Mysuru: Mysuru district minister HC Mahadevappa firmly dismissed opposition leader R Ashoka's claim that
would not inaugurate this year's Dasara festivities.
Ashoka is not the Congress high command—he is merely the leader of the opposition.

What authority does he have over Congress matters, Mahadevappa questioned, even as he refuted any internal discussions or plans suggesting a change in leadership.
Speaking to reporters in Mysuru, the minister asserted that no such conversation took place. I didn't hear anything about a transfer of power. Siddaramaiah is the chief minister and will inaugurate Dasara. He will continue to be the CM, Mahadevappa, who is a close associate of Siddaramaiah, said.
Emphasising the govt's stability, Mahadevappa added, "The Congress govt is stable and will complete its full five-year term. I say this with full confidence." Taking a jibe at the BJP, he remarked, "The BJP is in a state of anticipation—just watching, hoping the elephant (the Congress govt) will stumble. But the elephant will not fall. They'll keep waiting in vain."
Responding to certain MLAs predicting a political 'revolution' within three months, the minister dismissed it as baseless speculation. "Ask them what they meant. Some may have spoken from a personal viewpoint, but it has nothing to do with the party or the govt." He said that while political changes are not unusual, the Congress govt in Karnataka remains strong and unaffected.

Bajwa, Sahney support Diljit Dosanjh amid controversy

Jun 30, 2025 08:22 AM IST Senior Congress leader and leader of Opposition in state assembly Partap Singh Bajwa has supported singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh amid recent calls by the Federation of Western India Cine Employees to revoke his Indian citizenship over casting of Pakistani actress Hania Amir in Sardaar Ji 3. 'I find FWICE's demand not only unreasonable but also completely unjustified,' said Bajwa. 'Diljit is a celebrated Indian artiste who has made all of us proud on the global stage,' he said, adding that artistic collaborations should not be politicised. Rajya Sabha member Vikramjit Singh Sahney said questioning Diljit's patriotism was unjust. (HT File) Rajya Sabha member Vikramjit Singh Sahney said questioning Diljit's patriotism was unjust. In a statement, Sahney said Dosanjh had clearly clarified that the movie was shot in February, well before the Pahalgam attack, during which even an India-Pakistan cricket match also took place. 'We must not confuse timelines or facts when judging intent,' he said. The MP lauded Dosanjh for his sensitivity to public sentiment, citing his decision not to release the film in India.

Spreading Bhagavad Gita's message in ‘mohallas' will strengthen Hindu Rashtra: Rane

Maharashtra minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Nitesh Rane said on Sunday that the idea of the Hindu Rashtra would be strengthened if teachings of the Bhagavad Gita were propagated in 'mohallas' for the 'transformation of thoughts'. Rane further suggested that instead of deepening divides among Hindus, efforts should be made to teach Marathi to those who have lived in Mumbai for decades but have not embraced the language. (HT FILE) Noting that the Gita never preaches hatred or advocates (religious) conversions, Rane said, 'If its teachings spread to mohallas (Muslim areas), even their thoughts will transform. This will make our Hindu Rashtra stronger'. 'Teachings of the Bhagavad Gita promote harmony and transformation of thought. Its message should reach every corner,' he told reporters. Amid a row over the inclusion of Hindi in the school curriculum from class 1 and demonstrations staged by the Opposition, Rane said, 'No language is being made compulsory. Students can opt for Sanskrit as the third language if they wish'. The BJP leader claimed he never heard lyricist Javed Akhtar, actor Aamir Khan, or Congress leader Rahul Gandhi speaking in the Marathi language. The Shiv Sena (UBT) and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) have announced to organise a joint march against the 'imposition' of Hindi in schools on July 5. 'Why not hold rallies in areas like Behrampada or Mohammad Ali Road? These are the places where Hindi is spoken. The day 'azaan' (Islamic call for prayer) is delivered in Marathi, we will know there is true respect for the language,' he told reporters. Rane further suggested that instead of deepening divides among Hindus, efforts should be made to teach Marathi to those who have lived in Mumbai for decades but have not embraced the language. When asked about Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar advocating the introduction of Hindi from class 5, Rane said Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will speak with Pawar. He took a veiled swipe at Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray over the choice of language. 'If you studied at Bombay Scottish, why did you not choose Sanskrit? Why Spanish or French?' he asked.

Will oppose exercise legally, politically: Congress questions EC move

NEW DELHI: As the EC began its Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Bihar's electoral rolls, the Congress on Sunday said it will oppose the move legally, politically, and on all fronts. The move invited scathing criticism from the Opposition parties as the EC on Saturday said around 2.93 crore of 7.89 crore voters, or about 37% of the electorate, will have to submit proof of their eligibility. Speaking with this newspaper, Congress leader Praveen Chakravartyquestioned the methodology adopted by the EC to ascertain that 37% of the Bihar electorate will have to re-register. 'How did they get the figure of 37%? This means they have the electoral roll of 2003 in a machine-readable format. Otherwise, it's impossible to analyse and come up with the figure. The Congress has been demanding the Maharashtra electoral rolls for a long time. If they have the 2003 rolls, why are they not showing us the 2024 Maharashtra voter rolls?' said Chakravarty, a member of EAGLE, an eight-member Congress panel tasked with looking into polls. He also pointed out that the EC had mooted a proposal on March 8 for electoral roll cleaning using Aadhaar, which, while not perfect, is a more viable alternative solution than an intensive voter revision in Bihar. 'Why did the EC abandon that to suddenly announce an SIR three months after the Aadhaar proposal?' he asked. The EC's move on June 24, requiring all existing voters who were not on the 2003 rolls to provide proof of their and their parents' citizenship, has also sparked concerns of disenfranchisement and exclusion of the poor and marginalised from voter rolls. 'If I was a voter in 2024 or 2019, that doesn't mean I am a voter now. I have to re-register. Now, they are saying I have to prove my veracity as a voter and prove date and place of birth. Why am I guilty until proven innocent?' he said. Chakravarty also said the EC has come up with arduous rules for providing birth certificates of voters and their parents, depending on the year of birth. Besides Union and state government officials will now dictate who has correct documents and who doesn't, thus dictating who gets to vote in the upcoming Bihar assembly polls.
