EXCLUSIVE Bezos wedding secrets the cameras didn't capture - from what the guests complained about to a brutal swipe at Lauren's ex... and the couple's unconventional honeymoon plans

Daily Maila day ago
If your wedding was a global media event, hailed by some as the 'wedding of the century', then how on earth do you follow it?
For Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez, now Sanchez-Bezos, the answer is by not going on honeymoon.
The couple are currently cruising around the coast of Croatia with their seven children from previous relationships – and have no plans to do anything more organised than that.
I'm told: 'They are just hanging out on jetskis and swimming and sunbathing. Its not a honeymoon really, they aren't going away just the two of them. They are relaxing and recovering from the wedding with some family time.'
'Familymoons' – where children come away with their parents – are on the rise as a phenomenon, although after celebrating their love story so visibly it's a surprise that the couple haven't had a more romantic get-away.
However a source who was intimately connected with the wedding tells me that family were front and center at the event.
For a start, it can be revealed that Sanchez' two sons Evan, 19, and Nikko, 24, were the ones who walked her down the aisle at the wedding on Friday last week in the grounds of the Cini Foundation in San Giorgio Maggiore, just off the Grand Canal in Venice.
Nikko is her son by former NFL player Tony Gonzales and Tony and his wife Tobie were among the 200 friends and family at the wedding.
Sanchez' daughter Ella, 17, was a maid of honour. Sources say: 'all the kids gave speeches' at the festivities after the wedding ceremony, including Bezos' four children.
He had three sons during his marriage to Mackenzie Bezos and they also adopted a daughter. The oldest, Preston, is 25. He's never made public the names of the rest.
A source said: 'What people won't know from the pictures is how exhausting and full-on it was for the guests.
'The heat didn't help but people were forever needing to get around Venice, which means by boat, and that was a hassle and took ages, and there were a lot of people who all needed to get to the same place at the same time.
'People were complaining about being completely tired by the time of the wedding day, never mind the day after.'
The bar of the Gritti Palace Hotel was the chief hang-out during the three day celebration, with guests like Tom Brady, Orlando Bloom, Sydney Sweeney and Kim and Khloe Kardashian hanging out and partying until the early hours.
Jeff Bezos, 61, and Lauren, 55, and their families were quartered at the nearby Aman, and there was an 'overspill' at the St Regis. Lauren had a full on 'glam squad suite' at the Aman for her stylists, hair stylists and make up artists.
British singer Ellie Goulding, who was pictured at the event, was actually there to perform after the wedding. The couple also had a gospel choir and it is reported that Matteo Bocelli sang, too.
R&B star Usher sang at the 'night after' party on Saturday. Reports that Sir Elton John and Lady Gaga were to perform turned out to be incorrect.
The night after party, also called their 'Dolce Notte', was meant to be a pyjama party but many guests interpreted the dress code very liberally.
Not least Sanchez-Bezos, who wore a pink Atelier Versace dress with a hand embroidered bodice embellished with crystals and hand pleated skirt.
Other guests – so far unreported – include the Netflix boss Ted Sarandos, which might be a surprise as Amazon's Prime Video is a direct rival subscription service to Netflix.
Socialite Wendi Deng, formerly married to Rupert Murdoch, was also there.
Hollywood power broker Ari Emanuel was there with wife Sarah Staudinger, a fashion designer and friend of the bride.

There was some surprise at the invite for Ari, which is being interpreted as a 'slap in the face' for Sanchez' first husband, Patrick Whitesell.
Whitesell, who is the father of Evan and Ella, famously has never got on with Emanuel, even though the two men ran WME together for years.
Whitesell has since remarried, to model Pia. He and Lauren Sanchez were married for 14 years and announced their separation when her affair with Jeff Bezos became public.
The two couples knew each other socially and professionally before the Jeff and Lauren liaison.
Jeff Bezos, who founded Amazon, is one of the wealthiest people in the world with a net worth of $244 billion. New wife Lauren is a journalist turned helicopter pilot and she met him when making a documentary.
During the wedding she wore a Schiaparelli haute couture dress to an 'eve of' celebration, then a high necked lace Dolce & Gabbana dress for the ceremony.
There has been criticism of Jeff Bezos' D&G tux with a Twitter account for Caraceni Sartoria, a leading bespoke tailoring house, writing: 'The most terrible, frightening, horrible tuxedo ever seen in my life. Elegance is not an empty word. I cant stand it! Really suffering.'
Guests included Oprah and Gayle King, model Karlie Kloss, former Vogue UK editor Edward Enninful, stylist Jamie Mizrahi, actor Orlando bloom and Kim and Khloe Kardahian, their mother Kris Jenner, and Kylie and Kendall Jenner.

Aimee Lou Wood puts on a cosy display with boyfriend Adam Long as they party together at Glastonbury after romance was revealed

Their romance was first revealed when they were pictured kissing last month. And Aimee Lou Wood 's new romance with boyfriend Adam Long is going from strength to strength, as they partied together at Glastonbury over the weekend. The White Lotus star, 31, joined the crowds to watch live music at Worthy Farm, opting for a casual olive green cap. Adam, 34 - who is best known for his role as convict Lewis Whippey in Happy Valley - was dressed in a blue gingham shirt. The pair - who are starring together in the upcoming BBC series Film Club - were first spotted sharing a kiss last month. Aimee has liked all of Adam's social media posts since their Film Club casting was announced last November. She was also quick to praise the star after he completed a sponsored run in aid of Movember and men's mental health awareness. On a snap of the actor and his running buddies, Aimee penned: 'YOU DID IT!!!!!!! ✨' It's believed the pair met last year working on their upcoming BBC Three series, written by Aimee, in which they play a couple. The pair play lovers in the series, which follows Evie (Aimee) who sets up a film club with her best friend Noa (Nabhaan Rizwaan). A BBC synopsis reads: 'It's Friday night. 7pm. Film Club Week 198. Evie hasn't left the house in six months after a 'wobble', and tonight, things are different. 'Noa's got big news. A dream job is taking him across the other side of the country, which means that all of this is ending. That reality is hitting. That they're going to be forced to consider for the first time they might be more than just friends. 'Neither of them are the best when it comes to emotions but this time those emotions might be impossible to ignore... 'As if life weren't challenging enough already, Evie is going to be navigating this amongst the eccentricity of her family home - living with her fiercely loving single mum Suz (Suranne Jones), sister Izzie (Liv Hill), and handsome boyfriend/sometime man of the house Josh (Adam). 'Film Club is a witty and emotional show about love and family, about whether we should follow our hearts or heads, and being in love with a friend.' Speaking about the series, Aimee - who created the show with Ralph Davies - said in a statement: 'I'm thrilled that our beloved TV series Film Club, a project that Ralph and I have been writing for the past decade, starts shooting this week. 'We couldn't be more excited, and grateful, to the incredible team we have assembled with the BBC. 'To bring this to life with Nabhaan and Suranne, two exceptional actors I have always admired, is a real honour.' The series was filmed in Manchester last year and is set for release on BBC iPlayer and BBC Three later this year. Adam, who also starred in Day Of The Jackal and Waterloo Road, has not spoken publicly about his love life. Aimee's last known relationship was with her Sex Education co-star Connor Swindells, who she split from in 2020 after two years together. Connor, 28, who stars in SAS Rogue Heroes, is now married to the Peaky Blinders star, Amber Anderson, 32, who he wed last year. Discussing the reason behind their split, Aimee noted that relationships don't have to consist of a 'goodie' and a 'baddie', but sometimes the combination of two personalities in a dynamic can result in 'unhealthy themes'. She said in an interview with Grazia: 'We'd had some time apart and then we realised that maybe the relationship wasn't serving us both,' before stating that she and Connor still love each other and respect each other. According to Aimee the breakup was amicable and wasn't dramatic. She compared the moment she became single to a dam bursting wide open. She added: 'When I'm in a relationship I find it hard to maintain my sense of self. I'm very independent but also quite impressionable.' MailOnline has contacted Amy and Adam's representatives for comment. In recent months, the star has catapulted to global fame, owing to her role in HBO hit, The White Lotus. However, the actress' personal life caused more headlines than the series itself, with Aimee hitting out at Saturday Night Live for their 'mean and unfunny' parody of the show that mocked her teeth; as well as being embroiled in claims of a 'feud' with her on-screen lover. The SNL sketch featured comedian Sarah Sherman, 32, parodying Aimee's character Chelsea while using fake teeth to mock her, which prompted in widespread outrage. The sketch poked fun at her Manchester U.K. accent and her teeth, with Sarah exclaiming: 'Fluoride? What's that?' In response, Aimee took aim at the 'cheap' joke, writing on Instagram: 'Such a shame cuz I had such a great time watching it a couple weeks ago. Yes, take the p**s for sure - that's what the show is about- but there must be a cleverer, more nuanced, less cheap way?' She also shared messages of support from her followers and sister Emily, admitting she'd received 'thousands' of messages backing her up. Aimee continued: 'Last thing I'll say on the matter. I am not thin skinned. I actually love being taken the p**s out of when it's clever and in good spirits. But the joke was about fluoride. I have big gap teeth not bad teeth. 'I don't mind caricature - I understand that's what SNL is. But the rest of the skit was punching up and I/ Chelsea was the only one punched down On... Okay end of.' To conclude, she shared a comment from a fan that read: 'It was a sharp and funny skit until it suddenly took a screeching turn into 1970's misogyny', she added: 'This sums up my view'. Aimee's rumoured feud with her White Lotus co-star Walton Goggins has also had fans talking in recent months. The rumours hit an all-time high after they unfollowed each other on Instagram. But last week the onscreen lovers put the rumours to bed, tackling the reports head on in a joint interview with Variety. 'There is no feud. I adore, I love this woman madly, and she is so important to me,' Walton insisted. Aimee proceeded to address the outrage over headlines that Goggins unfollowed her on social media, which fans perceived as a sign they did not get along. 'I think it's such a comment on where we're at culturally,' she said over the online fury. 'Why is everyone obsessing over Instagram? That is irrelevant. We don't give a s**t about Instagram.' She explained she wished more people were having 'conversations about the story' of their White Lotus characters, Rick and Chelsea, and simply enjoying the show. As well as her new role in Film Club, Aimee has been kept busy filming series two of her BBC sitcom Daddy Issues. This year will also see her star in crime-thriller film Sweet Dreams, which has been pitched as 'a British Fargo'. Adam's most recent TV role was in the ITV drama Protection, which saw him reunite with Happy Valley co-star Siobhan Finneran. His most famous role to date was in the BAFTA-winning Happy Valley, in which he played a convict who aided James Norton's Tommy Lee Royce in kidnapping the daughter of a wealthy businessman, for ransom.

The Bezos wedding was a study in disingenuous billionaire behavior

If last week was the best of times for Zohran Mamdani and the working people of New York City, it was the worst of times for the billionaires who spent a small fortune trying to stop him from securing the city's Democratic mayoral nomination. The media mogul Barry Diller, to name just one, donated a cool $250,000 to Andrew Cuomo's campaign, only to see the disgraced former governor lose by a decisive margin. But Diller would soon be able to drown his disappointment in Great Gatsby-themed cocktails as he joined Tom Brady, Ivanka Trump and at least three Kardashians for the cheeriest event on this season's oligarchic social calendar: the Venetian wedding of the former TV journalist Lauren Sánchez and the Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. It was a juxtaposition that even CNN questioned, as the network cut from an interview with Mamdani to coverage of the gilded spectacle. The reportedly $50m affair booked all nine of Venice's yacht ports, closed parts of the city to the public and forced the relocation of hotel guests to make room for the happy couple. It all served as a stark if sumptuous reminder that there is no expense the megarich won't pay to secure their own comfort – except, of course, the toll their extravagance takes on the communities from whom they extract their wealth. The lovebirds' choice of Venice alone demonstrates their carelessness. Because the city comprises more than 100 islands in the Adriatic Sea, it's uniquely vulnerable to rising sea levels driven by warming global temperatures. Though Sánchez claims to be 'dedicated to fighting climate change', and Bezos has called the issue 'the biggest threat to our planet', their guests arrived in the City of Bridges via 96 private jets, the most carbon-intensive mode of transportation. Bezos has made splashy commitments to fighting climate change, like pledging $10bn to his Bezos Earth Fund, while Amazon has promised to become carbon neutral by 2040. But emissions from Amazon's delivery fleet soared from 2019 to 2023, and its newest data center will guzzle millions of gallons of water and the energy equivalent of one million homes every year. This disingenuousness is as much a business strategy for Bezos as Prime's two-day delivery, enabling him to launder his reputation without hurting his bottom line. The pattern played out last year with his ownership of the Washington Post – where, as soon as he felt threatened by an ascendant Donald Trump, journalistic integrity fell overboard more quickly than an inebriated wedding guest on a luxury gondola. As I covered in a column earlier this year, Bezos killed the Post's endorsement of Kamala Harris, directed the editorial board to publish op-eds that only support 'personal liberties and free markets' and oversaw the exodus of more than 20 reporters and editors. Pamela Weymouth, granddaughter of trailblazing Post publisher Katharine Graham, described this capitulation in a recent piece for the Nation as endangering 'the very thing that makes America a democracy'. In fairness to Bezos, though, charity-washing is an occupational hazard for billionaires. Mark Zuckerberg initially donated to organizations fighting the California housing crisis that he helped exacerbate, before quietly ending his funding this year. The Gates Foundation gives 90% of its funding to non-profits in wealthy countries rather than the impoverished ones whose GDPs are smaller than its namesake's net worth. The magnanimity of the uber-wealthy tends to produce what the journalist Anand Giridharadas has called 'fake change', or efforts that stop short of systemic change because those systems underpin the benefactors' vast wealth. That's why any vision of progressive change cannot rely on Bezos or his celebrity wedding guests to operate against their self-interest. (No, not even Oprah.) A Green New Deal will not come from oligarchical guilt, but from mass movements. Like the one that deployed almost 30,000 door knockers and pooled funds from 27,000 donors to share Mamdani's message of genuine economic empowerment. Mamdani's victory on Tuesday added to a growing body of proof that even billionaires don't always get what they want. Last year, Elon Musk spent more than a quarter of a billion dollars electing Republicans, but no amount of money could save him from Donald Trump's mercurial temper. Nor did his wealth sway the voters of Wisconsin, where he contributed $21m to a state supreme court candidate who ended up losing by 10 points. Voters' growing skepticism of the 1% is no doubt being stoked by grassroots activism. Like in Venice, where local protesters threatened to fill canals with inflatable crocodiles, forcing the wedding of the century to relocate to the city's outskirts. Back stateside, progressives Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez continue to draw record crowds across the country on their Fighting Oligarchy tour. At a recent stop in Oklahoma – a state Trump won by 33 points – Sanders spoke to a standing-room only crowd. Might a billionaire backlash be building, just in time for next year's midterms?
