Sebastian Hansen inspired Technoblade tribute in Minecraft movie, confirms director Jared Hess

Express Tribune06-04-2025
The upcoming Minecraft movie pays a heartfelt tribute to late YouTuber Technoblade, and fans have actor Sebastian Hansen to thank.
According to director Jared Hess, the tribute was not initially part of the script but was added after Hansen suggested the idea during production.
In an interview with Collider, Hess revealed that Hansen approached him early in filming, expressing his admiration for Technoblade, a legendary Minecraft content creator who passed away in 2022. 'He was like, 'Look, there's this amazing Minecraft player named Technoblade who passed away, and I would love to be able to honor him somehow in the film,'' Hess recalled.
Taking Hansen's heartfelt request seriously, the filmmakers included a subtle but meaningful Easter egg in the movie—a pig wearing a crown—an unmistakable nod to Technoblade's famous Minecraft avatar. The tribute appears in one of the village scenes, and while it's a quiet moment, it carries significant emotional weight for longtime fans of the game and the creator.
This decision highlights not only the influence Technoblade had on the Minecraft community but also the passion and respect the young cast brought to the project. With Minecraft: The Movie hitting theaters on April 4, 2025, audiences will get to experience the tribute themselves—and for many, it will serve as a powerful reminder of Technoblade's enduring legacy.
The movie stars Emma Myers, Sebastian Hansen, Jason Momoa, Jack Black, and Danielle Brooks, and is directed by Jared Hess, best known for Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre.

James Gunn reinvents Superman with hopeful tone, nostalgic design, and emotionally grounded storytelling

James Gunn is reinventing Superman for a new generation, and early signs point to a heartfelt, visually rich reintroduction of the Man of Steel. With David Corenswet donning the cape and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, this reboot marks the first major step in Gunn's vision for the new DC Universe. Set in a bright, timeless version of Metropolis, Superman opens with its hero already mid-battle—a deliberate choice that reflects Gunn's desire to drop audiences into a fully realized world. Executive producer Chantal Nong describes Corenswet's Superman as a kind, selfless figure—more grounded than godlike, and deeply human in his values. Beyond the action, the film is rich in detail. Production designer Beth Mickle revealed nearly 100 Easter eggs are tucked into the film's sets, from Daily Planet nods to comic-book deep cuts. Even Superman's Fortress of Solitude takes inspiration from Avatar: The Way of Water—a blend of crystal architecture and kinetic water imagery. 'We wanted to make it a place where he lives, researches, even keeps a zoo,' Mickle said, referencing the Silver Age comics. While Superman's side brings warmth and optimism, his nemesis Lex Luthor, played by Nicholas Hoult, adds a layer of calculated menace. Hoult's Luthor is a sleek, modern-day tech mogul with a public persona that hides his villainy. 'He's not just evil—he truly believes he's protecting humanity,' Hoult said. According to Brosnahan, Superman isn't just another superhero movie—it's a 'shot in the arm of hope.' Corenswet adds that playing Clark Kent is just as rewarding as being Superman: 'You always have a secret. That's always fun as an actor.' Superman lands in theaters on July 11, setting the tone for the new DCU—and possibly redefining a classic hero for years to come.

‘F1' film puts viewers in the driver's seat for a tale of second chances

LONDON: Brad Pitt is itching to return to the racing tracks after making 'F1', a movie that takes audiences into the action of real Formula One races and mixes in romance and humour. Directed and co-written by 'Top Gun: Maverick' filmmaker Joseph Kosinski, 'F1' was partly filmed during Formula One Grand Prix weekends, with scenes shot on the circuits during breaks and real drivers also appearing on screen. Pitt plays an unruly racer-for-hire, who returns to Formula One to help his friend's struggling team and mentor its rookie driver, played by Damson Idris. Pitt and Idris did their own driving in the movie, combining top speeds with acting. The aim for authenticity made the project physically testing for the two. 'It's real. You got to put in the neck exercises. And we're not even pulling the G's that the real guys are doing,' Pitt said at the film's European premiere in London on Monday. 'I was in the gym a lot. It was cold plunges afterwards just for recovery,' Pitt, 61, said. 'It's insane,' said Idris in an interview. 'You're driving up to 180 miles per hour sometimes. I have to say the lines at this specific place and I have to emote in a way that's going to translate through the eyes at those speeds. When you watch the film, you feel you're driving as a viewer, and that was our intention.' Getting the balance right for viewers with varying levels of familiarity with the sport was also key, said Kosinski. 'If you're a diehard Formula One fan, you're going to find some Easter eggs, you're going to recognise some historical stuff that I think will be interesting. But we also designed the movie so that if you know nothing about Formula One, if you have no interest in motor sports whatsoever, this is just a great story about second chances, teamwork and friendship,' he said. Monday's premiere came just days after Pitt got to drive a Formula One car for real after testing a McLaren at Austin's Circuit of the Americas. The cars used in the film were Formula Two cars, modified to look like real grand prix racers. 'Ask me how fast I went. Three mph short of 200 mph,' Pitt said of the experience. 'I want to go back. I want to hit 200.' 'F1' begins its global cinematic rollout on June 25.

Hytale cancelled: Riot Games announce layoffs as Hytale gets cancelled after 7 years of development

Riot Games has officially cancelled development of the long-delayed sandbox RPG Hytale and will begin the process of closing Hypixel Studios, the team behind the project. The decision was confirmed by Hypixel co-founder Aaron "Noxy" Donaghey, who described it as a difficult outcome for both the studio and its parent company. 'This isn't the conclusion we had hoped for,' Donaghey said in a public statement. 'Despite years of iteration, technical overhauls and strategic reviews, we ultimately couldn't find a version of Hytale that delivered on its original promise.' Originally unveiled in 2018, Hytale had been in development for several years before being acquired by Riot in 2020. The game had attracted attention for its blocky aesthetic and sandbox structure reminiscent of Minecraft, but never reached a playable release. Target launch windows in 2021 and later 2023 were repeatedly delayed as the studio reworked its ambitions and engine. Over time, the project grew increasingly complex. As the genre evolved, internal expectations reportedly shifted, and the development roadmap became harder to follow. 'The further we went, the more we realised the scope required significant compromises,' Donaghey said. 'None of those options would have produced the experience we envisioned.' This was the Official Hytale - Announcement Trailer released on the December 13th 2018! 📅 The video has over 61 million views, the community waited years! for the game which sadly will never come! — Scott (ECKOSOLDIER) (@eckoxsoldier) June 23, 2025 Efforts to reduce features, change timelines or scale back the project were ultimately deemed incompatible with the creative identity of the game. According to the studio, Riot also explored the possibility of finding a third-party investor or buyer to continue development, but no viable path was found. Hypixel Studios employed over 70 staff globally, though the exact number of redundancies has not been disclosed. Riot is said to be offering severance packages and transition support to affected employees. While Hytale will not continue, the original Hypixel Minecraft server — operated separately from the studio — will remain online and unaffected. The cancellation arrives amid a challenging period for the games industry. Layoffs across multiple studios have persisted through 2025, continuing a trend from previous years. Donaghey closed by expressing pride in the team's work and gratitude for Riot's support: 'Although we're closing this chapter, the ideas and spirit behind Hytale remain with us. What we built wasn't wasted — the lessons will carry forward.'
