Parents Face Charges After Driver Kills 7-Year-Old Crossing The Street
Jessica Ivey, the mother of 7-year-old Legend Jenkins, told WSOC-TVbefore her arrest that she had allowed the boys to walk to a grocery store two blocks away from their home in Gastonia, North Carolina, on May 27.
A 76-year-old woman driving a Jeep Cherokee hit the younger boy just before 6 p.m. as he was trying to cross a four-lane road, the Gastonia Police Department said in a press release. He died in a hospital hours after the accident from his injuries.
Legend's mother and father, Samuele Jenkins, were charged with felony involuntary manslaughter and child neglect in the 7-year-old's death. They also face a misdemeanor charge of child neglect. Records show they are being held in Gaston County Jail on $150,000 bond each.
'While the Gastonia Police Department offers its deepest sympathies to the family for the heartbreaking loss of their child, the investigation revealed that the children involved were unsupervised at the time the boy stepped into traffic,' police wrote in the release. 'In such cases, adults must be held accountable for their responsibilities to ensure a safe environment for their children.'
The Gastonia police department has received massive backlash following news of the parents' arrests, with numerous people expressing their outrage on social media. The department declined to comment on the controversy.
The 76-year-old driver who struck Legend with her vehicle has not been charged. Police said there was no evidence of wrongdoing, noting that she was not speeding and is cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
Legend's grieving mother believes the woman's driving privileges should be revoked.
'It's hard, I haven't stopped crying; my husband hasn't stopped crying,' she told WSOC-TV. 'Honestly, I want justice for my baby. She shouldn't still be able to drive.'

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates -- DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Unknown attackers launched a gun and grenade attack on a court building in southeast Iran Saturday, killing six people including a child and wounding 20, state TV reported. The report said security forces killed three of the gunmen in the armed clash in the country's restive southern province of Sistan and Baluchestan. It did not identify any of the victims. State TV said the attack happened in the province's capital city of Zahedan. Police and security forces immediately took control of the site, 1,130 kilometers or 700 miles southeast of the capital, Tehran. A report by the semiofficial Tasnim news agency, believed to be close to security forces, blamed the attack on the militant group Jaish al-Adl, which wants independence for Iran's eastern Sistan and Pakistan's southwestern Baluchistan provinces. Feds charge SoCal medical workers with interfering in ICE raid
Two staff members from an Ontario surgery center have been charged with allegedly interfering with U.S. immigration officers trying to detain landscapers who ran into the center to escape. Jose de Jesus Ortega, a 38-year-old Highland resident, was arrested Friday morning and is expected to appear in U.S. District Court in Riverside, according to a U.S. attorney's office Central District of California news release. Officials are still looking for the other suspect, Danielle Nadine Davila, 33, of Corona. Both are charged with assaulting a federal officer and conspiracy to prevent by force and intimidation a federal officer from discharging his duties, authorities said. According to video obtained by KTLA-TV, staffers at the Ontario Advanced Surgical Center earlier this month told two agents to leave because they didn't have a warrant to go onto the property. The agents with Immigration and Customs Enforcement were trying to detain 30-year-old Denis Guillen-Solis and two other landscapers who had been working outside and ran into the surgical center when the agents showed up. In the video, Guillen-Solis is shown holding onto the doorway at the surgical center and asking the agents to present identification. The agents then pulled Guillen-Solis from the doorway and detained him. 'The illegal alien arrested inside the surgery center was not a patient. He ran inside for cover and these defendants attempted to block his apprehension by assaulting our agents," said U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli in a statement. According to an affidavit, the two ICE agents wore government-issued equipment, including vests and were using unmarked government-operated vehicles when they conducted their operations. The agents followed a truck with three men inside and approached them after the men exited the truck in the parking lot of the surgery center, according to the release. Two of the men ran away and one of them, an alleged undocumented immigrant from Honduras, was detained near the surgery center's front entrance and tried to pull away, causing the ICE officer to fall to the ground. A medical staffer helped the man off the ground and pulled him away from the officer, according to the news release. The man went into the surgery center and was chased by the ICE agent, who eventually stopped him. The incident occurred amid an extraordinary immigration enforcement effort by the Trump administration in Southern California. Rapper GloRilla arrested on drug charges after burglary at Georgia home
Rapper GloRilla has been arrested in Georgia after cops found a 'significant amount' of drugs while investigating a burglary at her metro Atlanta home. Authorities were called to the rapper's house at around 1:30 a.m. on Saturday to investigate a break-in, the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office confirmed to local ABC affiliate WSB-TV. The 'Let Her Cook' artist, who's legal name is Gloria Woods, was away in Indianapolis for the WNBA All-Star Game at the time of the incident, but a family member inside her home fired a gun at the burglars, causing them to run away, according to police. During the investigation, cops smelled a 'strong odor consistent with illegal narcotics' in a closet inside the home's primary bedroom. A drug task force was called in, after which 'a significant amount of marijuana was discovered in plain view,' according to the sheriff's office. After voluntarily turning herself in to the Forsyth County Jail on Tuesday, the 25-year-old rapper was charged with felony possession of marijuana and possession of a controlled substance. She was released the same day on $22,260 bond. Attorneys for GloRilla have slammed local law enforcement following the incident, calling their client 'a victim, not a suspect.' 'The arrest of Gloria Woods is a disturbing window into how warped law enforcement priorities have become,' her lawyers said in a statement to TMZ. 'Instead of investigating the violent home invasion and theft at Ms. Woods' home, they instead sought a search warrant when they spotted what they believed was a small amount of marijuana.
