Two UNC baseball starters named finalists for top defensive award Can two UNC baseball star add a little hardware to their trophy cases?
The UNC baseball team found itself one win away from a second-consecutive trip to the College World Series, but after a 4-3 loss in Game 3 of the Chapel Hill Super Regional, watched its season come to a heartbreaking end.
North Carolina dominated Arizona in Game 1, 18-2 , then struggled on the mound in a 10-8 Game 2 defeat. Despite the Diamond Heels taking a late lead in Game 3, their bats disappeared ahead of a potential ninth-inning rally.
A major part of UNC's success throughout the Chapel Hill Super Regional came from two program veterans: starting catcher Luke Stevenson and starting shortstop Alex Madera. Stevenson mashed two hits – including a home run – and drove in four runners during a Game 1 domination. Madera hit 4-of-13 during the Supers, including a 2-RBI performance in Game 1 and 2-hit outing in Game 2.
Though Stevenson and Madera's hitting abilities garner most of their attention, their defense is amongst college baseball's best. On June 16, Stevenson and Madera earned finalist nominations for the ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove awards.
The collegiate Gold Glove award, just like in the MLB, is presented annually to the top defensive players at each position.
Stevenson and Madera will discover if they're winners on Wednesday, June 18. The Diamond Heels are just one of two teams, along with UCLA (first baseman Mulivai Levu, shortstop Roch Cholowsky), to have multiple finalists.
Stevenson compiled a .996 fielding percentage, committed just four errors and recorded 987 putouts over his first two seasons in Chapel Hill. If Stevenson forgoes July's MLB Draft and returns to North Carolina for his junior season, he'll have a chance to further improve upon those numbers.
Madera, who transferred into UNC from Divison-III Arcadia University before the 2024 season, became a mainstay in the middle infield. Starting primarily at shortstop this season and at second base last year, Madera recorded a .982 fielding percentage (eight errors), 281 assists and 149 putouts across his Diamond Heels career.

Fox Sports CFB analyst confident in UNC's chances ahead of 2025 season

There's plenty to be excited about this fall for the UNC football program, which begins a new chapter on Monday, September 1 at 8 p.m. against TCU. North Carolina stole college football headlines in December 2024, hiring 8-time Super Bowl champion Bill Belichick to be its next head coach. The Tar Heels will play new starters across the board, particularly on the defensive line and possibly quarterback. With all the mystery and potential in Chapel Hill, the excitement for college football at UNC is valid. In Fox Sports lead CFB analyst Joel Klatt's College Football Stock Watch, Klatt is "buying" stock in North Carolina. "I landed on the Tar Heels for two reasons: trust and schedule," Klatt said. "This team went under .500 a year ago, and it has a lot of transfers, so it's tough to project how this roster is going to do. "I don't think Belichick cares about all the noise surrounding him and the program as of late. I think he cares about just getting his players to do their jobs. If they can do that in that conference against that schedule, no one is running away from the Tar Heels. I think Belichick has a good chance of convincing his roster to not only do their jobs, but to also find ways not to beat themselves." Depending on how you evaluate the Tar Heels' 2025 opponents, their schedule is pretty favorable. UNC plays Charlotte and Richmond in consecutive weeks. North Carolina faces two more tough teams in UCF and Clemson, sandwiched around a bye week, but also the likes of California, Virginia, Stanford and Wake Forest. Syracuse, Duke and NC State will all prove to be good challenges for the Tar Heels, with their season finale in Raleigh carrying more implications than just a win. Where does UNC quarterback Gio Lopez land in On3 Sports' 2025 ACC QB rankings?

Don't be shocked if you barely recognize anyone on UNC's football roster this coming season. North Carolina replaced its entire defensive line through the transfer portal, plus added a few key skill players via the same route. Arguably the Tar Heels' most impactful addition is South Alabama transfer Gio Lopez, who'll compete with Max Johnson for their starting quarterback opening. Lopez thrived last year for the Jaguars: 2,559 passing yards, 18 passing touchdowns, 465 rushing yards and seven more scores, but he'll make the leap to a Power Four program this season. The ACC is deep with quarterbacks in 2025 – and Lopez is highly-valued amongst that list. In On3Sports' ranking of the Top 10 ACC quarterbacks, Lopez slots in at seventh. "Bill Belichick's biggest free agent acquisition of the offseason is an exciting lefty, who also drew attention from SEC schools, when he decided this spring to leave South Alabama," Andy Staples wrote. "But those schools intended to develop Lopez as a potential 2026 starter, and North Carolina wanted him to take over right away." Eli Holstein, who slots in just behind Lopez, threaded UNC's defense in Chapel Hill last year. CJ Bailey, just one spot ahead of Lopez, helped NC State continue its long winning streak against North Carolina in 2024. Cade Klubnik should be the ACC's top quarterback – and one of the country's best. Darian Mensah transferred in from Tulane, Carson Beck played last year at Georgia, Kevin Jennings led SMU to its first-ever College Football Playoff appearance in 2024, plus Haynes King returns for his sixth college football season. Johnson broke his leg in the Tar Heels' 2024 opener at Minnesota, paving the way for Conner Harrell to start. Jacolby Criswell shined and helped overcome Harrell's ineffectiveness, but Criswell is now at ETSU and Harrell at Charlotte. Lopez is all but guaranteed to start during Bill Belichick's first year as a college football coach. We'll see who Chapel Bill decides on as we quickly approach Week 1. Schedule information for UNC football at 2025 ACC Kickoff

The start of college football season is about to get a lot closer for UNC on Thursday, as Bill Belichick and four of his players will be in Charlotte, N.C. for the ACC Kickoff Event. There's no set definition of what the ACC Kickoff is, but it's essentially the public's first chance to watch ACC football programs speak before the upcoming season. North Carolina will be one of the last teams to take the stage in Charlotte, along with in-state rivals Duke and NC State, with the latter closing out television coverage. There should be plenty of questions for the Tar Heels, none more important than the offseason decision to hire Belichick as head coach. UNC rebuilt seemingly its entire roster through the transfer portal, particularly on defense, with Marcus Allen and Kaleb Cost amongst the very few, returning projected starters. North Carolina will be the fifth team to hold its press conference on Thursday. Boston College starts the day, followed by Virginia Tech and Clemson. The Blue Devils take the stage, then it's the Tar Heels turn. What is the ACC Kickoff? The ACC Kickoff is an annual football event held in Charlotte. It spans three days and includes extensive media coverage, including live interviews with players and coaches. What time will UNC appear at the 2025 ACC Kickoff? UNC is scheduled to take the podium on Thursday afternoon, between 2-2:30 p.m. Depending on how long each previous team runs, the Tar Heels could speak later in the afternoon – or for a longer period of time. How can you watch UNC at the ACC Kickoff? If you want to watch Belichick and North Carolina's player representatives, you can tune into the ACC Network at 2 p.m. ET on Thursday afternoon. If you're interested in watching the whole event, Boston College will speak first at 10 a.m. ET. Who will be representing the Tar Heels at ACC Kickoff? Belichick will be present, but which UNC players will be part of the action in Charlotte? Scheduled to attend the ACC Kickoff are wide receiver Jordan Shipp (pictured above), quarterback Gio Lopez (South Alabama transfer), plus defensive backs Thaddeus Dixon (Washington) and returner Will Hardy.
