An advocate on Thursday filed a petition in the Madras High Court seeking framing and implementation of detailed guidelines for aviation-related media reporting to ensure that no premature statements are made until official investigations are complete. The Public Interest Litigation (PIL) petition filed by advocate M Pravin , in the wake of the June 12 Air India flight crash in Ahmedabad that killed 260 people, is likely to come up for hearing early. In his petition, Pravin submitted that it was a well-known fact that after aviation incidents, news media, social media platforms and digital intermediaries frequently publish "unverified content" that prejudges and attributes blame to pilots. This practice not only damages their reputation and career prospects but also affects their personal dignity and mental well-being. One such instance occurred following the aviation accident on June 12, 2025 (Ahmedabad incident), which led to wide circulation of speculative media reports attributing fault to the flight crew while the investigation remained pending. He said he submitted a representation, dated July 14, 2025, to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Directorate General of Civil Aviation and Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. The representation sought institutional safeguards including the issuance of advisories to media houses, enforcement of confidentiality protocols regarding pilot identities and preliminary investigation findings, and formulation of content moderation guidelines for digital platforms under the IT Rules.Despite the gravity of these concerns and the public interest involved, no effective action has been taken till date by the authorities, he added. He said the "premature blame cast on pilots" in the aftermath of aviation accidents violates the principle of presumption of innocence and the fundamental right to dignity and privacy guaranteed under Article 14, Article 19(a), and Article 21 of the Constitution. The inaction and failure of the authorities to institute effective regulatory safeguards have serious implications not only for aviation safety but also for the sanctity of fair and just media reporting in the digital age.He said such inaction was contrary to the statutory obligations imposed on the authorities under applicable laws such as the Information Technology Act and the IT (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules as well as aviation regulations. The publication of unverified, speculative, defamatory, or misleading content related to aviation accidents severely harms the reputation of the concerned professionals, diminishes public trust and casts an unfair and damaging impression on the aviation system as a whole.Such reporting may also prejudice or interfere with the fairness of ongoing investigations or proceedings. Therefore, the present issue calls for urgent collaboration among the departments and relevant stakeholders to establish mechanisms that promote responsible and ethical digital reporting.

"This is wrong...": Rajeev Shukla on government's decision to ban 25 OTT platforms, websites

(Picture Courtesy: Facebook) Rajeev Shukla has strongly criticised the government's recent decision to ban 25 OTT platforms and websites, alleging that the move is an attack on freedom of expression. Shukla claimed that the government's action is selective and politically motivated, targeting platforms that offer alternative perspectives or criticise government policies. ".Dekhiye obscene, vulgar koi cheez ho to usko rokkar aap upaye kijiye.. We are against the way freedom of expression is being attacked and websites and YouTube channels opposing the government are being banned. This is hum virodh kar rahe hai..," Shukla told ANI. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has ordered the blocking of 25 over-the-top (OTT) platforms for allegedly publishing obscene, vulgar and, in some cases, pornographic material. There was hardly any storyline, theme, or message in a social context The directive was issued on July 23, 2025, in consultation with multiple government departments and civil society stakeholders, according to sources. According to the sources, the Ministry said that much of the content showcased by these platforms involved graphic sexual innuendos, long sequences of nudity, and pornographic visuals. A total of 14 mobile applications, 26 websites have been ordered to be disabled by intermediaries under provisions of the IT Act, 2000 and the IT (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021. The government had several rounds of communication with the platforms. In September 2024, all 25 platforms had received official warnings. Prior to this, in February 2025, the Ministry had issued an advisory urging OTT platforms to comply with India's obscenity laws and the Code of Ethics prescribed under the IT Rules, 2021. Yet, the platforms allegedly continued to host and stream objectionable content. In one notable example, the series 'House Arrest' hosted on the Ullu platform was taken down in May following the Ministry's intervention. However, the government alleges that certain platforms have continued their operations by creating new domains, even after previous blocking orders. Five such platforms reportedly resumed publishing similar content after being blocked in March 2024. The latest action was taken in consultation with the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), the Ministry of Women and Child Development (MWCD), the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), the Department of Legal Affairs (DoLA), industry associations FICCI and CII, and subject experts in the fields of women and child rights. Mentioning that previously the Digital Publisher Content Grievances Council (DPCGC), a self-regulatory body headed by a former Supreme Court judge, found that content edited on ALTT was "totally distasteful and bizarre," with sex and nudity being shown without any contextual justification. Similarly, over 100 web series were also removed from the Ullu platform, with the council finding that the platform temporarily removed or edited the web series and then uploaded the unedited versions later to circumvent the warnings. Several of the platforms had previously drawn the attention of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), which flagged Ullu and ALTT for alleged violations in July and August 2024. The Ministry also received multiple public grievances about the content hosted on these platforms.

Transformer scam: Reply sought from former Electricity Min Balaji, DVAC

CHENNAI: Justice P Velmurugan of the Madras High Court on Friday ordered notice to the director of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC), the chairman and managing director of Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO), former electricity minister V Senthil Balaji and others on a petition filed by E Saravanan, deputy secretary of AIADMK lawyers' wing. The petition had sought directions to the DVAC to register an FIR in connection with the alleged irregularities in procurement of transformers. The petitioner alleged that Rs 397 crore loss was inflicted on the public sector undertaking due to the irregularities in procuring 45,800 transformers at a cost of Rs 1,068 crore during 2021-23. He stated the DVAC has not taken appropriate action based on his representation submitted in May seeking registration of FIR and setting up a special investigation team to probe the matter. The judge further directed the Registry to tag this petition with the one filed by Arappor Iyakkam on the same issue and adjourned hearing by four weeks.

Oraniyil Tamil Nadu: DMK enrols two crore new members

CHENNAI: The DMK has said its 'Oraniyil Tamil Nadu' initiative has crossed two crore enrolment. Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin also confirmed this while speaking to the party's booth level functionaries in Chennai on Thursday evening, saying the two crore enrolment has rattled the opposition AIADMK. For the last three weeks, since July 3, the grassroots-level cadre of the party have been visiting door-to-door, meeting people at all the houses under every polling station as part of the initiative that aims to rally the people against the 'injustices' meted out to the state. If those enrolled under 'Oraniyil Tamil Nadu' wish to become party members, they could enrol through a separate process. A few days ago due to the restrictions imposed by the Madras High Court, the party leadership had updated the mobile application so that the enrolment could be done without OTP and collecting at least one mobile number from a member of the family. As the whole initiative is digitalised, Stalin has been monitoring realtime updates online. Under the initiative launched on July 1, the DMK had set itself a target to reach approximately two crore households in 45 days.
