All-electric Porsche Taycan Turbo GT goes fastest once again
This Taycan has 580kW of power on tap which increases to 760kW during launch.
The ridiculously fast Porsche Taycan Turbo GT has just gone and added the Yas Marina Circuit to the growing list of global racetracks where it is officially the fastest production battery electric vehicle.
The record lap time of two minutes 7.247 seconds was set using the current 5.2km F1 GP World Championship circuit in Abu Dhabi.
Strict regulations
A new official lap record format from the Emirates Motorsport Organisation (EMSO) dictates that cars undergo strict scrutineering prior to track activity. This is done to ensure the cars are being run standard production car trim and specification.
On track activity is then limited to a 60-minute practice session, followed by a 45-minute qualifying session. It's during this qualifying session that the lap record time must be set.

UAE-based GT racing driver and instructor Ramez Azzam was the man behind the wheel of the Porsche Taycan for the record attempt.
'We all know electric vehicles can be fast in a straight line. To be fast over a whole lap is where the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT really shines,' said Azzam.
Eye-popping oomph
Using the expertise Porsche has developed from its championship-winning 99X Electric race car that competes in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, the Taycan Turbo GT is able to bring that technology to the street as the most powerful production Porsche ever. The car offers 580kW of power for normal use. But this number jumps up to a full 760kW with launch control activated.
An optional Weissach package is available for the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT. What this means for the man in the street is that there are no rear seats. There is also more carbon fibre and this in turn offers a better power-to-weight ratio. The Weissach package saves 75kg while a fixed rear wing provides extra downforce.
Porsche Taycan Turbo GT race-ready
The Porsche Taycan Turbo GT comes standard with lightweight ceramic brakes based on the Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake. The car is also equipped with the Dynamics Package that includes the Porsche Active Ride suspension with GT-specific tuning.
The Porsche Taycan Turbo GT is said to accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in just 2.2 seconds. And reach a top speed of 305km/h. If only The Citizen Motoring could get our hands on one, this Porsche just might be able to topple Mercedes-AMG's GT 63 S E Performance Coupe from the top of our sprint table too.

Boks kick off international season with clash against Barbarians in Cape Town
CAPE TOWN - The highly anticipated clash between the Springboks and the Barbarians has kicked of at the DHL Stadium in Green Point, Cape Town. The match marks the start of the Springboks' five-month international season. Saturday evening's game against the British-based invitational rugby union club, renowned for bringing together top players from various clubs and countries, serves as the curtain-raiser for the Boks' busy season. The Boks' last victory over the Barbarians date back to December 2000 in Cardiff, where they secured a 41-31 win. EWN spoke to Bok fans, all brimming with excitement to watch the thrilling encounter. "My score prediction for this game will be Springboks 32, Barbarians, 14," said one fan. "I'm sure the excitement is felt across the entire country, I'm just a little concerned with the wet weather that we're experiencing in Cape Town today, Go Springboks," said another. "Glad rugby season is finally back, confident because you know we're playing on home turf, reigning world champions so I know the opposition is intimidated." This Sprinboks-Barbarians clash is the first of two significant rugby fixtures to be hosted in Cape Town. The Boks are also expected to do battle with Australia at DHL stadium on 23 August as part of their defence of the Rugby Championship.

Photo: BackpagePix Image: BackpagePix Comment by Ashfak Mohamed You would've expected a bit more from the Barbarians – especially with the calibre of players selected – but it was the Springboks who put on a show in a wet Cape Town Stadium on Saturday. The 54-7 scoreline was a bit jarring, as the Boks didn't need to get out of third gear – or even second – to dispatch Robbie Deans' bunch of all stars, which included Irish duo Cian Healy and Peter O'Mahony, as well as All Black speedster Mark Tele'a. But for a first game of the year, Bok coach Rassie Erasmus would have been satisfied with what he saw, especially in the conditions. The South Africans weren't tested at scrum-time or in the lineouts, but the return of Lood de Jager was a significant highlight. Plagued by injuries and illness in recent seasons, De Jager seemed to wind back the clock and was full of his usual energy. He stole an early Barbarians lineout, carried the ball with conviction at close quarters, and was even involved in a tussle with prop Paul Alo-Emile to demonstrate that he was really up for it. Another Japan-based stalwart in wing Kurt-Lee Arendse was full of running, putting in a few dazzling surges and getting a well-deserved try, while back-three partners Cheslin Kolbe and Aphelele Fassi weren't far behind. Fassi had a hand in the first two Bok tries with a couple of classy grubbers, although considering that it wasn't more than an exhibition game, perhaps he should've kept those kinds of tricks in the back pocket for more important occasions – such as the All Blacks at Eden Park. Flyhalf Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu also pulled off some moves from the Tony Brown playbook that got the drenched 45,000-strong crowd up on their feet. But the biggest winner of the day was scrumhalf Morné van den Berg, who produced a strong kicking display to make it a nightmare for the Barbarians catchers, while he cleaned up some scrappy ball at the breakdowns with aplomb. Van den Berg backed up Erasmus' pre-match praise, and proved that he is a viable option as a starter and back-up to Grant Williams. It was a pity that debutants such as Asenathi Ntlabakanye and Vincent Tshituka didn't get much ball in hand, even though the Sharks loose forward grabbed two tries. Hard-running No 8 Jean-Luc du Preez was in the same boat, and was the unfortunate victim of 'friendly fire' in a clean-out from De Jager that saw him leave the field just before halftime. Erasmus pulled off a trick of his own by introducing his entire bench early in the second half, and employing Sharks centre André Esterhuizen at flank – where he started his senior career. Esterhuizen made some decent clean-outs, although his running lines weren't always suited to a loose forward, while he shifted out to the midfield a few times as well. But his versatility could be a valuable tool to employ ahead of the 2027 World Cup, particularly if Erasmus opts for a seven-one split where Esterhuizen can cover both the midfield and loose trio. Another important box ticked were the Bok debuts for hooker Marnus van der Merwe and tighthead prop Neethling Fouché, who both got involved with vigour in the tight-loose and scrums. Italy will provide a far more searching test of the world champions' abilities in next Saturday's first Test at Loftus Versfeld, but it was a sound start for Erasmus' team in a big year of international rugby.
