62 years of healing: PGI geared up for landmark Institute Foundation Day
The institute will host Dr Rajiv Bahl, Secretary to the Government of India, Department of Health Research and Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research, as the chief guest, and he will deliver the keynote address, 'Creating more physicians, scientists and innovators in leading medical institutes'.
A distinguished physician-scientist specialising in paediatrics and public health, Dr Bahl has been a leading figure in maternal and child health research for over 30 years. His work has supported multi-country research in Asia and Africa, and has strengthened research capacity across more than 50 institutions worldwide.
Joining him as the guest of honour is Dr D Behera, Professor Emeritus at PGIM and president of the National Academy of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. With over 40 years of experience, Dr Behera is a renowned respiratory specialist, former dean at PGIMER, and a leader in lung cancer research. Founded in 1961 with the concurrence of the Planning Commission, PGIMER commenced operations in 1962 and was formally inaugurated on July 7, 1963, by the then prime minister Pt Jawaharlal Nehru. Recognised as an institute of national importance in 1967, PGIMER Chandigarh has been at the forefront of medical innovation and patient care, contributing to national health initiatives under the aegis of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
Spanning an expansive area of 277 acres, the institute is a hub of medical excellence with a dedicated workforce of 11,847 employees, including 728 esteemed faculty members and around 1,300 academic resident doctors across 47 specialised departments and 10 centres of excellence.
The institute has a capacity of 2,233 beds, including 207 ICU beds and 73 operating theatres, facilitating comprehensive healthcare services. Annually, PGI caters to approximately 10,000 outpatient visits daily, totalling around three million visits, with 200,000 admissions for both long-term and day-care treatments, alongside 80,000 surgeries encompassing major and minor procedures. The paediatric emergency services handle about 10,000 cases annually, supported by a Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) admitting 800 patients per year.
The institute offers services across 160 specialities and super-specialities, supported by numerous laboratories and advanced diagnostic facilities. Its commitment to continuously upgrading technology is reflected in the availability of cutting-edge equipment such as a 384-slice dual-source CT scan, advanced PET and CT facilities, metabolic and genetic laboratories, vascular intervention labs, and MRI machines.
Patient care remains the institute's top priority, guided by the motto, 'Service with Sacrifice.' Its commitment to accessible healthcare is reflected in its extensive outreach through government schemes such as Ayushman Bharat, benefiting over 1.55 lakh beneficiaries.

New Delhi [India], July 5 (ANI): Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Saturday hailed India's healthcare system as being qualitative, accessible and affordable, highlighting the country's significant strides in medical infrastructure and service delivery, according to an official statement. Speaking at the 7th Annual International Conference of Innovative Physicians Forum - IPF MEDICON 2025, Birla highlighted that India has successfully enhanced the quality of healthcare while ensuring that it remains within the reach of every citizen. He also noted the initiatives in the healthcare sector that have made services more inclusive and patient-centric. Lauding the progress made in health outreach, digital health technologies, and affordable treatment options, Om Birla affirmed India's commitment to building a robust and equitable healthcare ecosystem, according to the statement. 'Today, even as developed countries face growing health challenges, Indian doctors are enhancing their global reputation by embracing innovation and cutting-edge technologies,' Birla said, according to the statement. The Lok Sabha Speaker noted that the reputation and quality of Indian doctors have earned recognition worldwide, adding that despite limited resources, the dedication, service, and sacrifice of doctors, paramedical staff and healthcare workers have enabled India to manage the COVID-19 global pandemic and provide successful treatment effectively. He further underlined that this is a true testament to the credibility of India's healthcare system. The Lok Sabha Speaker noted that India is developing as a centre for pharmaceuticals and medical research, mentioning advancements in drug manufacturing, vaccine production, and biomedical research within the country. He was happy to note that India has positioned itself as a key player on the international stage. 'India's skilled scientists, solid research infrastructure, and focus on innovation are advancing healthcare for both local and global needs. He noted that initiatives promoting R and D and collaboration with international institutions are further strengthening India's role in shaping the future of global health,' Birla said. In this context, Birla also mentioned that the Government of India is making serious efforts in the health sector. Rs 48 crore boost to maternal and child healthcare in rural Karnataka
Infosys Foundation, the philanthropic and CSR arm of Infosys, on Friday announced its collaboration with Prashanthi Balamandira Trust, a UN-recognized organization that provides education, healthcare, nutrition, and community service free of charge in Karnataka. This collaboration will support the Sri Sathya Sai Sarla Memorial Hospi-tal, a multi-specialty teaching hospital under the auspices of Sri Madhusudan Sai In-stitute of Medical Sciences and Research (SMSIMSR), to provide free medical care to underprivileged women and infants and children, enhancing access to quality ma-ternal and child healthcare in rural Karnataka. Through this collaboration, the Infosys Foundation has pledged a grant of over INR 48 crore to augment healthcare infrastructure and facilities in maternal and childcare services. This includes advanced medical equipment for obstetrics and gynecology, as well as to enhance medical facilities of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), Intensive Care Unit (ICU), diagnostic radiology, and Operation Theatre (OT). A portion of the grant will also cover operational costs. This initiative is expected to benefit over 8,000 deserving individuals annually by en-suring timely medical interventions and specialized care, absolutely free of charge. The Sri Sathya Sai Sarla Memorial Hospital will offer services including comprehen-sive maternity care, pediatric care, gynecological procedures, pediatric cardiac cathe-terization interventions, and pediatric cardiac surgeries. By improving access to these essential and critical services to the underserved communities, this collaboration aims to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates in the region. The Founder SMSIMSR and Trustee Prashanthi Balamandira Trust, Sri Madhusudan Sai said, 'This benevolent collaboration with the esteemed Infosys Foundation has allowed us to strengthen critical mother and child health services at Sri Sathya Sai Sarla Memorial Hospital ensuring that even the most vulnerable and underprivileged receive the care they deserve. Also, the hospital being a teaching institution, the add-ed equipment will enable training and upskilling the doctors, both undergraduate and postgraduate, and also nursing and allied healthcare trainees, in turn contributing to capacity building in healthcare services.
