Respect religious sensitivities, refrain from commenting on qurban
He said the sacrificial ritual in Malaysia has always adhered to Islamic rulings (syarak) and is closely monitored by the relevant authorities to ensure that all slaughtering procedures are conducted in accordance with religious and legal requirements.
'I advise everyone, be it celebrities or the general public, to be cautious when making public comments. Please avoid making statements on this issue.
'The qurban ritual has been practised for a long time without controversy, and now it is suddenly being questioned. Let's not reignite this matter,' he told reporters after officiating the 'Peduli Komuniti Madani' Carnival (KAPKOM) 2025 at Kampung Orang Asli Bumiputera Dalam in Rengit, here, today.
He was responding to a recent statement made by former Miss World Malaysia 2009, Thanuja Ananthan, who questioned the practice of animal slaughter during the Hari Raya Aidiladha celebrations.
Zulkifli further stressed that qurban should be carried out with sincerity and in full compliance with Islamic guidelines.
KAPKOM aims to engage local communities, including the underprivileged, the poor, and the Orang Asli community, in line with the aspirations of Malaysia MADANI. Activities during the event included qurban rituals, animal slaughter demonstrations and the Smart Solat Workshop.

Anwar: Finance Ministry to enhance pondok education system to meet current needs
PUTRAJAYA — The Ministry of Finance (Treasury) has been instructed to explore ways to enhance the capabilities of pondok institutions, including upgrading existing facilities and improving the curriculum to better align with current needs. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the move is crucial to ensure students are not only grounded in religious knowledge but also equipped to face contemporary challenges, Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, gave his assurance that the traditional religious syllabus will remain intact. However, it will be complemented with elements such as Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), technology, and artificial intelligence (AI). 'We will not interfere with the existing syllabus of pondok institutions, but we will incorporate new components such as TVET and AI. 'It is not about changing the system, but to complement and enhance it with elements that reflect current demands,' he said during a gathering with staff of the Prime Minister's Department here today. The Prime Minister emphasised that the government's efforts to strengthen pondok institutions through upgraded infrastructure and an improved curriculum should not be politicised, as they are sincere initiatives to ensure students are not left behind in the national mainstream. He said the move is made purely in the public interest, without any political agenda. 'Insya-Allah, I will contact Syeikh Wazir Che Awang Al-Makki Hafizahullah (Jabhah Pondok Kelantan deputy chairman) to accept his invitation to visit his pondok. This has nothing to do with politics. We should not be so tied to political views that we fail to recognise the greater good,' he said. As an example, Anwar said the government had already started efforts to empower huffaz (Quran memorisers) by providing TVET education to 12,500 students in their respective institutions 'This is a significant number. Imagine the impact if this approach continues — it would offer our children greater exposure,' he said. Anwar also commended the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) and its agencies, led by Minister Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar, for organising the 2025 Muzakarah Umara' dan Ulama' Pondok Kebangsaan (UMRAN) and Malaysia Bermunajat programmes last Saturday. He described both events as important platforms for strengthening ties between religious scholars and national leaders in advancing the MADANI policy framework. 'They also serve as a space to hear the views and advice of the ulama, ensuring that efforts to promote Islamic understanding and activities in the country remain in line with Islamic principles,' he said. Top cop fired over 2019 Easter Sunday bombings
THE country's independent regulator has sacked a senior police officer for failing to prevent the 2019 Easter Sunday bombings, which killed 279 people including 45 foreigners. The National Police Commission dismissed Nilantha Jayawardena, then head of the State Intelligence Service (SIS), for disregarding prior warnings of an impending attack by Islamic extremists. Court records show that Jayawardena had been alerted to a possible terror strike 17 days before the coordinated suicide attacks on April 21, 2019, which targeted three hotels and three churches. More than 500 people were also wounded in the bombings. Jayawardena had been found guilty on all seven counts of negligence and dereliction of duty by a disciplinary inquiry led by a retired judge, the police commission said late Saturday. 'Considering the gravity of the charges, the Commission decided to give him the maximum punishment,' the statement said. Following the Easter bombings, Sri Lanka's worst terror attack on civilians, Jayawardena was removed from his position as SIS chief but elevated to the role of deputy head of the police force, overseeing administration. However, he was placed on compulsory leave a year ago, pending a disciplinary hearing, after repeated judicial orders to take action against him. A top-level investigation initiated shortly after the attack found that then-president Maithripala Sirisena and four of his senior officials, including Jayawardena, should face criminal prosecution for their lapses. In accordance with Supreme Court orders issued in January 2023 following a civil case, they have paid just over US$1mil in damages to the victims. The 2019 bombings were blamed on a local group that pledged allegiance to the Islamic State. Sri Lanka's new government, under President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, has vowed to step up investigations into the Easter attacks and uncover those responsible for the bombings. — AFP

Kelantan Ulama expresses support for Anwar's leadership
Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim PUTRAJAYA (July 20): Deputy chairman of Jabhah Pondok Kelantan Syeikh Wazir Che Awang Al-Makki Hafizahullah has expressed full support for the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and called for the continuation of the Anwar-led MADANI government. He said the religious scholars would continue to support the Prime Minister and were ready to assist in overcoming any challenges during his administration. 'We fully support the leadership of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. God willing, we stand behind him. 'All the obstacles and challenges in this country can be overcome. Malaysia can be saved, and the government under Datuk Seri's leadership can be preserved,' he said when speaking at the 'Malaysia Bermunajat 2025' programme at Putra Mosque here last night. The programme, attended by Anwar and thousands of congregants, aimed to enliven the culture of 'munajat' (supplication) and appreciation of knowledge as the foundation for uniting the ummah and building a society grounded in Malaysian MADANI values. Meanwhile, Syeikh Wazir said frequent changes in government within short periods were not encouraged in Islam, and suggested that a good administration be maintained for up to 10 years so that the people could benefit from it. 'In Malaysia, we see governments changing every five years, two years, or even after one year, resulting in shifting policies, the decline of religious schools, and a decline in all areas, (including) the economy. This is not the Islamic way,' he said.
