Ottawa police announce 50 new charges against accused human trafficker
The Ottawa Police Service has announced more than 50 new charges against a man accused of human trafficking.
Anthony Badibanga-Mukendi, 27, was arrested in March and charged with a list of offences, including trafficking in persons by exercising control, getting material benefit from sexual services, uttering threats, assault, forcible confinement, advertising another person's sexual services, publishing an intimate image, and withholding travel or identity documents.
In a news release Monday, police say additional charges were laid as victims came forward.
'We commend the courage of victims who have come forward and contributed vital information to this investigation. Detectives from the Human Trafficking Unit believe that there may be more individuals who have yet to speak with police,' Ottawa police said.
'The Ottawa Police Service respects victims' decisions regarding whether to pursue criminal charges and can provide support resources regardless of their choice. We remain committed to ensuring a thorough and compassionate investigative process and to supporting all victims through. Reporting these incidents is crucial in helping investigators identify suspects and track crime trends.'
Police say Badibanga-Mukendi used several aliases, including Marty, Anton, Tony, Jay, Tighten Tones, and Tones. He is believed to have travelled across Canada and has allegedly been involved in human trafficking for several years, according to police. Police also allege he has been involved in other crimes, including intimate partner violence.

Police issue arrest warrant for suspect in Yonge and Dundas stabbing

Man killed in head-on collision between tractor trailer, pickup truck
A 46-year-old man was killed in a head-on collision between a tractor-trailer and a pickup truck south of Casselman Tuesday afternoon, according to Ontario Provincial Police (OPP). Police said they responded to the collision on County Road 43 in Finch around 4:20 p.m. The unnamed man from Kemptville who was driving the pickup truck was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured, OPP said on social media.. An investigation is ongoing and police are asking for information about it, especially footage, The crash happened about 17 kilometres south of Casselman and 60 kilometres southeast of downtown Ottawa.

2 people shot in Winnipeg, sent to hospital in unstable condition
Social Sharing Two people were sent to hospital in unstable condition Tuesday afternoon after being shot in Winnipeg's St. James area. Police were called just before 3 p.m. but offered few details about the incident. They said nothing about the ages or sex of the victims, or if they are wildfire evacuees. "It's still in the early stages of the investigation and I don't have that information," Const. Stephen Spencer said. "They're still collecting evidence and video, talking to witnesses." Officers and investigators were seen on Tuesday going in and out of the Airport Motor Inn at the corner of Ellice Avenue and Berry Street, and police tape was stretched across the road at one end of the hotel. Spencer wouldn't confirm that's where the shooting occurred, only that it was the 1800 block of Ellice. The address of the Airport Motor Inn is 1800 Ellice. Spencer wouldn't say if the shooting happened inside or outside and had no information on the condition of the victims as of Wednesday morning. Thousands of people have been displaced from northern Manitoba due to wildfires with many being set up in hotels around Winnipeg, particularly those around the airport. Winnipeg police have previously said they are deploying extra officers to visit the shelters and hotels where evacuees are staying after concerns were raised by First Nations organizations about safety. Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak, the organization that represents 26 northern Manitoba First Nations, said in a statement last week it is deeply concerned about the reports of drug trafficking in areas where evacuees are staying.
