Europeans angry with Elon Musk still aren't buying his cars as Tesla sales drop for fifth month in a row

NEW YORK: Europeans still aren't buying Teslas with figures out June 25 showing sales plunged for a fifth month in a row in May, a blow to investors who had hoped anger toward Elon Musk would have faded by now.
Tesla sales fell 28% last month in 30 European countries even as the overall market for electric vehicles expanded sharply, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association. The poor showing comes after Tesla's billionaire CEO had promised a "major rebound' was coming last month, adding to a recent buying frenzy among investors.
They were selling on Wednesday, pushing the prices down more than 4% in early afternoon trading.
Musk had said Tesla was sure to get a boost once the company was done retooling its factories to produce a new version of its biggest seller, the Model Y. But that was finished months ago, and the new models are widely available. Investors are now hoping that a cheaper Tesla expected to be out later year will help reverse the sales decline.
Overall, battery electric vehicle sales rose 25% in Europe compared to a year earlier. The market for EVs was particularly strong in Germany, where Musk has angered potential buyers by publicly supporting the far-right, anti-immigrant Alternative for Germany party in elections. Overall EV sales there leapt 45%.
China's SAIC Motor was the big winner for the month with its European sales of EVs and other kinds of cars jumping 38%. That has allowed the company to leapfrog Tesla, which a year ago was selling more cars in the region.
SAIC sold 18,716 vehicles last month versus Tesla's 8,729.
The sales drop for Tesla comes at a crucial time for the company as it launches a test run of its driverless 'robotaxis' service in Austin, Texas. Musk says that if goes well, he expects to introduce the service in several other cities in quick succession and have as many as a million of the automated cabs on roads by the end of the year.
Reviews so far have been mostly good, but the service is limited to a dozen or so cars and some passengers have circulated videos of problems during their rides, including one showing a robotaxi heading down a lane for opposing traffic.
Federal traffic safety regulators said Tuesday they were looking into the videos.

H&M said its net profit fell to 3.96 billion kronor ($419 million) for the period of March to May of 2025, down from 5.06 billion a year earlier. "The quarter's result was negatively affected by higher purchasing prices as a result of a more expensive US dollar and higher freight costs, but also by the fact that we have continued to invest in the customer offering," H&M chief executive Daniel Erver said in a statement. Erver noted that "negative external factors that increased the costs of purchasing for the first half of the year are turning positive for the second half of the year". Net sales for the company fell nearly five percent to 56.7 billion kronor, compared to the second quarter of 2024. But the company noted that net sales rose by one percent in local currencies "with four percent fewer stores at the end of the quarter compared with the same point in time the previous year." In its quarterly earnings report it said net sales were hit by "a currency translation effect of around six percentage points due to the strengthened Swedish krona." LABUAN, June 28 (Bernama) -- Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa has called for coordinated and innovative strategies to reduce Labuan's heavy reliance on imported food. She urged the implementation of urban and alternative farming systems to address the island's limited agricultural land. Dr Zaliha acknowledged that the duty-free island faces significant agricultural challenges due to land constraints and limited connectivity. However, she emphasised that sustainable food policies must be developed to ensure sufficient raw material supplies for the local population. 'Our efforts are to ensure adequate food supplies for the Labuan community despite the shortage of land and (limited) connectivity,' she told reporters after launching the Interim Report on the 2024 Agriculture Census in the Federal Territories 2024 here today. Dr Zaliha noted that with only 0.22 per cent of land in Labuan zoned for agricultural use, the constraint makes large-scale conventional farming unfeasible, necessitating alternatives such as hydroponics and urban farming. She said Labuan's overdependence on imported food could result in price instability and a rising cost of living. In response, she announced that Labuan Corporation (LC), in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture, Department of Veterinary Services, and the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living, would evaluate the island's food self-sufficiency levels, particularly for essential items such as chicken, meat, eggs, and vegetables. She also proposed a long-term vision to transform Labuan into a 'living laboratory' for sustainable food systems in Malaysia, inspired from urban food district models in European cities.
