China says welcomes Russian decision to recognise Taliban govt
BEIJING: China said Friday it welcomed Russia's decision to become the first country to recognise the Taliban's rule in Afghanistan, vowing to 'pursue a foreign policy of friendship towards the Afghan people'. 'As a traditional friendly neighbour of Afghanistan, the Chinese side has always believed that Afghanistan should not be excluded from the international community,' foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said. The Taliban swept back to power in 2021 after ousting the foreign-backed government and have imposed an austere version of Islamic law. They have keenly sought official international recognition and investment, as the country recovers from four decades of war, including the Soviet invasion from 1979 to 1989. Russia becomes first country to recognise Taliban government of Afghanistan China does not officially recognise the government but hosts a Taliban ambassador in Beijing. It has said the Taliban government will need to introduce political reforms, improve security and mend relations with its neighbouring countries before receiving full diplomatic recognition. But on Friday, Mao said: 'No matter how the internal or external situation changes in Afghanistan, diplomatic relations between China and Afghanistan have never been interrupted.' 'The diplomatic institutions of the two sides in each other's countries have maintained their normal functioning and have played a positive role in promoting the development of relations between the two countries,' she added.

Trump says he expects Hamas decision in 24 hours on ‘final' peace proposal
WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump said on Friday it would probably be known in 24 hours whether the Palestinian group Hamas has agreed to accept what he has called a 'final proposal' for an Israel-Hamas ceasefire in Gaza. The president also said he had spoken to Saudi Arabia about expanding the Abraham Accords, the deal on normalization of ties that his administration negotiated between Israel and some Gulf countries during his first term. Trump said on Tuesday Israel had accepted the conditions needed to finalise a 60-day ceasefire with Hamas, during which the parties will work to end the war. He was asked on Friday if Hamas had agreed to the latest ceasefire deal framework, and said: 'We'll see what happens, we are going to know over the next 24 hours.' A source close to Hamas said on Thursday the Islamist group sought guarantees that the new U.S.-backed ceasefire proposal would lead to the end of Israel's war in Gaza. Two Israeli officials said those details were still being worked out. Dozens of Palestinians were killed on Thursday in Israeli strikes, according to Gaza authorities. The latest bloodshed in the decades-old Israeli-Palestinian conflict was triggered in October 2023 when Hamas attacked Israel, killing 1,200 and taking about 250 hostages, Israeli tallies show. Gaza's health ministry says Israel's subsequent military assault has killed over 56,000 Palestinians. It has also caused a hunger crisis, internally displaced Gaza's entire population and prompted accusations of genocide at the International Court of Justice and of war crimes at the International Criminal Court. Israel denies the accusations. Hamas says discussing Gaza ceasefire proposals from mediators A previous two month ceasefire ended when Israeli strikes killed more than 400 Palestinians on March 18. Trump earlier this year proposed a U.S. takeover of Gaza, which was condemned globally by rights experts, the U.N. and Palestinians as a proposal of 'ethnic cleansing.' Abraham accords Trump made the comments on the Abraham Accords when asked about U.S. media reporting late on Thursday that he had met Saudi Defense Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman at the White House. 'It's one of the things we talked about,' Trump said. 'I think a lot of people are going to be joining the Abraham accords,' he added, citing the predicted expansion to the damage faced by Iran from recent U.S. and Israeli strikes. Axios reported that after the meeting with Trump, the Saudi official spoke on the phone with Abdolrahim Mousavi, chief of Iran's General Staff of the Armed Forces. Trump's meeting with the Saudi official came ahead of a visit to Washington next week by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Israeli regime—the cowards
The Israeli regime led by Benjamin Netanyahu can be easily described as coward for eagerly agreeing to a ceasefire with Iran on one hand, and stepping up its belligerence against the besieged, traumatized, unarmed and homeless population of Gaza, on the other. The Zionist regime's cowardice can be explained, for example, by its yesterday's action of killing 25 Gazans, including 12 in an air strike on a school sheltering Palestinians displaced by the ongoing Israeli onslaught. Piqued by its defeat at the hands of valiant Iranians, Tel Aviv is now adding to its war crimes with a view to overcoming the humiliation that it suffered on account of missile attacks from Iran on its major installations recently. Needless to say, Israel's war machinery has killed more than 55,000 Palestinians since October 7 2023. Ninety percent of Gaza's schools and universities have been damaged or destroyed by Israeli attacks, including airstrikes, shelling, burning and controlled demolitions. No doubt, Israeli war crimes are clear and blatant violations of international criminal law, including crimes against humanity and the crime of genocide. How ironic, however, it is the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the Arab League (AL) have reduced themselves into mere debating clubs as neither has done anything to help end the plight of battered and brutalized Palestinians so far.
