High Court seeks compliance report on school security after Badlapur assault case
The bench directed the state government to submit data on every school in Maharashtra within six weeks, indicating whether they have complied with the GR.The GR mandates enhanced CCTV surveillance at classroom entrances, corridors, main entry and exit points, playgrounds, and areas outside toilets. It also calls for improved counselling support, better handling of child abuse cases, and increased collaboration between schools, parents, and relevant authorities. The bench said, 'Check if the CCTVs are there. Sometimes they are installed but not functioning. All of that has to be checked. Every four to six months, call for a report and depute education officers to conduct surprise inspections. This should not be limited to Mumbai but extended to other parts of the state as well.'advertisementSchools are also required to install physical complaint boxes as part of a broader initiative to strengthen child safety and ensure compliance with the Pocso Act. The court directed the state to ensure that these boxes are opened regularly and that no laxity is shown in addressing any complaints received. The bench further stressed that every parents' group in schools across the state must be informed about the GR so they can carry out independent checks.'We want regular monitoring and detailed data, with charts for each school showing the extent of compliance,' the bench said. The Maharashtra government has been asked to submit the compliance data on August 5, when the matter will be heard next.- Ends

Man arrested for sexual harassment of minor girl in Mumbai local train
Navi Mumbai: A 21-year-old man was arrested by Vashi GRP for allegedly sexually harassing a 17-year-old girl in the Panvel-CSMT bound train on Tuesday night. Kiran Undre, senior inspector of Vashi GRP, said that the arrested accused was identified as Indrajit Mukhiya, who works at a sweet confectionery in Kharghar. Acting on a complaint by the victim, the accused Mukhiya was booked under relevant sections of Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita and the Pocso Act . On Tuesday, the complainant, accompanied by her male friend, boarded the train at Kharghar after visiting their friend and was returning to her residence in Vashi. They were travelling in the general compartment. When the train reached Juinagar station at around 9.20 pm, the accused allegedly deliberately fell on her despite the compartment not being crowded and allegedly touched her lower back. The girl felt offended and confronted him. As the train halted, the accused Mukhiya jumped onto the platform and attempted to escape. ‘Picture abhi baaki hai': Nitesh Rane slams Aaditya Thackeray over ‘chose silence' remark in Disha Salian death case
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aadtiya Thackeray on Thursday refused to comment after police told the Bombay High Court that there was no foul play in celebrity manager Disha Salian's death and that it was a suicide. Thackeray, who has been targeted by the opposition in the Disha Salian death case after her father Satish Salian sought an FIR to be filed against the Sena leader, said he has chosen silence despite attempts to defame him, ANI reported. On Thursday, when reporters asked Thackeray on the Vidhan Bhavan premises about the police affidavit about no foul play in the death case, he said, "For the last five years, certain individuals have tried to tarnish my image. I never responded to them at that time and I will not respond now either." Responding to Thackeray's comments, Fisheries and Port Development Minister Nitesh Rane, however, said Salian will get justice as "picture abhi baaki hai" (the film is not over yet). The ANI report quoted Rane as saying, "The news being reported is based on the SIT affidavit dated June 17. However, Disha Salian's father has since filed another affidavit challenging it. So, the case is not over yet." Using a popular film dialogue, the BJP leader said, "Picture abhi baaki Salian will get justice." Salian died on June 8, 2020, after falling off the 14th floor of a residential building in Malad area of Mumbai. The city police had then registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR). The Mumbai Police on Thursday told the Bombay High Court that former celebrity manager Disha Salian had committed suicide and no foul play was found in her death, even as her father Satish Salian reiterated she was gangraped and murdered. According to a PTI report, the police said in its affidavit that Disha had jumped off the window of a flat of her own volition, and the postmortem report mentioned no signs of sexual and/or physical assault on her body. The affidavit was filed before the high court last month. She was under tremendous mental stress due to a dispute with her family and also because her business deals were not working out, the affidavit added. The report also said that she was drunk at the time of the incident. Foul play was ruled out by her fiancé, who was with her at the time of the incident. Disha Salian's father, Satish Salian, filed a petition in the High Court in March this year, seeking a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into his daughter's death and an FIR against Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray. In the plea, he claimed his daughter was found dead under mysterious circumstances in June 2020. He alleged that she was raped and murdered and subsequently there was a politically orchestrated cover-up to protect certain influential persons. The petition came up for hearing on Wednesday before a bench headed by Justice AS Gadkari, which posted it for further hearing on July 16. (With inputs from agencies)

Kerala HC dismisses petition filed by teacher charged under POCSO Act
Stating that an acquittal in a criminal case does not automatically lead to the setting aside of a departmental inquiry and the consequential proceedings, the Kerala High Court on Thursday dismissed a petition filed by a schoolteacher who was charged under the POCSO Act for alleged sexual assault of a 10-year-old student in classroom. The petitioner who was an Arabic teacher at a school in Malappuram and was placed under suspension following the registration of the FIR over a year ago, approached the court, seeking that a departmental inquiry report and the consequential proceedings following the incident be set aside. Among other reasons, he said that he had been acquitted in the criminal trial, after the survivor and her mother 'turned hostile'. 'Benefit of doubt' Referring to the ancient education system in India where teachers were known as 'rishis', and the 'rishi ashram' was a veritable 'gurukul' where students were loved and cared for as members of the guru's family, the Bench of Justice D.K. Singh said the petitioner was acquitted in the criminal case on the benefit of doubt. Even if a person is acquitted in a criminal trial, the same would not necessarily lead to discharge in a domestic inquiry. Being her teacher, the petitioner had a fiduciary relationship with the survivor. The crime is grossly unbecoming of a schooteacher. The petitioner teacher was accused of sexually assaulting the student since January 2023 while she was reading standing near the petitioner in the classroom. The Wandoor police filed an FIR in 2024, under provisions of the POCSO Act and the IPC after being alerted by the headmaster. The child had told her mother about the assault and she informed the headmaster.
