"Leading In Agriculture Development": PM Modi At Sikkim's 50th Statehood Day
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday called Sikkim a pride of the country and said the Centre seeks to make the northeastern state a global tourism destination.
"In the coming years, India is poised to emerge as a global sports superpower. The Yuva Shakti of the Northeast and Sikkim will play a pivotal role in realising this dream," he said, as he addressed Sikkim's Golden Jubilee of Statehood celebration in Gangtok via videoconference.
"Our dream is that Sikkim should become a Green Model State not only for India but for the entire world," he added, stressing the importance of boosting Sikkim's economy and shaping it into a "wellness state".
PM Modi also said that "Sikkim is leading the way in a new wave of agricultural development".
"The foundation of a developed India rests on four strong pillars - empowerment of the poor, farmers, women, and youth", he said, as he praised the state's farmers for their significant contribution to India's agricultural advancements.
The Prime Minister noted that the famous Dalle Khorsani chilli from Sikkim was exported for the first time in March this year. The chillies are known for their very strong flavour and spice level.
In the coming years, the Prime Minister remarked, many more products from Sikkim will be exported globally. He affirmed that the central government is working shoulder to shoulder with the state government to support these efforts.
Stating that efforts to connect the capital cities of all northeastern states to the railway network are progressing rapidly, the Prime Minister underlined that the Sevoke-Rangpo rail line will integrate Sikkim into the national rail network. He emphasised that ropeways are being constructed as an alternative in areas where roads cannot be built.
In the past decade, India has advanced with new resolutions with a key focus on enhancing healthcare, PM Modi said. He pointed out that over the last 10-11 years, large hospitals have been established in every state. A 500-bed hospital has been dedicated to the people of Sikkim to ensure quality healthcare for even the most underprivileged families.
At the event, the Prime Minister also laid the foundation stone and inaugurated multiple development projects in Sikkim.
These projects include a new district hospital worth over Rs 750 crore in Namchi; Passenger Ropeway at Sangachoeling, Pelling in Gyalshing District and the statue of Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee ji at Atal Amrit Udyan at Sangkhola in Gangtok District.
Expressing gratitude to PM Modi, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang said, "On the historic occasion of Sikkim's Golden Jubilee of Statehood, we had the honour of unveiling a Rs 50 silver coin and a special commemorative postage stamp in the esteemed virtual presence of Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji, who joined us today from Bagdogra."
He added: "I sincerely thank Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji, for his thoughtful gesture in commemorating this milestone with the release of a Rs 50 silver coin and a special postage stamp. These symbols beautifully honour Sikkim's journey of integration, progress, and cultural pride."

'No Money To Buy Books Twice': Parents On Chhattisgarh Syllabus Order
Raipur: In Chhattisgarh, schools open in April. However, it seems the Education Department prefers surprise tests, not just for students but for parents too. On June 25, Raipur's District Education Officer issued an eight-point directive, catching schools and parents off-guard. By this time, most students had already completed two months of their academic session. Many parents had bought books worth thousands in April, only to now be told: "Wait, the government will distribute free books." "I bought books worth Rs 10,000 for my three daughters because schools reopened in April," says Dhalendra Sahu, a small trader from Raipur. "Now, if the syllabus changes, we'll suffer. Almost 70 per cent people will face problems. We don't earn enough to buy books twice." Mr Sahu, who earns Rs 25,000 to Rs 28,000 a month from agriculture, has three daughters - one each in Class 8, 3, and nursery. Like many parents, he trusted the schools' word and got the books early. Now, the government's order feels like an afterthought - like it, too, came back from a long summer break. The June 25 order left private schools scrambling. While books hadn't arrived, the department suggested they should wait. Rajiv Gupta, president of the Private School Association, says they had no choice but to move ahead with private publishers. "Schools reopened on June 16. It's been 15 days and we haven't received books," says Mr Gupta. "There are over 800 schools and two lakh students in Raipur alone. If the distribution begins on July 1, books won't reach all students before July 20." The Education Department's move seems well-intentioned on paper. But when students are midway through their syllabus, and books are nowhere in sight, parents ask - is this about learning or about logistics? The issue has taken a political turn. The Congress accuses the Education Department of colluding with private schools. Their charge: the delay in SCERT book distribution benefits private publishers. "Due to corrupt officials and the private school lobby, free books meant for lakhs of students haven't been given," says Congress spokesperson Vikas Tiwari. "Parents are being misled in the name of CBSE." The ruling BJP has a different take. While acknowledging the delay, they call it an educational "experiment". "This is part of a review process to improve education quality," says BJP spokesperson Gaurishankar Shrivas. "Yes, there's been a delay, and not all schools fall under the directive. The department will review and take appropriate steps." At the heart of the issue lies a simple question: was this order really for the students' benefit or just to decorate files? In an ideal world, children study from books, not from bureaucratic guidelines. But in Chhattisgarh this year, books seem to come only after orders - and that too, not before July.

New Delhi [India], June 30 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi will travel to Trinidad and Tobago on a two-day visit from July 3 as part of his multi-country eight-day-long tour that begins this Wednesday and will include visits to Ghana, Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia. Addressing a special media briefing in the national capital on Monday, Secretary (South) in the Ministry of External Affairs Neena Malhotra, said that the entire indian community in the Carribbean country was 'very enthusiastic' about PM Modi's upcoming visit. 'PM Modi will be undertaking an official visit to Trinidad and Tobago from July 3-4 at the invitation of Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar. This marks the first visit by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to T&T, or Trinidad and Tobago, as Prime Minister, and is the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to T&T since 1999,' Malhotra said. During his visit, Prime Minister Modi will hold talks with the President of Trinidad and Tobago, Christine Carla Kangaloo, and Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar to further strengthen bilateral ties. The Prime Minister will also address a Joint Session of the Parliament of Trinidad and Tobago. MEA Secretary, Neena Malhotra, highlighted the significance of the visit, stating, 'The visit comes at an opportune time, as this year, in 2025, the country is commemorating 180 years of the arrival of Indian immigrants to Trinidad and Tobago.' On May 30, 1845, the first ship 'Fatel Razack' carrying 225 Indian indentured workers reached the shores of Trinidad, then a British colony. Their numbers increased with subsequent arrival of more ships from India till 1917. The descendants of those indentured workers, now in their fifth or sixth generation, form nearly 40 per cent to 45 per cent of the total population of 1.36 million of the country. The presence of a substantial population of Indian-origin (the largest ethnic group) has contributed immensely to close bilateral relations between the two countries. India established bilateral relations with Trinidad and Tobago on August 31, 1962. In today's special briefing, MEA Secretary Malhotra also noted the shared Indian heritage between the two countries, mentioning that both the Trinidad and Tobago PM Kamla Persad-Bissessar and President Christine Carla Kangaloo are of Indian origin, women, and lawyers, who take pride in their Indian roots and describe themselves as 'daughters of India.' She said, 'I'm told that currently both the President and Prime Minister are of Indian origin, incidentally, both are women, both are lawyers, and both have a deep sense of pride in their Indian roots and heritage, and describe themselves as daughters of India...' 'The entire Indian community in Trinidad and Tobago is very enthusiastic about the upcoming visit of PM Modi, and a large diaspora interaction event is being planned during the visit,' the MEA Secretary said. During his visit, PM Modi will hold high-level discussions with both the President and the Prime Minister, and the leaders are expected to cover the entire gamut of our bilateral relations, as well as regional and multilateral aspects. The Trinidad and Tobago PM will also host a dinner for PM Modi. 'India's development partnership with Trinidad and Tobago is robust and diverse. It includes capacity-building initiatives, grant-based projects, and health care initiatives,' the MEA Secretary said. 'Both sides are now seeking to expand and diversify our cooperation into emerging areas, such as pharmaceuticals, tertiary care, renewable energy, digital public infrastructure, agriculture, and disaster resilience, in addition to innovation and technology,' she said. India and Trinidad and Tobago will also continue to focus on 'sports, academic, and cultural cooperation. A set of bilateral documents in different areas of cooperation is expected to be signed,' said Malhotra 'In a special gesture, PM Modi will also address the joint session of the Parliament of Tindad and Tobago. The visit is expected to strengthen the bilateral partnership across key areas,' the MEA official said. Trinidad and Tobago President Christine Carla Kangaloo had attended through video conferencing the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas (PBD) in Bhubaneswar as the Chief Guest, and delivered an address on the occasion. She was conferred with Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award (PBSA) at the National Day Reception organized by the High Commission of India in Trinidad and Tobago Mission on January 26 this year. During her address at the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, Kangaloo emphasised the deep-rooted ties between India and Trinidad and Tobago and highlighted that India was among the first countries to establish diplomatic relations with Trinidad and Tobago after its independence in 1962.
