‘Fantastic Four' Just Hit A Very Funny Rotten Tomatoes Milestone
The review embargo lifted for Fantastic Four: First Steps yesterday, which makes it one of the best-reviewed movies of the post-Endgame era. But looking outside that ranking list, Fantastic Four has achieved a rather hilarious milestone on Rotten Tomatoes.
It's well known that there have been many attempts at Fantastic Four movies in the past, but they were…bad. The original two Fantastic Four movies, 2005's FF and 2007's Rise of the Silver Surfer, were praised for their core cast, Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Michael Chiklis and a pre-MCU Chris Evans as Johnny Storm, but there was no real getting around the fact that they were not very good. Meanwhile, a more recent attempt, 2015's Fantastic Four, is one of the worst comic book movie disasters in the last decade. And that's including the likes of Morbius and Madame Web.
The milestone here is that with its current review score, Fantastic Four: First Steps has performed better than all three of the original Fantastic Four movies combined.

Add those up, and it's a 73% total to that 86%. I was curious what it might look like if First Steps got all their box office totals combined, which would be:
That's a total of $801 million. I mean, it's not impossible? Granted, the last few Marvel movies have hovered more around $400-500 million hauls, but A) this is reviewing really well and seems bound to be a fan-favorite, and B) unlike say, Thunderbolts or a non-Steve Rogers Captain America, these are some of the most recognizable Marvel characters there are.
My gut tells me that Fantastic Four probably won't hit $800 million in this current superhero climate. It should get close, but I'd be surprised if it crossed that, which would be almost double the most recent movies. Granted, we've seen things like Deadpool and Wolverine do over a billion recently, but I think you can understand the difference in terms of the history of both characters and their enduring appeal. The Fantastic Four may be fun and well-cast, but they're still brand new to the MCU. Early projects for opening weekend are in, and have increased after positive reviews, but we'll have to see how it performs over the long term.

Making movies is all about compromises. This actor is unavailable, so you cast someone else. That location is too expensive, so let's build a set. This shot is impossible, so let's think of something better. At every step, the big, huge mechanism of filmmaking is always a work in progress. But on Project Hail Mary, directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord tried to embrace a new philosophy. 'What's great about this movie is there are so many things that make it harder to make,' Miller said in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con. 'All of the zero G, all of the centrifugal gravity, the characters have to have a wall between them because their atmospheres are different. Everything that a regular movie would be like, 'Oh, we can change that,' we were like, 'Anything that makes it harder we're not going to change.' We're going to stay true to it, and then that difficulty is what makes it interesting and makes it special.' His co-director, Phil Lord, put it another way. 'We kept saying, with respect, this movie is not a Mac, it's a PC,' he said, to much laughter. 'The movie is a machine, the ship is a machine; it can be beautiful, it just can't be pretty.' It is true that almost everything about Project Hail Mary makes it seem incredibly difficult to make. Most of the movie is set on a spaceship. That spaceship meets an alien race represented by a creature made out of stone that doesn't speak English. Changing the setting or the character could've still conveyed the overall idea of the story, but it wouldn't be the story author Andy Weir wrote in his novel. So everything had to be right. So how did Lord and Miller bring that rock creature, nicknamed Rocky, to life? 'We called our friend Neil Scanlan at the Lucasfilm creature shop, and we tackled it together,' Miller said. 'We built a practical creature that was puppeteered by an amazing puppeteer named James Ortiz and a team of five, which we called the Rocketeers, and it was amazing having Rocky there on set every day so that we could have a real interaction and shoot the whole thing practically. Ultimately, it's going to end up being a beautiful blend of creature puppetry and animation, and he comes alive in a way that you would die for this character.' Sounds like it's beautiful, but maybe not pretty, just like a PC. Project Hail Mary, starring Ryan Gosling, opens in theaters on March 20. Want more io9 news? Beyoncé reunites Destiny's Child at final Cowboy Carter show
Destiny's Child have reunited for the first time in seven years for the grand finale of Beyoncé's Cowboy Carter tour in Las Vegas. The trio surprised fans with a medley of some of their best-loved songs, including Lose My Breath and Bootylicious. Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams also joined Beyoncé for a rendition of her 2022 hit, Energy. The chart-topping group went their separate ways in 2006, but have previously reunited during Beyoncé's half-time performance at the Super Bowl in 2013 and at her Coachella headline slot in 2018. After the show on Saturday, Beyoncé shared a photo of the trio, dressed in gold jumpsuits, on her Instagram without a caption. Fans were treated to several guest performances throughout the Vegas show, with Beyoncé bringing out her husband Jay-Z and country singer Shaboozey for brief cameos. Blue Ivy, Beyoncé's daughter, also made an appearance. The 13-year-old has been a fixture of her mother's shows throughout the tour. The performance in Las Vegas was the 32nd and final of her Cowboy Carter tour, which also saw her perform in her hometown of Houston, Texas in June. The three-hour rodeo extravaganza has been praised for its high energy and artistry. It takes its name from Beyoncé's 2024 album Cowboy Carter, which was met with critical acclaim, including taking the top album prize at this year's Grammy Awards. 'Fantastic Four' wins battle of heroes at N. America box office
"The Fantastic Four: First Steps," Disney's hotly anticipated reboot of the Marvel Comics superhero franchise, conquered the North American weekend box office, earning $118 million and sidelining "Superman," industry estimates showed Sunday. "Fantastic Four" -- starring actor-of-the-moment Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Emmy winner Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Joseph Quinn ("Stranger Things') -- tells the story of a team of heroes trying to save a retro-futuristic world from the evil Galactus. "This is an outstanding opening," said David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research. "'Fantastic Four' was a modest and struggling superhero series; it just caught up with the biggest and the best." "Superman," the latest big-budget action film featuring the iconic superhero from Warner Bros. and DC Studios, slipped to second place at $24.9 million, Exhibitor Relations said. That puts the global take of the film, starring David Corenswet as the Man of Steel, over the $500 million mark. "Jurassic World: Rebirth" -- the latest installment in the blockbuster dinosaur saga -- finished in third place at $13 million. Its worldwide total stands at $672.5 million. "The box office is on an excellent run that started two weeks ago," Gross said. "These are not the good old days, but 'Fantastic Four' and 'Superman' are performing extremely well. Superheroes are showing some swagger, and it's good news for the industry."
