Mighty PSG sets sights on another trophy with a dominating win over Messi's Inter Miami

Associated Press14 hours ago

ATLANTA (AP) — Paris Saint-Germain left no doubt it was Europe's top club with a historic victory in the Champions League.
Now, PSG is intent on conquering the world.
Les Rouge-et-Bleu turned in a dominating performance at the Club World Cup on Sunday, brushing aside Lionel Messi and Inter Miami with a first-half blitz that resulted in a 4-0 victory.
While the European powerhouses complained mightily about having to play in the newly expanded tournament at the end of a grueling season, PSG is taking the 32-team competition seriously.
Outside of a 1-0 loss to Brazilian club Botafogo in group play, PSG has won three games by a cumulative 10-0 since arriving in the United States.
'It's clear that this is a historic season for us. We intend to continue making history with this competition,' PSG coach Luis Enrique said through an interpreter. 'We're fighting to claim silverware. This season is very long for all the teams. But we're excited to be here.'
PSG advanced to the quarterfinals, where it will face either Bayern Munich or Brazilian club Flamengo next Saturday in Atlanta.
There was a huge buildup to the game against Messi, who played two seasons at PSG before making the move to South Florida in the twilight of his brilliant career and was facing his former coach at Barcelona.
But even with an eight-time Ballon d'Or winner leading the way, the club from Major League Soccer was simply no match for a deep, talented squad that routed Inter Milan 5-0 in the Champions League final a month ago.
João Neves scored a pair of goals for PSG, setting the tone with a header off a free kick just six minutes into the match.
He scored again in the 39th, and Inter Miami totally fell apart in the closing minutes of the opening half. Tomás Avilés gave up an own-goal on a cross in front of the net, and Achraf Hakimi added to his brilliant campaign with another tally in stoppage time.
With a four-goal cushion at the break, PSG could start looking ahead to its next match.
'We will play our game no matter who is against us,' Neves said. 'We are confident.'
Messi barely touched the ball in the first half as the Herons struggled mightily just to get across the just to get across the halfway line.
The pink-clad fans in the crowd of 65,574 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium tried to stir the underdogs with occasional chants of 'Messi! Messi! Messi!' but it did little good.
PSG was simply too good.
'With their youthful players and high caliber and an amazing coach, they didn't let us relax for one second,' Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano said through an interpreter. 'I feel like this is a team that will be remembered.'
In another encouraging sign for PSG, French star Ousmane Dembélé got his first action of the tournament after sustaining a left quadriceps injury while on duty with the national team. He came on a substitute for Neves in the 62nd minute.
'It is very important for us to have injured players come back into the fold,' Enrique said. 'We have to focus on our goals and get our players back.'
Especially when there's another trophy within reach.

2025/26 Serie A winner odds: Inter just ahead of defending champions Napoli

Last season was an extraordinary Serie A campaign that saw Napoli emerge triumphant for the second time in three years. In 2022/23, they won the title for the first time since the days of Diego Maradona and yet their defence was disastrous and resulted in a tenth-place finish, 41 points behind eventual champions Inter, the following season. With Napoli not in Europe, new manager Antonio Conte prioritised the league above all else last term and the result was a remarkable return to the summit of Italian football thanks to the heroics of Scott McTominay and company. Advertisement Conte's side will have to navigate the Champions League alongside their push for the domestic title this time around. It could be far trickier than last season where they tended to play a match a week. Perhaps as a result of this, Betfair has Inter Milan as favourites to win the league (2/1), just ahead of Napoli (5/2). Napoli's case for winning again still has merit. McTominay and Billy Gilmour have been inspired signings from the Premier League in recent times and now Kevin De Bruyne, one of the game's modern greats, has arrived on a free transfer. Conte is clearly serious about challenging at home and in Europe. Inter Milan are following a season that promised much but ended in disappointment. Inter won the title in 2024 and were on course for the treble with a month remaining last campaign until the wheels came off, culminating in a 5-0 Champions League final demolition at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain. Inter had already been humbled in the Coppa Italia semifinals by rival AC Milan and allowed Napoli to reclaim the league title, meaning Inter failed to win a trophy after having a realistic chance at three. That remarkable Champions League run means the Nerazzurri have money to spend for the first time since the pandemic. More often than not in the last few years, Inter have needed to sell big names to balance the books and yet now there is a serious opportunity to bring in reinforcements and strengthen from an already solid position. Indeed, Rasmus Hojlund may well join from Manchester United after enduring a torrid time in the Premier League. Juventus (4/1) are the most successful club in the history of Italian football and yet they have gone five years without a domestic title and have failed to even finish in second place during that period. Fourth place and Champions League qualification last campaign would be seen as the bare minimum for supporters of one of the world's iconic sports teams. Advertisement Juventus are looking to bring in Manchester United's Jadon Sancho sooner rather than later. He is another player who's struggled to assert himself in the Premier League that might find things different in Italy. Sancho was terrific during his time in Germany and will hope to rejuvenate his stagnating career back on the continent. Massimiliano Allegri is back in charge of AC Milan after 11 years away. The hope amongst the fans is that he will do what he did last time he was in the hotseat and secure the Scudetto after what feels like an eternity. The Italian giants, one of the world's iconic clubs, have only won Serie A once since Allegri's last spell as a manager and finished in eighth place last term, a demoralising situation for supporters and players alike. Milan (11/2) will have no European commitments, something that proved a blessing in disguise for last season's champions, Napoli. The bookmakers have the Rossoneri as fourth-favourites to win Serie A and this is undoubtedly influenced by the expectation that they will splash the cash this summer. Sporting director Igli Tare has claimed Milan will sign at least five players this summer, including two full-backs and a centre-forward. Most significantly, one of the game's greats, Luka Modrić, has agreed to join from Real Madrid after the Club World Cup. No team would fail to benefit from the Croatian's expertise and experience, something that is reflected in the odds on Milan to win the title. It was a transitional season for Roma (11/1) that began under club legend Daniele De Rossi and finished under another club legend in Claudio Ranieri, who has retired to take on an advisory role within the club. Roma poached Gian Piero Gasperini from Atalanta to take over. The Giallorossi are fifth-favourites to win the league, something they haven't managed since way back in 2001. The difficulty for the club is that they need to make a significant sale sooner rather than later to balance the books and avoid falling foul of FFP regulations. Several Premier League sides are interested in left back Angeliño but he has thus far proven unhappy with the options. Time will tell if he relents. Atalanta (20/1) outperformed expectations and finished third last term but it looks as though they will suffer the fate of Bologna last summer and see some of their best players snapped up by wealthier clubs around Europe. Unsurprisingly, this means the bookmakers do not see the side emulating last season's heroics, let alone going all the way and winning their first-ever Scudetto. Indiana played the Dallas Wings on Friday without Clark, who was ruled out with a groin injury. Despite Clark being sidelined, the Fever played in front of a reported 20,409 fans, the largest crowd recorded for a professional women's basketball game in Texas. After a 94-86 victory over the Wings, Boston commented on the crowd and the consistent support for the Fever. "Every game is a home game," Boston said. "I think you see that. People show up, they show out. I think it's great for this league, just people continuing to watch games. I think when people show up to watch a game, they might have came for one person, but they leave liking many more." Parker spent 13 seasons playing for the Sparks after being drafted first overall in 2008 out of the University of Tennessee. Over her career in Los Angeles, she became one of the biggest names in the WNBA, winning two MVP awards and leading the Sparks to a championship in 2016.
