
Persimmon and Pobl deliver affordable homes in Newport
The homes are part of the £1 billion Glan Llyn regeneration scheme and will help meet housing needs in the area.
Dimitri Batrouni, leader of Newport City Council, said: "It was a pleasure to meet once again with Persimmon and Pobl as they work together to bring new, high-quality homes to Newport to meet the rising demand for housing in the city.
"The council is determined to ensure we bring a range of homes into place to cater to the different housing requirements of people across Newport, and this is a great example of how this is being brought forward in the city."
The new homes include a mix of one-bedroom apartments and two- and three-bedroom houses, designed for individuals, couples, and families.
Lee Hawker, managing director of Persimmon Homes East Wales, said: "Persimmon is proud of the progress we've made at Glan Llyn, and are particularly happy with how we've worked with partners to deliver affordable housing here.
"We are very much committed to leaving a positive and lasting legacy wherever we build, meeting the housing need of the local area and making sure we deliver for Newport.
"So, I am delighted to be marking this handover of homes on-site."
The current phase of the Glan Llyn development will deliver 178 new homes, with 10 per cent designated as affordable housing under the Section 106 agreement.
An additional 8.5 per cent will be transferred to a housing association.
Nearly half of Persimmon's buyers at the site to date have used the Help to Buy Wales scheme, indicating strong demand from first-time buyers and local families.

West of England Hotel in Newport to be turned into flats
The West of England Hotel in Newport will have its upper floors converted into seven self-contained flats, including six one-bedroom units and one studio. The ground floor will be turned into a community facility. The plans, submitted by Mr F. David, were given conditional approval by Newport City Council on June 26. The Tree Officer and Landscape Architect have confirmed that important street trees will be protected under strict arboricultural supervision. Principal Heritage and Planning Officers have praised the scheme for safeguarding the historic character of the building. They said it would contribute positively to the setting of the nearby Grade II listed Transporter Bridge. Natural Resources Wales had no objections to the plans, as the development retains the current vulnerability classification and the upper floor residential units remain above flood risk levels. Typically, planning contributions are required under Section 106, but these have been waived following a viability assessment. The development is subject to conditions including detailed window design approvals, secure cycle storage provision, and the installation of electric vehicle charging points for 10 per cent of spaces. The works are expected to begin following final approvals under Building Regulations and Sustainable Drainage (SAB) if required.

Newport house in Rugby Road could be changed to HMO
Newport City Council has received a planning application proposing the change of use for 48 Rugby Road, Newport, NP19 0BR, from a single domestic residence to an HMO. The application was put forward by M. Hassan and is being handled by agent Ryan Brindley of Aspects of Design and Construction. As part of the proposal, a new rear single-storey extension and a single-storey garage are to be constructed. Both the extension and garage have already been partially built, as work began in June 2024. The planning form states that the property will maintain its original brickwork. The new extension and garage will use matching materials, and white uPVC windows and roller shutter doors will be installed. The property will not see an increase in residential units and will keep the same residential density. Britain's biggest housebuilders pay £100m over collusion claims
Seven of Britain's biggest housebuilders have offered to pay £100m towards affordable homes to avoid a decision by a watchdog on whether they breached competition laws. The developers have offered to pay the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) after it discovered evidence last year suggesting that 'commercially sensitive' information was being shared between the competitors. That information included pricing, property viewings and incentives offered to house buyers, such as kitchen upgrades and stamp duty contributions. If the CMA accepts the payment, it will drop its investigation without reaching a decision on whether there was any wrongdoing. The £100m would be channelled into funding pots for affordable homes in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and is the biggest payment that has been offered to the CMA to date. The builders – Barratt Redrow, Bellway, Berkeley Group, Bloor Homes, Persimmon, Taylor Wimpey and Vistry – have also agreed to legally binding commitments to work with the Home Builders Federation and Homes for Scotland to develop industry guidance on information sharing. Under the package, Barratt Redrow has agreed to pay £29m, while Taylor Wimpey would pay £15.8m and Persimmon £15.2m. Bellway has offered to contribute £13.5m, and Vistry would pay £12.8m. The CMA has begun a consultation on whether to accept the payment, a process ending on July 24. Anti-competitive behaviour crackdown Speaking on BBC Radio 4's Today programme, Sarah Cardell, chief executive of the CMA, said the payment would 'go to the people who need it the most'. 'We don't have to reach a conclusion in this case that there has been an infringement,' she said. When asked whether people had overpaid for a house because of housebuilders sharing data, Ms Cardell said that was the reason the CMA had secured the payment. She said: 'It will bring hundreds more affordable homes to the UK market immediately, which is a much better resolution than a long and complex investigation. 'We are committed to tackling anti-competitive behaviour and that is exactly what we are doing today because we have moved swiftly and effectively to resolve this case with absolute clarity. 'The housebuilders are in no doubt about what they need to do to comply with the law. 'People can be confident now when they go out and look at new houses today; tomorrow, they can be confident that there is no anti-competitive behaviour and we will see hundreds more affordable homes come to market.' The housebuilders offering the settlement said in individual statements that the settlement offer did not amount to an admission of wrongdoing and said they would continue to work with the CMA. Jennie Daly, chief executive of Taylor Wimpey, said the closure of the CMA's investigation 'will allow us to focus our efforts on delivering much-needed homes across the country '.
