Federal agency director in Kelantan to face corruption, power abuse charges, says MACC chief

Malay Mail10 hours ago
KOTA BARU, July 3 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will charge a director in a federal government department in Kelantan soon for alleged abuse of power, corruption and false claims.
MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said the director, who is about to retire, will be charged soon after the deputy public prosecutor agreed to the proposed charges submitted by Kelantan MACC.
'I do not want to mention his name but it will be announced soon. The senior civil servant may be charged within two or three weeks from now or maybe even sooner.
'This is a continuous effort by Kelantan MACC in carrying out their responsibility to look into issues involving leakages. This is MACC's previous strategy that I have announced, where we see the issue of leakage in the country as our focus to resolve corruption issues as best as possible,' he said.
He said this in a press conference after witnessing the handover ceremony of the new Kelantan MACC director, Azmin Yusoff, and the previous incumbent, Rosli Husain, here, today.
Azam said since he was assigned to Kelantan from 1989 to 2000, many changes have occurred and new approaches are needed in operations, prevention and community education.
'Any action must have an impact on the community so that they feel the MACC's actions. If we are still at the same level in resolving corruption and abuse of power issues at the national or state level, it will not change. So to make the public feel our actions, we must focus.
'...With the presence of efficient, experienced and highly skilled officers and staff, this strategy can be implemented nationwide,' he said.
Commenting further, he said the scale of the director who will be prosecuted should be taken as a lesson.
'If the director himself is involved in a criminal issue, obviously he cannot lead and this is something we need to emphasise in the public service,' he said.
Azam stressed that the investigation into the case has been completed and his party will announce the matter soon. — Bernama

MACC calls 61 witnesses in MEX II project probe

KOTA BARU: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has summoned 61 witnesses in its ongoing investigation into the Maju Expressway (MEX II) extension project. MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed the matter and said all the witnesses in question had been called recently. He said the amount of property seized involving a Tan Sri also remained the same as previously announced. "I have given my officers a maximum of two months to complete the investigation papers for this case and I believe that the investigation papers will be completed in less than two months to be submitted to the DPP (Deputy Public Prosecutor)," he said. Azam said this at a press conference after witnessing the handover ceremony of the new Kelantan MACC director Azmin Yusoff and the former director, Rosli Husain, here today. On May 29, various assets including luxury vehicles, jewellery, designer handbags and cash worth RM32 million were seized from a Tan Sri who is being investigated by the MACC over false claims and misuse of loan bonds for the construction of a highway in the Klang Valley. According to sources, all the luxury items were seized by MACC Investigation Division investigating officers after raiding two of the Tan Sri's residences located in the capital. The 18-kilometre MEX II Highway project began construction in 2016 and was supposed to be completed in December 2019. It is planned to connect Putrajaya to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). Last month, Works Minister Alexander Nanta Linggi was reported to have said the government was working with all stakeholders to resolve the delay in MEX II, which was allegedly stalled due to financial problems. - Bernama

Malaysia succeeds in attracting RM8.13bil potential investments from Italy

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. ROME: Potential investments worth RM8.13 billion have been achieved through the Malaysia-Italy economic cooperation roundtable meeting and meetings with companies here, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The roundtable meeting involved the participation of 41 Italian companies and agencies, comprising 23 companies from the manufacturing sector, nine companies from the service sector, two companies from the trade sector as well as five government agencies and two industrial organisations. "The potential investments achieved through these two meetings are worth RM8.13 billion in the petrochemical, machinery and equipment, electrical and electronics, and oil and gas services and equipment sectors,' he said at a press conference at the end of his visit to Rome, Italy. Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, said the potential exports generated were worth RM425 million for oleochemical products, renewable energy, biofuel feedstocks, animal feed additives and food. The roundtable meeting allowed potential companies in Italy an opportunity to express their desire to collaborate with Malaysian companies in various sectors such as high-tech manufacturing, renewable energy, digital economy and sustainable infrastructure. Meanwhile, Anwar said that in a bilateral meeting with his counterpart Giorgia Meloni, Rome and Putrajaya would increase cooperation in the energy, solar, geothermal and hydrogen sectors. Among the collaborations are the Petronas and Eni SpA joint venture in Pengerang, Johor in the sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) sector; Perodua and Magna Styer for electric vehicle batteries; and collaboration and investment in the modernisation of the electricity grid, including the ASEAN Power Grid (APG). In the discussion, the Prime Minister said he also applied for recognition of the Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) certification from Italy, in addition to requesting support for a fairer assessment of the European Union Deforestation-Free Products Regulation (EUDR) Implementation. Malaysia aims to be in the low-risk category in the EUDR benchmark system when the rating is reviewed by 2026. Meanwhile, Malaysia has also sought Italy's support in concluding negotiations on the Malaysia-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA). The Prime Minister arrived here on Tuesday for a three-day working visit to Italy, the third largest economy in the EU. The visit was at the invitation of Meloni. Throughout the visit, Anwar was accompanied by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Transport Minister Anthony Loke, Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin and Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz. Also joining the delegation was Deputy Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir. In 2024, total trade between Malaysia and Italy recorded an increase of two per cent to US$3.18 billion (RM14.61 billion) compared to the same period in 2023. For the period from January to May 2025, total trade between the two countries continued to show positive performance with an increase of 3.3 per cent to US$1.48 billion (RM6.5 billion) compared to the same period in 2024. The Prime Minister departed for France for an official visit on July 3 and 4 after concluding his visit to Italy. - Bernama
