Rays slugger Junior Caminero to compete in Home Run Derby, start at third base in All-Star Game
In between, Caminero merely belted his 22nd homer of the season in the seventh inning of a 7-3 win in Detroit.
Caminero, who turned 22 on July 5, leads all AL third basemen in homers in what has been a breakout season. He is hitting .254 and driven in 58 runs for the Rays, who moved within four games of Toronto in the AL East on Wednesday night.
'I'm going to put on a show. I'm going to try to put on a show just to give the fans the opportunity to get to know me, see my power,' Caminero said. 'Just being there with all those other All-Stars, it's going to be something very special.'
Caminero is the sixth player to commit to the Home Run Derby, joining the Mariners' Cal Raleigh, James Wood of the Nationals, Byron Buxton of the Twins, the Pirates' Oneil Cruz and Ronald Acuna Jr. of the hosting Braves. Two more contestants are still to be announced, and Buxton's status is unclear after he was hit in the left hand in Wednesday night's win over the Cubs.
Caminero was picked earlier this week as the All-Star replacement for Boston's Alex Bregman, who has been dealing with a strained right quadriceps. He learned he would start at third base after Wednesday night's game after Cleveland's José Ramírez opted out of the Midsummer Classic so that he could rest an ailing Achilles tendon.

Astros third baseman Isaac Paredes was chosen to replace Ramírez on the AL roster.
The only Rays players besides Caminero to participate in the Home Run Derby have been Evan Longoria, Carlos Pena and Randy Arozarena, who reached the finals two years ago before losing to Blue Jays slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
'We get to see (Caminero) do probably a modified Home Run Derby every time he takes batting practice. I'm excited for him. I'm excited for his family,' Rays manager Kevin Cash said. 'Somewhat of a coming-out party for him. Hopefully, he gets the recognition that we've all seen in the talent and the ability to hit the ball a long way.'

Padres' All-Star-laden bullpen is lights out in a 4-2 win over NL East-leading Phillies
SAN DIEGO (AP) — All-Star reliever Jason Adam got out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth inning and San Diego's bullpen threw 4 1/3 scoreless innings as the Padres beat the NL East-leading Philadelphia Phillies 4-2 on Friday night. Adrian Morejon, added to the National League All-Star team earlier in the day, threw a perfect seventh and fellow All-Star Robert Suarez a perfect ninth for his big league-leading 28th save. The Padres are the first team to have three relievers selected to the All-Star Game in the same season, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. With the Padres leading 3-2, Adam loaded the bases on a leadoff walk to Trea Turner and consecutive one-out singles by Bryce Harper and Alec Bohm. Nick Castellanos hit a dribbler a few feet in front of the plate that Adam flipped with his glove to catcher Elias Díaz to force Turner. Adam then got Max Kepler to pop up to shortstop and celebrated by slapping his glove and clenching his right fist. Jeremiah Estrada (3-4) threw a perfect sixth for the win. Kyle Schwarber hit his 30th homer and Castellanos also homered for the Phillies, who took two of three against the Padres last week in Philadelphia. Both came off rookie Ryan Bergert, who returned from the injured list 17 days after taking a 103-mph line drive off his right forearm against Washington. Twins shortstop Carlos Correa sprains ankle when baserunner slides into him at 2nd
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota Twins shortstop Carlos Correa had to be helped off the field after injuring his right ankle when Pittsburgh's Tommy Pham slid into him at second base. Pham was trying to get to second on his liner off the wall in right field in the seventh inning of the Twins' 2-1 victory Friday night. Right fielder DaShawn Keirsey Jr.'s throw beat Pham, whose batting helmet made contact with Correa's lower leg. Correa rolled over and stayed on the ground before leaving the game. Brooks Lee moved from second base to shortstop to replace Correa. The team said Correa had a mild ankle sprain. The 30-year-old Correa is already in his 11th big league season and has been a mainstay at shortstop for the Twins since signing as a free agent in 2022. He missed about half of last season with a concussion and a plantar fascia injury, the latter of which kept him from playing in the All-Star Game after he was chosen for the third time.
