Gulliver Prep's Nicolas Pineros is the Miami-Dade 3A-1A Boys' Soccer Player of the Year
Gulliver Prep relied on a standout individual performance to make it back to the state semifinals yet again this year.
Nicolas Pineros had 10 goals and 22 assists to get Gulliver to the state semis for the third straight year.
As a result, he is the Miami Herald's Miami-Dade County Boys' Soccer Player of the Year for Classes 3A-1A.
Pineros, the Miami-Dade County Boys' Soccer Player of the Year for Classes 3A-1A, was the latest offensive engine for Florida's premier program, handing out 22 assists to rank among the state's leaders in the category. The senior was also at his best near the end of the season, with five assists in his final six games.
The Raiders fell short of winning their third consecutive state championship with a loss to Delray Beach American Heritage in the Class 3A semifinals, but still finished the year among the most accomplished teams in all of South Florida.
'It's been normal for us to go up there and win with the teams we've had lately, but you don't always get what you want and the other team just wanted it more and had a little more dog in them,' Pineros said. 'Overall, the season was great. The memories and brotherhood we created was more than we could have asked for.'
Pineros, who has yet to sign with a college, had some of his most clutch performances in the postseason including a season-saving goal with a minute left in the regional semifinals to avoid losing to SLAM Miami. The tally sent the game to overtime and eventually penalty kicks where the Raiders prevailed and advanced.
'I had to learn how to take control and take charge of the team because the last few years that role fell to (former Gulliver standout) Cosme (Salas),' Pineros said. 'At the beginning I had to learn how to do that and learn a lot of valuable skills.'

Former Pro Bowl safety Jamal Adams is switching positions with Raiders
Safety seems like it's been a busy position for the Raiders this offseason. They gave Isaiah Pola-Mao a long term extension and their only free agent addition to sign more than a one-year deal was safety Jaremy Chinn, seemingly giving them two new starters to replace the losses of Tre'von Moehrig and Marcus Epps. Then the same day they added Chinn, they also signed Lonnie Johnson Jr. So, they seemed set. And yet just prior to the first day of camp they also added safety TJ Scott and former Pro Bowl safety Jamal Adams. Now, suddenly they were looking at a logjam at safety. But when Adams took the field, he was working with the linebackers instead. The 6-1, 213-pounder is trying to make a comeback after splitting last season between the Titans and the Lions' practice squad. And his former Seahawks head coach sees a change of positions is the best way to accomplish that. "I told him right off the bat, I want him to play inside," Carroll said of Adams. "He's always been so instinctive and so aggressive and such a run-through guy, been a fantastic blitzer over his time. So, I want to put him in position to do that. So, he's jumped right into the WILL spot, and that gives us some flexibility that we're going to grow with. He looks really good. He had a real serious injury a bit ago. He looks like he's back. Weighing a little bit more than he was before, he fit just right. I'm really anxious to see how he takes it." Linebacker has also been completely overhauled this offseason for the Raiders. Former starters Robert Spillane and Divine Deablo were allowed to leave in free agency. They then seemingly replaced them with former Steelers MLB Elandon Roberts and former Bucs OLB Devin White. Now both Roberts and White have some competition with the additions of Adams and former Bengals LB Germaine Pratt. Carroll has preached competition. He wasn't lying.

Dolphins agree to reported reworked deal with Minkah Fitzpatrick
Recently-acquired Miami safety Minkah Fitzpatrick secured a revised contract from the Dolphins. A day after reports surfaced that Fitzpatrick had enlisted the services of popular agent Drew Rosenhaus, the 28-year-old safety agreed to a revised contract with Miami that adds a $16.2 million signing bonus to his deal according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Fitzpatrick previously had no guaranteed money left on what is currently a two-year contract. Per Schefter, no additional years were added to his deal, but that appears to be an ongoing discussion between Fitzpatrick's camp and the Dolphins. "We are comfortable with this commitment to Minkah as we continue to work with the Dolphins on a multi year extension," Rosenhaus told Schefter and ESPN. Rosenhaus also represents Miami defensive tackle Zach Sieler, who is likewise seeking a new deal. The popular agent also represented former Dolphins tight end Jonnu Smith. According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, the revised contract moves up $2 million to Fitzpatrick this year, who is now due $17.5 million in 2025 and $15.6 million in 2026. It's a move that clears about $11 million in cap space for the Dolphins. Fitzpatrick is a three-time first-team All-Pro and a five-time Pro Bowler. In 2022, Fitzpatrick led the NFL in interceptions with six. During the 2019-22 seasons in Pittsburgh, Fitzpatrick registered 17 interceptions, 38 passes defended and 356 tackles. In 27 starts across the past two seasons, Fitzpatrick has recorded just the lone interception and seven passes defended. But, there is hope that Fitzpatrick can return in Miami to the form that saw him morph into the league's top safety during his time in Pittsburgh. League executives, coaches and scouts are still bullish on Fitzpatrick and indicated as much in an anonymous survey that ranked the NFL's top safeties this offseason.
