Two UNC baseball starters named finalists for top defensive award
The UNC baseball team found itself one win away from a second-consecutive trip to the College World Series, but after a 4-3 loss in Game 3 of the Chapel Hill Super Regional, watched its season come to a heartbreaking end.
North Carolina dominated Arizona in Game 1, 18-2 , then struggled on the mound in a 10-8 Game 2 defeat. Despite the Diamond Heels taking a late lead in Game 3, their bats disappeared ahead of a potential ninth-inning rally.
A major part of UNC's success throughout the Chapel Hill Super Regional came from two program veterans: starting catcher Luke Stevenson and starting shortstop Alex Madera. Stevenson mashed two hits – including a home run – and drove in four runners during a Game 1 domination. Madera hit 4-of-13 during the Supers, including a 2-RBI performance in Game 1 and 2-hit outing in Game 2.
Though Stevenson and Madera's hitting abilities garner most of their attention, their defense is amongst college baseball's best. On June 16, Stevenson and Madera earned finalist nominations for the ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove awards.
The collegiate Gold Glove award, just like in the MLB, is presented annually to the top defensive players at each position.
Stevenson and Madera will discover if they're winners on Wednesday, June 18. The Diamond Heels are just one of two teams, along with UCLA (first baseman Mulivai Levu, shortstop Roch Cholowsky), to have multiple finalists.
Stevenson compiled a .996 fielding percentage, committed just four errors and recorded 987 putouts over his first two seasons in Chapel Hill. If Stevenson forgoes July's MLB Draft and returns to North Carolina for his junior season, he'll have a chance to further improve upon those numbers.
Madera, who transferred into UNC from Divison-III Arcadia University before the 2024 season, became a mainstay in the middle infield. Starting primarily at shortstop this season and at second base last year, Madera recorded a .982 fielding percentage (eight errors), 281 assists and 149 putouts across his Diamond Heels career.

Young leads at weather-hit PGA Wyndham Championship
American Cameron Young had a one-shot lead with three holes remaining when play was suspended Friday in the weather-hit PGA Tour Wyndham Championship in North Carolina. Young had seven birdies without a bogey through 15 holes and was 14-under for the tournament, one stroke in front of defending champion Aaron Rai of England, who was 13-under with five holes to play. Rai, who had to play a marathon Sunday on the way to victory last year after delays earlier in the week, said he hoped the tournament would get back on schedule quickly when play resumes on Saturday. Thunderstorms had halted play for a second time on Friday afternoon when organizers opted to halt it for the day. "Sometimes it's a nice way just to reset and refresh and go into tomorrow with a new mindset," Rai said. "And obviously there's a positive of just keeping the momentum going if the delay doesn't happen, but you've got to make the best of whatever situation comes your way, really." Mac Meissner and South Korean Im Sung-jae were the leaders in the clubhouse on 12-under 128. Meissner had eight birdies in his seven-under 63 and Im had an eagle and four birdies in his six-under 64. The tournament is the last regular-season event before the FedEx Cup playoffs begin with the St. Jude Championship next week. The top 70 in the FedEx Cup standings advance to the playoffs. bb/js

UNC football flips 4-star class of 2026 recruit from SEC program
The Tar Heels earned a major football recruiting victory on Friday afternoon. The North Carolina Tar Heels, exactly a month away from the start of their highly-anticipated 2025 football season, continue to make positive impacts in their 2026 recruiting class. This time, UNC's latest addition involves stealing a talented recruit from a regional SEC program. On Friday afternoon, class of 2026 tight end Carson Sneed flipped his commitment from Tennessee to North Carolina. Sneed's flip now gives the Tar Heels 35 commitments in their next recruiting class, which ranks nationally and continues to grow. The 247Sports Composite rankings tab Sneed, a 4-star recruit, the 13th-ranked player from Tennessee, 18th-ranked tight end overall and 404th player nationally. Sneed is following in the footsteps of his older brother, Dayton, who transferred to North Carolina in April – from the Volunteers. UNC currently lacks a true number one tight end on its roster, but former Texas A&M transfer Jake Johnson is poised to be the top 2025 guy in Chapel Hill. Outside of Johnson, collegiate experience drops off, but Arkansas transfer Shamar Easter was amongst the 2023 recruiting class' top-ranked players. Currently a 2-way player at Donelson Christian Academy in Nashville, Sneed is coming off a junior season in which he caught 33 passes, adding 409 yards and six touchdowns. On defense, Sneed recorded 44 tackles, 10 TFLs, three sacks and an interception. With Bill Belichick now leading the Tar Heels, recruits want to play in Chapel Hill. Fans to return to Bank of America Stadium for Panthers Fan Fest
Fans will pack into Bank of America Stadium in Uptown on Saturday to get their first glimpse of this year's Carolina Panthers team on the field. Carolina Panthers Fan Fest: Open practice, entertainment, and community support Carolina Panthers Fan Fest will be the first opportunity to see the players practice. The biggest news was when head coach Dave Canales said he's playing Bryce Young and the rest of the starters for at least the first two preseason games. This is a big change from last year. The Panthers starters did not play until the final preseason game in Canales' first season. The coach went on to say those reps in-game, even prep the night before, are just too valuable to pass up. Meanwhile, Channel 9 has watched the team the past two weeks. The offense and defense have been back and forth on who won the day. The nod goes to defense with multiple turnovers and Canales even described them as dominant. From here, the focus turns to Fan Fest. Outside of the pandemic, this is the first time in years fans haven't been allowed at training camp. 'Just that gratification of making a play and hearing the fans, making a tackle,' Canales said. 'Making a nice catch or a big run. The successes that come with that and being able to feed off the energy of the fans.' 'Obviously this being my first time to make a first impression to the fans over here,' said wide receiver, Tetairoa McMillan. 'Being able to showcase my talents in front of everybody. At the end of the day, they pay me to make plays. I'm going to try to make plays as much as I possibly can.' Canales said they'll be out here in full pads for Fan Fest.
