New South Wales is on alert for a severe weather system this weekend with 80mm of rain for Sydney
A cold and wet weekend is on the cards for the eastern states as a tropical zone of moisture collides with a low-pressure system off the New South Wales Mid North Coast. The Bureau of Meteorology has already issued a flood warning for the region as well as the Hunter Valley, with the worst of the system expected to hit on Saturday evening. The Harbour City is expected to cop a drenching up to 40mm on Saturday as the system hits. Temperatures will be around 17 degrees, but it will feel lower than that around coastal areas due to wind chill. The Bureau of Meteorology is also monitoring a separate wet front for Perth, with a marine wind warning issued for the coasts of Perth, Bunbury and Albany. Across the capitals, Darwin will have a warm and sunny day with tops of 31 and lows of 20, meaning those visiting the Garma Festival on Arnham land will have a settled day. But it's down the east coast where the rain is, with temperatures in Brisbane of up to 19 degrees with sunny spells. Canberra will wake up to sunny spells and highs of 13 from a low of 4 as well as expected drizzle over the course of the day. Melbourne will have a mild day with highs of 15 and lows of 6 with overcast skies, with Hobart dropping down to 14 degrees and lows of 3 and sunny spells. Adelaide will wake to sunny spells and highs of 14 with lows of 6. Sky News Weather Presenter Nikolina Kharoufeh said of New South Wales' wet weather that "The coastal low has triggered a Severe Weather Warning for the mid north coast and hunter into Saturday afternoon." 'Damaging winds are a threat alongside heavy rain that may lead to flash and river flooding. "Particular locations which may be affected include Port Macquarie, Taree, Scone, Comboyne, Nowendoc and Gloucester. "There is also a Hazardous Surf Warning for the Macquarie Coast." She also said the rain gauges in the Harbour City could be higher than initially forecast earlier in the week. "Sydney could see up to 80mm across Saturday and a further 25mm into Sunday, so it's certainly going to be a weekend washout. 'It's important residents stay safe on the roads as flash flooding is a risk and visibility will be reduced due to the heavy falls. 'Always remember that 'if it is flooded forget it'."
