iPhone Battery Draining Fast? You Might Need to Undo These 3 Settings
Whether you're using your phone to get directions, stream music or send that one last text, the last thing you want is for it to shut down at the worst possible moment. Instead of scrambling for a charger or switching on Low Power Mode every few hours, take a minute to check your iPhone settings. Turning off a few power-draining features could be the fix your battery desperately needs-and it only takes seconds to do.
You can also keep an eye on your Battery Health menu -- it'll tell you your battery health percentage (80% or higher is considered good), as well as show you how many times you've cycled your battery and whether or not your battery is "normal."
We'll explain three iOS features that put a strain on your iPhone's battery to varying degrees, and show how you can turn them off to help preserve battery life. Here's what you need to know.
All the widgets on your lock screen force your apps to automatically run in the background, constantly fetching data to update the information the widgets display, like sports scores or the weather. Because these apps are constantly running in the background due to your widgets, that means they continuously drain power.
If you want to help preserve some battery on iOS 18, the best thing to do is simply avoid widgets on your lock screen (and home screen). The easiest way to do this is to switch to another lock screen profile: Press your finger down on your existing lock screen and then swipe around to choose one that doesn't have any widgets.
If you want to just remove the widgets from your existing lock screen, press down on your lock screen, hit Customize, choose the Lock Screen option, tap on the widget box and then hit the "—" button on each widget to remove them.
Your iPhone user interface has some fun, sleek animations. There's the fluid motion of opening and closing apps, and the burst of color that appears when you activate Siri with Apple Intelligence, just to name a couple. These visual tricks help bring the slab of metal and glass in your hand to life. Unfortunately, they can also reduce your phone's battery life.
If you want subtler animations across iOS, you can enable the Reduce Motion setting. To do this, go to Settings > Accessibility > Motion and toggle on Reduce Motion.
Surprisingly, the keyboard on the iPhone has never had the ability to vibrate as you type, an addition called "haptic feedback" that was added to iPhones with iOS 16. Instead of just hearing click-clack sounds, haptic feedback gives each key a vibration, providing a more immersive experience as you type. According to Apple, the very same feature may also affect battery life.
According to this Apple support page about the keyboard, haptic feedback "might affect the battery life of your iPhone." No specifics are given as to how much battery life the keyboard feature drains, but if you want to conserve battery, it's best to keep this feature disabled.
Fortunately, it is not enabled by default. If you've enabled it yourself, go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Keyboard Feedback and toggle off Haptic to turn off haptic feedback for your keyboard.

Lucid Air Goes 747 Miles on a Charge, Sets New Guinness World Record for EV Range
A new record for electric vehicle range on a single battery charge has been set, and it wasn't Tesla that secured the crown. Instead, California-based luxury startup Lucid now holds a Guinness World Record Holder for the longest journey by an electric car on a single charge, and the distance is genuinely impressive. Lucid managed to push its Air Grand Touring sedan to a distance of 747 miles in July, traveling between St. Moritz, Switzerland, and Munich, Germany. Previously, the record was set at 649 miles in June 2025 by a Mercedes-Benz EQS 450+ between two Japanese cities. This new record by Lucid is especially impressive considering the route between St. Moritz and Munich includes mountain passes, secondary roads, and highway driving. "This range record represents a significant milestone – it's yet another clear demonstration of the technological edge that defines Lucid," Eric Bach, senior vice president of product and chief engineer at Lucid, said in a statement. "Our Lucid products combine world-class vehicle efficiency with the most advanced drive units, ultra-high voltage architecture, and battery management technology available today." Now, the standard Lucid Air Grand Touring sports an EPA range of 516 miles, meaning this Guinness World Record was accomplished with unusual tactics of some sort. Lucid turned to Umit Sabanci, a London-based entrepreneur with the Guinness title of most countries visited on a single charge in a production battery electric vehicle, for consultation on how to stretch its luxury liner's capabilities. Sabanci's experience with traversing nine countries on a single charge in a Lucid Air Grand Touring seems to have brought driving insights and efficiency tactics, but it remains unclear if the Lucid Air Grand Touring used was tweaked in any way for this latest trip. "When I completed the nine-country journey in 2024, it was just the beginning," said Sabanci. "This new achievement takes that journey even further. I'm proud to be part of a movement that proves electric mobility isn't just the future; it's already redefining what's possible today." Driving 749 miles without stopping generally takes at least 12 hours, a feat that we're physiologically impressed by to say the least. That distance does give you a wide range of city-to-city connections in the continental U.S. A single charge and some judicious use of the right pedal could ferry you between New York City and a Waffle House in Columbia, South Carolina in an Air Grand Touring. Similarly, it's just about the driving distance between San Diego and California's border with Oregon. As a product reviewer for CNET, I've tested dozens of smartwatches to help readers figure out which are the best ones to buy and which aren't worth the money. Every time I'm done with a review, I like to go bare-wristed for a few days to give myself a break. However, I noticed something unexpected after wrapping up my review of the Apple Watch Series 10: For the first time ever, I didn't want to take the gadget off. I've always been on the lookout for a hybrid watch that strikes the right balance between a traditional wristwatch and a smartwatch. Plenty of wearables over the years have promised just that, like the Withings Scanwatch range. The Series 10, which tops our list of the best smartwatches for 2025, strikes the ideal balance for me because it doesn't compromise on connectivity, fitness tracking features or the overall look. That's because of the LTPO 3 technology that lets the screen refresh at 1Hz and gives the Series 10 a ticking second hand on a few watch faces, even when the display isn't actively being used. It makes Apple's device feel like a regular watch when I'm not actively using it, which is different from any other smartwatch I've tested. I like being able to change up the look by switching between the Reflections watch face, with its sweeping "analog" second hand, and Activity Digital, with its digital seconds counter. I wish there were more watch faces that supported this ticking second hand. There is Flux, but I've found myself siding with Redditors who think it's kind of goofy. (If you've found a color combination that makes it feel less comical, let me know!) The ticking second hand isn't just an aesthetic choice, or for the times when I'm anxiously checking to make sure I'm not too early for my next meeting. It's also practical for folks in different professions, like health care workers who need to have a second hand even after the display times out. More than the ticking second hand, it's the display itself I was skeptical that the Series 10's wide-angle OLED display would make that much difference to the viewing experience. Apple says it's up to 40% brighter than earlier watch displays when you're looking at it off-axis. So of course I had to compare it to every other Apple Watch in my review cabinet, including the Series 9. When using my eyes alone I'm not able to quantify how much brighter it appears as a percentage, there's no question the Series 10 is easier to see and looks brighter than other Apple Watch models with the same watch face. The Series 10 doesn't have the same battery life or rugged construction, but I miss its display when I have to switch to the $799 Apple Watch Ultra 2. There's almost every health and fitness tracking feature I could want, from a range of cycling tools to sleep apnea notifications, which is part of the reason this watch tops our list of the best smartwatches for 2025. Then there's WatchOS 11, which brings helpful safety tools like Check In to my wrist, so I no longer have to manually send the "I'm home!" message to friends and family. If only it worked with recipients who don't use iMessage: I truly hope Apple will add compatibility for RCS messaging for this indispensable safety tool, just like FaceTime works on Android through a web link. I now understand what people mean when they say they feel naked when they leave their house without their phones. Except for me, it's a watch.
