Writers call for appointment of administrator to Kannada Sahitya Parishat

The Hindu20-06-2025

Prominent Kannada writer S.G. Siddaramaiah demanded that the State government immediately appoint an administrator to the Kannada Sahitya Parishat (KSP), citing financial irregularities and an authoritarian style of functioning by its president, Mahesh Joshi.
Addressing a press conference organised by the Kannada Naadu Nudi Jagruti Samiti at the Patrika Bhavan in Ballari on Friday, Mr. Siddaramaiah expressed deep concern for the Kannada literary institution under Mr. Joshi.
'Since Mr. Joshi assumed office, the autonomous character of the parishat has been undermined. Instead of promoting a healthy cultural atmosphere, he has created a climate of hostility, mismanagement, and repression,' he said.
He accused the president of failing to maintain transparency by not disclosing financial statements related to the Kannada Sahitya Sammelans held in Haveri and Mandya that were funded by taxpayers' money.
'Mr. Joshi has taken a unilateral and arbitrary approach and even attempted to alter the Parishat's bylaws. Literary conventions should serve as platforms for art, literature and culture not for political propaganda,' Siddaramaiah said.
Welcoming the upcoming 88th Kannada Sahitya Sammelan in Ballari, he urged that the event must avoid unnecessary expenditure.
'There are clear signs of financial mismanagement under Mr. Joshi's leadership. The government should intervene, appoint an administrator, and conduct a thorough audit. If irregularities are confirmed, he must be removed from the post; if not, appropriate measures may be taken to continue his tenure,' he said.
Jayaprakash Gowda, president of the Karnataka Sangha, Mandya, clarified that the protest was not against the parishat but against the individual at its helm. He alleged that 20 amendments to the parishat's proposed bylaw revisions were designed to centralise authority, marginalising district and taluk bodies to consolidate control.
'As sum of ₹30 crore was granted by the government for the Mandya Sahitya Sammelan, of which Kannada Sahitya Parishat received ₹2.5 crore for which Joshi has yet to provide a proper account. The 2023–24 annual report and auditor's findings already highlight irregularities in membership records, development works, and building renovations,' he noted.
'In the 108-year history of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat, no one has ever claimed daily travel allowances for their literary service. However, Mr. Joshi has claimed a total annual expenditure of ₹22 lakh under travel and related allowances. Recent literary conventions in the State have become increasingly extravagant, reduced merely to food, snacks, and festivity. By conducting these events in an arbitrary and self-serving manner, Mr. Joshi is displaying an authoritarian approach, and the protest against him will now be intensified,' he added.
Writer Vasundhara Bhoopathi condemned Mr. Joshi's alleged harassment of office staff and pointed out the unprecedented postponement of the annual general body meeting scheduled in Sandur.
Meera Shivalingayya, convenor of the Mandya Sahitya Sammelan, expressed deep disappointment over Mr. Joshi's conduct at the event and declared that statewide protests would continue against his authoritarian tendencies.
Sunanda Jayaram of the Women Farmers' Association and Janagere Venkataramaiah also spoke at the press meet.

Govt plans to get Musthaq to launch Dasara to counter RSS rhetoric on Constitution

Bengaluru: The state govt is actively considering naming International Booker Prize-winning Kannada writer Banu Mushtaq as the chief guest to inaugurate this year's Dasara festivities in Mysuru, hoping to hit several targets with the decision. If selected, Banu would be the first Muslim to inaugurate the state festival since renowned Kannada poet KS Nisar Ahmed in 2017 — during Siddaramaiah's earlier tenure as CM. Sources say there is also a proposal to have Deepa Bhasti, the translator of Banu's award-winning short story collection Heart Lamp, join her in inaugurating the festivities. Senior Congress functionaries say the move could carry a significant political message. "Choosing Banu would make an eloquent political statement in favour of secularism," said a senior functionary. "It would be a fitting counter to Sangh's rhetoric," said another Congress functionary. He is likely to take a decision in a week or two. Amarnath confirmed to reporters that Banu is being considered. She said a joint inauguration by the author and translator would be "a great honour and recognition of women achievers". "I hope Siddaramaiah would see the significance of choosing Banu," she said. "No one is more suitable to inaugurate the Dasara this year than Banu, as she brought accolades to Kannada at the world forum." Amarnath said choosing Mushtaq would send out a "healthy message" especially at a time when "society needs values, and communal harmony should be upheld". "It is even more significant now since some forces are posing a threat to these values," she said. "They are talking of removing the words 'secular' and 'socialist' from the Preamble of the Constitution." Musthaq was unfazed by the political chatter surrounding her potential nomination but said: "I am yet to hear from the govt on this," she told TOI. Meanwhile, Kannada Sahitya Parishat president Mahesh Joshi said Banu has agreed to preside over the Sahitya Sammelana, to be held in Ballari in Dec, though she has yet to formally confirm. "As for presiding over the Kannada Sahitya Sammelana, I am happy about it," Mushtaq said. "I have said that it is my duty to work for the Kannada cause. However, I need some time to decide on taking it up, as I want to consider some nuanced issues." Oblivious to the "political hullabaloo", the celebrated author said she remains "open-minded" to the idea of inaugurating Dasara, should the govt extend an invitation. Mahadevappa dismisses Ashoka's CM change claims

Mysuru: Mysuru district minister HC Mahadevappa firmly dismissed opposition leader R Ashoka's claim that would not inaugurate this year's Dasara festivities. Ashoka is not the Congress high command—he is merely the leader of the opposition. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now What authority does he have over Congress matters, Mahadevappa questioned, even as he refuted any internal discussions or plans suggesting a change in leadership. Speaking to reporters in Mysuru, the minister asserted that no such conversation took place. I didn't hear anything about a transfer of power. Siddaramaiah is the chief minister and will inaugurate Dasara. He will continue to be the CM, Mahadevappa, who is a close associate of Siddaramaiah, said. Emphasising the govt's stability, Mahadevappa added, "The Congress govt is stable and will complete its full five-year term. I say this with full confidence." Taking a jibe at the BJP, he remarked, "The BJP is in a state of anticipation—just watching, hoping the elephant (the Congress govt) will stumble. But the elephant will not fall. They'll keep waiting in vain." Responding to certain MLAs predicting a political 'revolution' within three months, the minister dismissed it as baseless speculation. "Ask them what they meant. Some may have spoken from a personal viewpoint, but it has nothing to do with the party or the govt." He said that while political changes are not unusual, the Congress govt in Karnataka remains strong and unaffected.
