But Sarepta has now voluntarily and temporarily paused all shipments of the therapy, effective end of Tuesday. The company said the decision would allow it to respond to requests from the FDA and maintain a positive relationship with the agency.
"Though Sarepta claims its pause in shipments was voluntary, we think the company moved preemptively - bracing for an inevitable FDA mandate to pull the drug," said H.C. Wainwright analyst Mitchell Kapoor.
Shares of Sarepta fell 6.9% to $12.40 in early trading on Tuesday.
Live Events
"Sarepta's decision to comply was a capitulation after recognizing that the fight with the FDA was not winnable and that the agency would have strong-armed Sarepta into removing
Elevidys
with a formal demand," Kapoor added.
Investor concerns regarding the use of the company's treatments have been heightened after the company on Friday disclosed that another patient who had received its experimental gene therapy died from
acute liver failure
, marking the third death this year.
The company's shares have plummeted 89% so far this year.
On Monday, Children's Hospital Los Angeles said it had paused usage of Elevidys in all patients with
muscular dystrophy
.
The FDA's initial request had likely heightened the pressure on physicians to pause treatments, which could also have been a driving factor in Sarepta's decision, William Blair analyst Sami Corwin said.

Kim Jong Un's sister dismisses South Korea's peace proposals, calls it 'miscalculation'

North Korea has no interest in any policy or proposals for reconciliation from South Korea, the powerful sister of its leader Kim Jong Un said on Monday in the first response to South Korean liberal President Lee Jae Myung 's peace overtures . Kim Yo Jong , who is a senior North Korean ruling party official and is believed to speak for the country's leader, said Lee's pledge of commitment to South Korea-U.S. security alliance shows he is no different from his hostile predecessor. As gestures aimed at easing tensions, Lee suspended loudspeaker broadcasts blasting anti-North propaganda across the border and banned the flying of leaflets by activists that had angered Pyongyang. Live Events Kim, the North Korean official, said those moves are merely a reversal of ill-intentioned activities by South Korea that should never have been initiated in the first place. "In other words, it's not even something worth our assessment," she said. "We again make clear the official position that whatever policy is established in Seoul or proposal is made, we are not interested, and we will not be sitting down with South Korea and there is nothing to discuss." There has been cautious optimism in the South that the North may respond positively and may even show willingness to re-engage in dialogue, particularly after Pyongyang also shut off its loudspeakers, a move Lee said was quicker than expected. Still, Lee, whose government is in the midst of tough negotiations with Washington to avert punishing tariffs that President Donald Trump has threatened against a string of major trading partners, has said U.S. alliance is the pillar of South Korea's diplomacy. "Through efforts in the areas of politics, economic security and culture, we will strengthen the South Korea-U.S. alliance that was sealed in blood," Lee said in remarks commemorating the anniversary of the Korean War armistice on Sunday. North Korea also marked the anniversary which it calls victory day with events including a parade in Pyongyang, although state media reports indicated it was at a relatively lesser scale compared to some previous years. The two Koreas, the United States and China, which are the main belligerents in the 1950-53 Korean War, have not signed a peace treaty.

Air pollution exposure linked to higher dementia risk, major study finds

Long-term exposure to air pollution may significantly raise the risk of developing dementia, according to a major new study involving nearly 29 million people. Published in The Lancet Planetary Health, the research was led by scientists at the University of Cambridge's MRC Epidemiology Unit. It reviewed 51 studies from across North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia to better understand the relationship between air pollutants and cognitive decline. Key findings For every 10 micrograms per cubic metre (μg/m³) increase in PM2.5, the risk of developing dementia rose by 17 percent. A 10 μg/m³ increase in NO₂ was linked to a 3 percent rise in dementia risk. Each 1 μg/m³ increase in soot was associated with a 13 percent higher risk. PM2.5 refers to fine particulate matter less than 2.5 microns in diameter, small enough to enter deep into the lungs and potentially the brain. These particles come from sources such as vehicle exhaust, industrial processes, power plants, wood burning, and construction dust. Live Events Average roadside PM2.5 levels in Central London in 2023 were around 10 μg/m³, while NO₂ levels were approximately 33 μg/m³. Possible biological mechanisms Researchers believe air pollution may contribute to dementia through oxidative stress and inflammation, processes that damage brain cells and are known to play a role in the development of neurodegenerative conditions. Some pollutants may reach the brain directly via the bloodstream or through the olfactory nerve, while others may cause indirect effects through the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. Unequal exposure The majority of participants in the analysed studies were white and from high-income countries. However, the researchers noted that marginalised and low-income communities, who are more likely to be exposed to air pollution, are underrepresented in research. 'Efforts to reduce exposure to these key pollutants are likely to help reduce the burden of dementia on society,' said co-author Clare Rogowski. Public health implications Globally, over 57 million people are estimated to be living with dementia. That number is projected to rise to 152.8 million by 2050, according to the World Health Organization. While other factors such as age, genetics, diet, and lifestyle play significant roles in dementia risk, researchers argue that environmental policies should be considered part of dementia prevention strategies. The study was funded by the European Research Council and the European Union's Horizon Europe Framework Programme.

Nifty resistance seen at around 25,500 levels: Analysts

The Nifty closed below the 25,000 level on Friday after declining almost 1%, and this weakness is likely to continue in the short term, said analysts. While levels around 24,500 are expected to act as key support for the benchmark, resistance is likely around the 25,200–25,500 zone. VIX levels could also see an uptick, especially closer to the monthly expiry. However, pharma stocks could continue their upward trajectory. The benchmark index traded with a negative bias and closed below the psychological 25,000 level with a bearish formation. Bank Nifty outperformed the benchmark index and closed with an indecisive candlestick formation on the weekly chart. FIIs have continued to add shorts on index futures, and their net short positions have reached 86%. Historically, the market has witnessed a short-covering rally once shorts reach the 86-89% zone. Traders can expect volatile momentum in all indices during the monthly expiry week. Nifty has support at 24,500 and resistance at 25,200–25,500 levels. Bank Nifty has support at 56,000 and resistance at 57,200–58,000 levels. Trading strategies for the week Pharma has seen outperformance in last two weeks and may continue its outperformance. Biocon is the top pick; Cipla and Syngene are in accumulation zone. RIL has reached near weekly support level; investors can accumulate at current levels. Jindal Steel and Power may continue upward momentum. Nifty Defence index has broken below a key support level; HAL and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders have closed with bearish candlestick formation, and a rally is a short-selling opportunity. Investors can look to accumulate Capri Global Capital, Saksoft, RACL Geartech, and NLC India at current levels. Live Events Agencies NILESH JAIN VP, EQUITY TECHNICAL & DERIVATIVE RESEARCH, CENTRUM BROKING Where is the Nifty headed this week? The Nifty extended its losing streak for the fourth consecutive week. It faced strong resistance near its 21-DMA, currently around 25,300, which remains a key hurdle. It breached the support level of 25,000, which aligns with its 50-DMA, and this zone is now expected to act as a resistance. A decisive move back above 25,000 could trigger short covering, pushing the index towards 25,200. For the week ahead, the Nifty is likely to trade within a range of 24,500–25,200. The VIX seems to have found support near its multi-month low around 10-mark and has started inching higher, suggesting potential rise in market volatility. Trading strategies for the week With the monthly expiry approaching, markets are expected to remain volatile in coming week. We recommend focusing on stock-specific and sectoral opportunities rather than broader index moves. We are seeing sectoral rotation, with market focus shifting back towards defensive segments. The Pharma Index is exhibiting strength by forming a higher top–higher bottom structure, indicating positive short-term trend. Stocks such as Lupin, Cipla, Torrent Pharma, and Apollo Hospitals look well-positioned and can be considered for accumulation. In the insurance space, SBI Life and HDFC Life appear better placed. The IT sector is weighing down indices. The overall structure remains weak. As such, it is advisable to stay away from the sector for now. Additionally, oil & gas and FMCG sectors are also showing signs of weakness and lack nearterm conviction. RUCHIT JAIN HEAD, TECHNICAL RESEARCH, MOTILAL OSWAL FIN SERVICES Where is the Nifty headed next week? After an 18% rally from the April lows, Nifty has entered a corrective phase this July. Index closed the week below its 50-DEMA, and the RSI on daily and weekly charts continues to show a negative crossover. The index is expected to trade within a range of 24,600–25,250, and a decisive breakout above will be needed for resumption of uptrend. In case of a breakdown below 24,600, next support lies in previous swing low zone of 24,500–24,450. Trading strategies for the week Midcap and smallcap indices remain in a consolidation phase. Most sectoral indices are showing signs of a pause or pullback. We continue to advise short-term traders to stay cautious. Pharma and healthcare could outperform, and selective opportunities can be considered in Torrent Pharma, IPCA Labs, and Max Health
