'They failed to stop Pahalgam': TMC's Kunal Ghosh targets BJP over 'provocative politics' on Murshidabad violence
Kunal Ghosh
on Wednesday accused the BJP of playing "dirty and provocative politics" over the
Murshidabad violence
that erupted in April. Ghosh contrasted this with the
Pahalgam terror attack
claiming that the "BJP couldn't stop the attack by extremists" whereas, the TMC was playing the role of a "responsible opposition".
"BJP could not stop an attack by extremists in Pahalgam, but TMC and West Bengal Government are playing the role of responsible Opposition. An all-party delegation is going abroad, Abhishek Banerjee is a party of that delegation. So, in such times, what Amit Malviya and other BJP leaders are doing over Murshidabad is a dirty and provocative politics," Ghosh said.

He praised West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee and the state administration for taking swift action.
"After that, CM Mamata Banerjee, Police and Administration did whatever had to be done. Criminals were caught and the process is ongoing. Compensation is being provided to families of the deceased and injured, families whose houses or shops were damaged. Government has done it."
Referring to allegations that outsiders may have instigated the violence, Ghosh said, "Whether people came from outside the borders or from other places to plan all this, investigation is being done on all such indications."
Speaking on the report by a three-member committee appointed by the Calcutta high court on the Murshidabad violence, Ghosh said that party "will analyse and then speak on it".
The report highlighted significant lapses by local authorities in West Bengal regarding the anti-Waqf protests in Murshidabad that escalated into violence. The committee's findings revealed that the "main attack" occurred on April 11, with local police failing to take action or intervene.
It also accused a local councillor of orchestrating the violence in Dhulian town.
The high court, on April 17, directed the formation of a committee to assist in identifying and rehabilitating those displaced by the violence. During the unrest over the Waqf Act, a father and son, Harogobindo Das and Chandan Das, were found brutally murdered in Shamsherganj's Jafrabad area.
The report, submitted by Joginder Singh, Satya Arnab Ghosal, and Saugata Chakraborty, also stressed the need for tailored rehabilitation packages for victims. It noted widespread mob violence in Murshidabad between April 8 and 12, with central forces eventually deployed to restore order.
The violence sparked political controversy, with BJP accusing the attacks of targeting "Hindu families", while CM Mamata Banerjee claimed the violence was "orchestrated and planned".

After Maharashtra, Rahul Gandhi's Electoral Theft In Madhya Pradesh Claim
Bhopal: Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Monday alleged electoral theft in Madhya Pradesh, a month after he accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of orchestrating a "match-fixing" in the 2024 Maharashtra assembly elections. In a fiery-charged virtual address at the Congress's Nav Sankalp Shivir in Madhya Pradesh's Mandu, Mr Gandhi also questioned the credibility of the Maharashtra elections and claimed that over one crore new voters mysteriously appeared in the voter rolls. "Let me say this without a shadow of doubt, Maharashtra's election was stolen. The Election Commission is helping the BJP in full capacity," he charged, alleging institutional bias at the highest levels. जननायक श्री @RahulGandhi जी आज मांडव में जारी नव संकल्प शिविर में वर्चुअल माध्यम से जुड़े और सभी विधायकगणों को संबोधित किया. — MP Congress (@INCMP) July 21, 2025 Drawing a parallel to his party's experience in Madhya Pradesh, Mr Gandhi added, "I believe the last Madhya Pradesh election was stolen too, not once, but repeatedly. Just like Maharashtra. We must stay vigilant." In the 2023 assembly elections, the BJP bagged 163 of the 230 seats to retain power in the central state. The Congress could manage 66 assembly segments. The BJP also swept the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Madhya Pradesh by winning all 29 seats in the state. Mr Gandhi also alleged a systemic suppression of the backward and marginalised communities. "The Congress must fight for 95% of India's population, Dalits, Adivasis, OBCs, minorities, and the poor from the general category. We must become their voice," he said. He also emphasised unity and mutual respect within the party, urging cadres to learn from the experience of senior leaders and to carry the Congress's message of caste census to every household. Reiterating the party's stand on caste-based census, he declared, "If Congress forms the government in Madhya Pradesh, we will immediately carry out a caste census. We will ensure proportional representation for Dalits, Adivasis, OBCs, and women in government jobs." He also questioned the BJP's resistance to caste-based data. "Why is the BJP afraid of data? Why does the RSS oppose the caste census? Because within that data lies the truth, the truth of exploitation of Dalits, backwards classes, and even the poor among the general category." He cited the Telangana caste survey as a model and pledged to implement similar surveys in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh when the Congress forms a government. "I've said this in Parliament, we will break down the 50% reservation wall. The RSS and BJP are scared now. They once boasted of getting 400 seats to change the Constitution. But it was Congress, through Bharat Jodo Yatra and Nyay Yatra, that forced them to talk about caste census," he said.

Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt Says Turning Off Phones Is the Key to Regaining Focus
New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu accepted the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar from the post of Vice President of India on Tuesday. The letter has been forwarded to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), and soon an official notification will be issued. This was announced during the Rajya Sabha proceedings, when BJP MP Ghanshyam Tiwari, who was in the Chair, said that Dhankhar's resignation as the Vice President has been accepted. Tiwari also said that the Ministry of Home Affairs has "conveyed resignation of Vice President of India Jagdeep Dhankhar under Article 67A of the Constitution with immediate effect". Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended good wishes to Dhankhar. The PM wrote on X, "Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar Ji has got many opportunities to serve our country in various capacities, including as the Vice President of India. Wishing him good health." The PM's post came at a time when the opposition has been raising questions about Dhankhar's sudden resignation. Dhankhar, who served as the 14th Vice President of India since August 2022, stepped down on July 21 -- the very first day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament -- citing health concerns. On July 16, 2022, the BJP announced Dhankhar as the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate for Vice President. In the Vice Presidential election held on August 6, 2022, Dhankhar defeated opposition candidate Margaret Alva with 528 out of 710 valid votes, securing 74.37 per cent -- the highest margin of victory since 1992. As Vice President, Dhankhar also served as the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, where he presided over several key legislative sessions. Known for his strict adherence to parliamentary rules and no-nonsense approach, he was both respected and contested in equal measure across party lines. Jagdeep Dhankhar, a seasoned politician and constitutional expert, was seen by many as a firm yet fair presiding officer of the Rajya Sabha. He had been hospitalised multiple times over the past year for health concerns, most recently in Nainital. The exact nature of his illness has not been disclosed. In his resignation letter to President Droupadi Murmu, Dhankhar cited health concerns. He invoked Article 67(a) of the Indian Constitution, which provides for the resignation of the Vice President. Jagdeep Dhankhar's resignation has triggered the constitutional process to elect a new Vice President of India, say experts. Since the Vice President also serves as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, the post cannot remain vacant for long, according to the experts.
