembles its predecessor. However, one key difference was in the horizontal rear camera module that now houses three camera sensors — up from the dual-camera setup seen on the Pixel 9. This aligns with previous reports suggesting that Google could add a telephoto lens to the base Pixel 10 model, possibly the same one used in the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. The Pixel 10 is expected to be powered by Google's next-generation Tensor G5 chip, like the rest of the series. Camera changes are also likely, with the primary sensor expected to match the one used on the Pixel 9a. That could represent a downgrade in resolution compared to the Pixel 9's main camera. Pixel 10 Pro Fold The Pixel 10 Pro Fold was reportedly shown in the same 'Moonstone' colour previously seen in Pixel 10 Pro teasers. This shade appears to be a mix of grey and blue tones. A separate report from 9to5Google also notes that the foldable may come in an additional Jade-and-Gold colour variant, with a green back and golden frame and camera module. While the design is expected to remain largely unchanged from its predecessor, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold could receive some internal changes. These may include a primary and ultra-wide camera setup borrowed from the Pixel 9a, a larger 6.4-inch cover display (up from 6.3 inches), a bigger 5,015mAh battery, and support for the Qi2 wireless charging standard. Pixel 10 Pro / Pixel 10 Pro XL Google has already previewed the Pixel 10 Pro's design in an earlier teaser. The overall design appears unchanged from last year but could be offered in new colours like 'Moonstone' and a Jade variant with gold accents — similar to the Fold model. The Pixel 10 Pro XL is expected to carry the same design as the Pro model, but in a larger form factor with a bigger display.

Faster Qi2 25W Wireless Charging Set to Power iPhones and Major Android Phones
Wireless charging is about to get a major upgrade for smartphone users. The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) has officially launched the Qi2 25W wireless charging standard, confirming that the first devices have already been certified, with 'several hundred' more expected soon. The big news is that the upgraded tech isn't just for iPhones—some 'major Android smartphones' will also adopt it for the first time. Previously, Qi2 wireless charging topped out at 15W, but brands like Anker, Ugreen, and Baseus have already secured early certifications for accessories that tap into the faster 25W capability. While the standard was known by its version number, Qi2.2, the WPC has now confirmed its official name: Qi2 25W. So, which devices will get the boost? The WPC says iPhones will support Qi2 25W, though it hasn't specified exact models. Currently, the iPhone 16 lineup supports 15W Qi2 speeds but achieves 25W through Apple's MagSafe system. Since Qi2's magnetic design builds on MagSafe technology, the iPhone 16 series could be upgraded, while the next-gen iPhone 17 models are likely to support the full standard out of the box. Android users also have reason to be hopeful. According to the WPC, 'major Android smartphones will join the Qi2 ecosystem for the first time with this launch.' So far, the only Android device to fully support Qi2 is the HMD Skyline. Some Samsung flagships, like the Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7, are 'Qi2 Ready' but lack the magnetic ring required for full-speed charging without a special case. Whether upcoming Android models will support the complete Qi2 25W standard or stick to Qi2 Ready remains to be seen. The WPC has yet to comment further. 'The momentum building behind the next stage in the evolution of the Qi standard is incredible,' said Fady Mishriki, chair of the WPC's board of directors. 'Consumers will be delighted when they experience Qi2 25W as it delivers nearly 70% more power than the original Qi2. The number of devices in the Qi2 25W certification queue for launch is unprecedented, as is the quality and breadth of our members' product designs.'
