ROME: Potential investments worth RM8.13 billion have been achieved through the Malaysia-Italy economic cooperation roundtable meeting and meetings with companies here, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The roundtable meeting involved the participation of 41 Italian companies and agencies, comprising 23 companies from the manufacturing sector, nine companies from the service sector, two companies from the trade sector as well as five government agencies and two industrial organisations.
"The potential investments achieved through these two meetings are worth RM8.13 billion in the petrochemical, machinery and equipment, electrical and electronics, and oil and gas services and equipment sectors,' he said at a press conference at the end of his visit to Rome, Italy.
Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, said the potential exports generated were worth RM425 million for oleochemical products, renewable energy, biofuel feedstocks, animal feed additives and food.
The roundtable meeting allowed potential companies in Italy an opportunity to express their desire to collaborate with Malaysian companies in various sectors such as high-tech manufacturing, renewable energy, digital economy and sustainable infrastructure.
Meanwhile, Anwar said that in a bilateral meeting with his counterpart Giorgia Meloni, Rome and Putrajaya would increase cooperation in the energy, solar, geothermal and hydrogen sectors.
Among the collaborations are the Petronas and Eni SpA joint venture in Pengerang, Johor in the sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) sector; Perodua and Magna Styer for electric vehicle batteries; and collaboration and investment in the modernisation of the electricity grid, including the ASEAN Power Grid (APG).
In the discussion, the Prime Minister said he also applied for recognition of the Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) certification from Italy, in addition to requesting support for a fairer assessment of the European Union Deforestation-Free Products Regulation (EUDR) Implementation.
Malaysia aims to be in the low-risk category in the EUDR benchmark system when the rating is reviewed by 2026.
Meanwhile, Malaysia has also sought Italy's support in concluding negotiations on the Malaysia-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
The Prime Minister arrived here on Tuesday for a three-day working visit to Italy, the third largest economy in the EU.
The visit was at the invitation of Meloni.
Throughout the visit, Anwar was accompanied by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Transport Minister Anthony Loke, Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin and Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz.
Also joining the delegation was Deputy Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir.
In 2024, total trade between Malaysia and Italy recorded an increase of two per cent to US$3.18 billion (RM14.61 billion) compared to the same period in 2023.
For the period from January to May 2025, total trade between the two countries continued to show positive performance with an increase of 3.3 per cent to US$1.48 billion (RM6.5 billion) compared to the same period in 2024.

‘Seats will be recaptured': Zahid says Umno conducting studies to identify PAS, Bersatu-held areas to target next GE

BATU PAHAT, July 5 — Barisan Nasional (BN) has expressed its intention to recapture several seats currently held by Bersatu and PAS in the upcoming General Election (GE). Its chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said that, for this purpose, various studies and surveys would be conducted to identify potential seats the party has a strong chance of winning. 'We will work hard... and the seats will be recaptured by Umno candidates in the upcoming GE,' he said when officiating the closing ceremony of the Sri Gading Umno Division Delegates' Meeting here today. Also present were Johor Umno Liaison Committee chairman and Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi, as well as Sri Gading Umno Division chief Datuk Mohd Lassim Burhan. Ahmad Zahid, who is also Umno president, urged all members not to be swayed by the 'UMDAP' narrative propagated by the opposition, stressing that the current political cooperation involves a coalition between Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Harapan (PH). 'In BN, we also have MCA and MIC; in PH, there are DAP, PKR, and Amanah. So, let's not fall for the opposition's propaganda aimed at driving a wedge between BN and PH just so they can resort to the 'tebuk atap' (backdoor) tactic again,' said the Deputy Prime Minister. Ahmad Zahid said the political cooperation currently being forged is a reality that all party members must accept and understand to ensure the stability of the government and to pave the way for Umno's return to dominance. 'If we want to win, we must find a way to win. While we are in government, we must work seriously. We cannot expect victory if we are complacent, if we fight among ourselves, if we betray one another, or if we allow others to attack us without defending ourselves,' he said. — Bernama

Why Singaporeans are buying Porsches and BMWs in Johor for a weekend thrill

JOHOR BARU — On weekdays, Singaporean entrepreneur Iylia Kwan drives a Toyota Corolla Altis from his family home in Yishun, but on weekends, he hits Malaysia's highways in a used Porsche Cayenne SUV registered across the border. The 36-year-old bachelor, who rents a semi-detached house in Pasir Gudang, bought the secondhand 2009 Cayenne for RM50,000, a fraction of what a similar car would cost in Singapore with COE included, The Straits Times reported. He recently added a used Mercedes-Benz E-Class with a personalised number plate as a birthday present to himself, calling it a 'fated' buy. Kwan is one of a growing number of Singaporeans buying sports and luxury cars in Malaysia, driven by rising COE prices and restrictions on car ownership back home. While Singapore bans citizens and PRs from using foreign-registered vehicles locally, many simply store their Malaysian cars across the border for weekend use. Some rent parking spots in Johor Baru condominiums from RM200 to RM400 monthly, while others rely on friends' homes to keep their vehicles safe. Carlogy, a new 24,000 sq ft vehicle storage facility in Skudai run by two Singaporeans, offers air-conditioned parking and concierge services to cater to this niche demand. Luxury and reconditioned vehicles are significantly cheaper in Malaysia, with Johor car dealers reporting increased sales to Singaporeans in recent years. Singaporean motoring fans like Kelvin Kok and Afeeq Anwar use their Malaysian-registered vehicles for leisure drives, motorsports events and even routine grocery runs in Johor. Experts warn, however, that cross-border car ownership comes with risks, urging buyers to ensure proper registration and insurance to avoid complications.

Going deep to study scammers using AI deepfake vidoes

PETALING JAYA: With deepfake videos showing supposedly well-known Malaysians promoting fake investments, scammers are increasingly using advanced AI tools to deceive the public and gain their trust. Former Pasir Pinji assemblyman Datuk Chan Kam took a bold step by deliberately engaging with a fake online investment scheme to warn the public about how such scams operate. He said many scammers were now using artificial intelligence (AI) to create highly realistic fake investment videos and advertisements. These are then widely circulated on social media to trick people into handing over their money. Chan, who was accompanied by MCA Public Services and Complaints Department head Datuk Seri Michael Chong, held a press conference at Wisma MCA on Saturday (July 5). 'In the past two months, I've noticed more of these fake investment ads appearing online. So last month, I decided to click on one of them to see what would happen,' he said. 'After entering my contact details, I received a call from someone speaking Mandarin. The caller told me about an investment opportunity and even helped me set up an account.' Chan said he then transferred RM1,100 to a bank account provided by the scammer and followed the instructions as though he were a genuine investor. 'The scammer contacted me daily, sharing so-called good news about the investment and encouraging me to invest more. 'Fortunately, I knew it was a scam from the beginning, so I didn't proceed further. But the RM1,100 I initially transferred is gone,' he said. He explained that the money had been pooled together by himself, Chong, and several members of the Malaysia-China Friendship and Mutual Assistance Association and the Crime Prevention Foundation. Their aim was to understand how these online scams work. Chan said he used his real name and bank account for the transaction and has kept all relevant evidence. He plans to lodge a police report soon. 'I hope that by sharing my experience, more people will be cautious and avoid falling for these scams on social media,' he added. Meanwhile, Chong said scammers are using AI to produce deep fake videos that appear to show well-known Malaysians endorsing fake investment schemes — raking in billions from unsuspecting victims. He added that the scammers also create deep fake videos of leaders like Anwar, MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong and other ministers. Some videos even include logos from trusted media outlets like The Star to appear as authentic news reports. Other prominent individuals targeted in these scams include tycoon Tan Sri Robert Kuok, former Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat and Capital A CEO Tan Sri Tony Fernandes. 'It's ridiculous – our Prime Minister doesn't even have an Indian accent,' Chong remarked. 'And remember, there's no such thing as easy money. How could paying a small amount give you huge returns? 'With AI now so advanced, people must be extra cautious. If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.' He also shared police data showing that in 2024, there were 13,956 scam cases reported, involving total losses of RM2.11bil. He added that 85% of these scams originated from platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp and Telegram.
